Texans, it was discussed earlier. Correa was high on every mock draft. He’s only 17 and he will almost certainly sign with the team rather than attend Miami. He’s got great fielding skills, great size, “unreal” hand-eye coordination, very raw at the plate but good power. The Astros think he could be the SS or 3rd baseman of the future and that could be be a 25 HR a year type of player.

I’m actually more interested in the compensation round pick we had yesterday. Lance McCullers, from what I’ve heard, may be a steal. He’s a high school pitcher in Florida right now and it was thought he might go in the first 10-20 picks. He tumbled all the way into the compensation round last night. We won’t use our entire $7.2 million on Correa, so we might be able to sign McCullers if we also commit to develop him as a starter. He’s apparently indicated that if any team tries to make him a reliever he’ll just take his scholarship to Florida.

A steal if he signs. I think the #1 pick has little negotiating power though so maybe they won’t break the bank for him… what are you gonna do, go to college and then maybe if you play well be the #1 pick again?

I’m not sure if the Red Sox are idiots or brilliant drafting a bunch of guys with AAA ceilings to try to sign underslot and use the money. Just remember you lose anything from an unsigned pick. Your draft cap really means nothing. What you have to offer any tough sign, is the sum total of the difference between slot and actual from all your underslot signees.
