Joey Votto Has Only Hit One Pulled Foul Ball Into the Stands In His Career
Tom Verducci of Sports Illustrated has an article on Cincinnati Reds slugger Joey Votto, where he makes the case for Votto as the best hitter in the game right now. Votto just signed a big 10 year, 225 million dollar deal before the season. Compared to the Pujols contract or the upcoming Josh Hamilton deal, though, Votto is younger and more likely to still be productive through most of a 10-year deal.
Votto is currently leading the NL in both on-base percentage and slugging percentage, as well as walks. While he *only* has 9 home runs, he has 22 doubles. Josh Hamilton has gotten a lot of publicity for his hot start, but Votto has been just as productive (more doubles and walks, fewer home runs) than the Rangers’ center fielder, and is the NL MVP through the first two months. Considering that he already led the NL in both on-base and slugging two years ago, and in on-base percentage last year, it’s somewhat amazing that he has never played started in an All-Star game. That should get rectified this year.
The most amazing thing from Verducci’s article, though, was this–Joey Votto has only pulled one foul ball into the seats in his major league career. If you like to sit along the first base line, Votto’s probably not going to give you a souvenir. Votto remembers that lone pulled foul ball into the crowd from his rookie year, a foul ball he describes as not being deep, 20 to 30 feet foul. “I haven’t hit a long home run foul in my whole career,” Votto added.
Amazing. I mean, I don’t know if that is an official statistic kept by anyone, but lots of good hitters get fooled on breaking pitches and pull them foul. That Votto has pulled one foul enough to reach the seats only once in his career is a testament to his–to this point, under appreciated–skill.

I don’t even know what to say. That really is hard to believe. Wow.
June 6th, 2012 at 3:48 PM
Almost as impressive as Mark Reynolds having never made contact on a breaking ball.
June 6th, 2012 at 3:48 PM
I just realized I used the word amazing a few times in that post.
Amazing.
June 6th, 2012 at 3:50 PM
This right here. Further more, is this a good thing or a bad thing?
June 6th, 2012 at 3:50 PM
In the part about him missing an All-Star game you could easily have replaced it with “effing retarded”.
June 6th, 2012 at 3:51 PM
Ctrl+F = Three times. Tough crowd.

i had the same reaction when Adam Dunn didn’t have a sacrifice fly for almost his entire career, until getting his first one a couple years ago.

i had the same reaction when Adam Dunn didn’t have a sacrifice fly for almost his entire career, until getting his first one a couple years ago.
It was at that moment he decided to strike out for the next 3 years straight to avoid another.

I remember when Dunn was on the Reds and Dusty Baker once had him square up for a sacrifice bunt. Probably one of the most retarded things I’ve ever seen a manager have a player do.
June 6th, 2012 at 3:54 PM
Fascinating.
June 6th, 2012 at 3:54 PM
that’s insane.
June 6th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
Best Hitter in Baseball. His line drive rate is off the charts good. Rarely does he not square up a ball and hit it hard. Eye for the strikezone is crazy good too.

This reminds me, and I feel compelled to share… last night after Gordon Beckham sac bunted in the first inning with no outs and a guy on second the Sox radio guy said: “Now some people might wonder why Gordon would sacrifice there with Romero on the hill and no outs and the lefty Dunn on deck. To that you just have to say you play the game right way and let the chips fall.”

Haven’t seen Votto that much. But Miggy is the best hitter in baseball IMO.

St.Bear – I saw your tweet and message in the last post. You’ll feel even worse tomorrow and probably the day after when the soreness sets in. It will not be fun. That’s great you did it, though.
June 6th, 2012 at 4:00 PM
Not to chide Miggy too much because he’s an awesome hitter but Votto’s K:BB ratio is 46:42 while Miggy’s is 35:18 so far this season.
June 6th, 2012 at 4:00 PM
Nope. Miggy gets that title.

June 6th, 2012 at 4:00 PM
I don’t know what this means. Is it better to be late on a pitch? He still strikes out over 100 times a year. It’s not like he’s Joe DiMaggio.
June 6th, 2012 at 4:00 PM
Not to chide Miggy too much because he’s an awesome hitter but Votto’s K:BB ratio is 46:42 while Miggy’s is 35:18 so far this season.
I just love to see SC using stats to back up his arguments. It’s like he’s all growns up and he’s all growns up.
June 6th, 2012 at 4:01 PM
Whoops. Swap those numbers on Votto. He’s got 46 BBs and 42 Ks. Miggy has 18 BBs and 35 Ks.
June 6th, 2012 at 4:02 PM
Yeah, that doesn’t really help your argument.
June 6th, 2012 at 4:02 PM
Trying to conquer ISO right now. Mostly because Ryan Zimmerman’s is apparently terrible and it’ll help explain to me why he can’t hit for power this year.
June 6th, 2012 at 4:03 PM
The John Travolta of the NL Central everybody.
June 6th, 2012 at 4:03 PM
I’m already feeling the soreness in my forearms and a bit in my legs. Doesn’t help that I’ve been sitting at a desk all day.
June 6th, 2012 at 4:03 PM
This is a worthwhile stat, but using it after 1/3 of one season of an entire career doesn’t make Votto a better hitter than Cabrera.
June 6th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
Joey Votto is leading the league with a .458 wOBA. Hamilton is second with .456. Miggy is down there a bit at .406.
SC is actually kind of right about something. First time for everything.
June 6th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
wOBA is, in my opinion, the best stat for measuring offense.
June 6th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
Wait til you sleep in a bed all night… Ha ha.
June 6th, 2012 at 4:05 PM
I’m skeptical that it’s even true.
June 6th, 2012 at 4:05 PM
Then I guess it’s not worth having? He’s got more walks than strikeouts while Cabrera has struck out nearly twice as many times as he’s walked. Votto is hitting .350 and Cabrera is hitting .321 if you want to use simple stats.
Perhaps you want me to readjust the way I said it and just say that Joey Votto is better at not making outs than Cabrera?

