i love stories about gerald ford…he was hosting some russian ambassador or some other similar position, a guy known for his heavy drinking. anyways, ford stays up all night with the dude getting shitfaced hammered…then at the asscrack of dawn, knocks on the guy’s door and has him go for a run.

always loved that.

jackson was indeed awesome, not denying that…but there’s no way in hell we’ll see a president behave like he did again. he’s almost a one-off.

There is no way that a president even a few decades later would have done what Jackson did. A lot of the presidents that followed him were specifically supported by power members of Congress because they pledged not to be as grasping or confrontational as Jackson was. This began the period from the 1830s to the 1900s where, except for Lincoln and to a lesser extent Andrew Johnson, presidents were less powerful than Congress and acted more like the Administrator in Chief than as the center of government that we see the President as today.

I’m a fan of FDR too. Every day at 4pm was the start of cocktail hour at the White House. During cocktails FDR allowed any subject to be discussed except politics.

During World War II, when King George VI was visiting the U.S. he stayed at FDR’s summer residence at Hyde Park in New York. Roosevelt kept him up until 2am talking about international politics and then when he was finished making his point, he reached over and tapped King George on the leg and said “Time for bed young man”.

he easily could have won a third term if there weren’t limits in place, even with the birth of destructive partisanship in the legislative branch with his impeachment.
