Protester Opposes New Baseball Field For Disabled Children, Assaults Program Director
The Miracle League is a national organization that provides a baseball outlet for disabled children. As part of the program, the Miracle League builds specially designed fields that accommodate wheelchairs and other special needs.
The Miracle League of the Triangle, the local chapter in the Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina area, is planning on building a new field on property in North Raleigh. Residents of a nearby neighborhood, though, are opposed to the building of that field. They were so opposed over Memorial weekend that they showed up at the elementary school field in Cary, North Carolina where the Miracle League is currently playing to protest and hand out fliers.
According to WRAL.com in Raleigh, that protest turned violent after police ordered protesters off the property and on to the sidewalk. One of the protesters, identified as Gene George, hit Traci Brown, executive director of the Miracle League, in the back and knocked her to the ground. He was arrested a few days ago.
The protesters’ fliers claim to be concerned about power lines near the proposed construction and the safety of the children. Of course, they live right next to the same area. Another protester said that she hoped the incident didn’t take away from the concerns neighbors have about the traffic and noise from the ball fields. Very touching by these protesters, and a great way to teach your kids about tolerance.