This was my initial thought too. They’re just going to take his word for it?
June 6th, 2012 at 4:07 PM
I was responding to your original response, which had the numbers backward.

June 6th, 2012 at 4:08 PM
According to baseball reference, he’s been in 2.
June 6th, 2012 at 4:08 PM
Votto has the highest line drive rate in baseball (35.9%). He makes some of the most solid contact in the league. The lack of infield pop-ups and foul outs validate that.
Cabrera has a bit more esteemed resume over a career, I guess. He hits for power to all fields better than Joey, too. But right now, as of today in this season, there’s not a better pure hitter in baseball than Joey Votto.
June 6th, 2012 at 4:08 PM
Thrice weekly for me. And guess what tonight is?
June 6th, 2012 at 4:08 PM
And furthermore, it can’t mean anything other than maybe he’s an early count swinger and concludes at-bats quickly.
June 6th, 2012 at 4:09 PM
He’s just never started one because of Albert. Should change this season.
June 6th, 2012 at 4:09 PM
And I still don’t know what the hell it means.

June 6th, 2012 at 4:14 PM
I’m going to see Miggy next week at Wrigley. I’m sure he’ll put one onto Waveland at some point in the 3 game set. Likely off of Travis Wood or Paul Maholm.
June 6th, 2012 at 4:14 PM
Ian Stewart sees 4 pitches per AB, but he swings and misses at 3 of them. He’s terrible at baseball.

Jason Heyward’s on that list thereby eliminating that as a “good hitter’s” stat.
June 6th, 2012 at 4:16 PM
Too bad Votto is a joto doesn’t work
June 6th, 2012 at 4:16 PM
Nah. SC’s baseball fandom borders geekdom; nothing wrong with that. I took umbrage with Votto being a better hitter than Cabrera, but SC clarified, so it makes sense. Votto is money right now. And god damn do I hate baseball stat arguments.
June 6th, 2012 at 4:17 PM
Stewart sees 4 pitches per AB, but he swings and misses at 3 of them. He’s terrible at baseball.

June 6th, 2012 at 4:17 PM
His BABIP suggests he’s been pretty unlucky this year. He’s no All-Star but he’s been hitting the ball hard. Just right at guys. Third base is the position the Cubs will have to put some major effort into filling during the rebuild. The cupboard is completely bare. Josh Vitters has been in triple A for what feels like a decade.
June 6th, 2012 at 4:17 PM
Agreed.
June 6th, 2012 at 4:18 PM
It’s suggested to do so by Men’s Health and it’s helped me lose some inches in the waist. I do see what you’re saying and I have grown sort of bored with it (only done it four times in the past 15ish days). That’s how I found the Murph; I was looking for new stuff.

June 6th, 2012 at 4:20 PM
I do too. Just trying to back up my thoughts with some numbers. I like baseball stat discussions. No one is arguing here.
Batting stats are much harder to wrap my head around. I like raw numbers and data like what you get from Pitch F/X because it’s easier to derive value from radar gun readings, break measurements and % of strikes thrown. I’m still very much a novice when it comes to batting stats. Votto is a fantasy player of mine so I watch a lot of Reds games. He rakes, based on my “eye test.”
June 6th, 2012 at 4:20 PM

Trout is probably my favorite position player to watch right now though. And I never miss a Cliff Lee start when it comes to pitching. The ground that guy walks on is sacred. Too bad the ground his offense walks on is rotten.

The Tough Mudder had a very similar workout that was really good. I’ve been doing that, and now I’m going to mix in this Murph workout once a week. Then after a month or two, I’ll change it up to a more traditional circuit training with weights.
June 6th, 2012 at 4:27 PM
JV is a fantastic pitcher. I just enjoy watching guys with exceptional command like Lee more than power pitchers. I’ll watch Aroldis Chapman close a game out if I want to see someone crank it up for an inning.

The Yankees see the most pitches per plate appearance as a team. It just means they have a team full of guy who tend to work the count, thus getting to the opponent’s bullpen faster.
That, and the success rate of a player who gets into favorable counts is much higher than a guy behind in the count all the time. While it’s not foolproof, if you see more pitches in an at-bat/per plate appearance, chances are that you know the strikezone well and are ahead in the count more often.
