Jonathan Papelbon Thinks Umpire D.J. Reyburn Should be Fired or Demoted
Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon was less than pleased with the work of home plate umpire D.J. Reyburn following Monday night’s 4-3 loss to the Dodgers.
The founding member of Cobra Kai came on in the ninth with the scored tied 3-3 and promptly served up a lead-off triple to Dee Gordon, followed by an RBI single off the bat of Elian Herrera that proved to be the game-winning run. The problem is that Papelbon thought he had Gordon struck out, so he made an attempt to talk to Reyburn after the inning, but the engaging ump had zero interest in chatting. Reyburn had already tossed Don Mattingly and bench coach Trey Hillman earlier in the game.
Unless Papelbon was showing him up — which if he had, he would’ve been tossed rather quickly — it’s unclear as to why the two couldn’t have a brief, reasonable discussion. It reeks of immaturity and a disproportionate air of self-importance. NBA referees are almost always willing to discuss a call so long as the player isn’t acting like Rasheed Wallace. But that’s a typical MLB umpire for you, as tender as filet mignon with a thirst for dramatics deeper than Meryl Streep.
After the game, Papelbon suggested that Reyburn go back to Triple-A, saying that when one doesn’t do their job, they get demoted or fired.

What’s the consensus on the Astros’ first overall pick? Local radio was comparing him to A-Rod.

america thinks jonathan papelbon should be liquidated.
June 5th, 2012 at 12:21 PM
looks like he is taking a shit in that screen cap.

Jonathan Papelbon as the calm, coherent voice of reason. Alright.
/it’s been a good run, everybody

This is Papelbon. Jonathan Papelbon. Consider the source here.

There should certainly be some accountability for umpires who mess up calls. I’m not sure how you could penalize or punish pomposity, which has seemingly grown in recent years (looking at you Joe West).
June 5th, 2012 at 12:22 PM
Or doing his best Rocky impression.
June 5th, 2012 at 12:23 PM
He really needs to shut up and worry about his average fastball.

first strike – public caning
second strike – stocks outside the balpark for 24 hours
third strike – liquidation

Yeah, they pretty much serve as the instigator at this point. Very dramatic in their dismissal of conversation. It’s pathetic.

Well considering what the kid from Stanford was demanding, I think they made the right choice for them. Surprised they didn’t go after Buxton, but not complaining. It’s a crap shoot though with this draft. No real sure thing guys in this draft so who knows.

Tulo.

Throw more than 4 pitches out of 17 in the strikezone and you’ll get that borderline call on the 5th, Jon. It’s about as borderline of a call as you’ll find. Right on the line. He got plenty of swings on balls outside the zone. Make them swing and miss and you don’t have that problem.
Can’t fault the umpire here. Looked at Kershaw and Worley’s charts, too. Umpire missed 5 of 184 called pitches. That’s a pretty good clip.

I dunno about “THEY” I think every night I am watching a game I see umps and catchers, pitchers, and managers discussing calls and the strike zone. There are a few like West and his crew who fit this bill, but seems like most are willing to discuss strike zone.

How hilarious would it be if the Phillies traded for Youkilis? Getting Boston’s two biggest assholes that the fans have always hated.
June 5th, 2012 at 12:27 PM
Better field than Alex. Not as polished of a hitter. Correa’s fielding videos would be considered pornography in the Tom Emansky household.

I was at the bar with no sound – why did Mattingly get ejected? Balls/strikes?

Could grow into a third baseman. Has excellent hand-eye coordination but very raw at the plate. But the Astros think they can work with him on his swing and plate approach and that he could be a 25 home run guy. He’ll also be cheaper than Appel which allows us to use some of that $7.2 million bonus budget money on the other pick, Lance McCullers Jr., who appears to be an absolute steal if we can sign him (he’s currently committed to Florida).

MLB Umpires belong to the World Umpires Association. They are not MLB employees IIRC. More like a vendor. I believe the Umps get graded, which then leads to them getting crew chief assignments and playoffs, etc.
Also, bitching about balls and strikes midgame has been verboten for a while. It has been something that will get you run for a long, long, long time. Umps are gonna call their games. This is like bitching about people being able to scream during a golf match. It’s just outside of how the game has been done for a while.
If a person wants to nuke the contact with WUA, start over, then that’s a legit gripe. It just screams people have no idea who games are umpired.
June 5th, 2012 at 12:31 PM
Don’t know. I didn’t see the game. Was watching the Cup Final and the draft. I just looked at the F/X charts for the ball/strike calls.
Speaking of getting ejected… if Jeter plays 3 more years and doesn’t get ejected, he’ll break Stan Musial’s record of 22 seasons without getting ejected. Your weird stat of the day.
June 5th, 2012 at 12:31 PM
He’s at fault for being a pompous dick.
June 5th, 2012 at 12:32 PM
Someone like Joe West should eject him in the next game, just to be a shit head
June 5th, 2012 at 12:34 PM
Can’t argue with you here. He should at least just tell Papelbon that the ball was not in the strikezone in his opinion so he called it that way. Have to imagine that Papelbon wasn’t exactly diplomatic in his approach considering his track record.
June 5th, 2012 at 12:36 PM
Reyburn is apparently a brand new umpire. This was just his 2nd game. That’s probably why he didn’t want to talk to Papelbon. Doesn’t know how to go about that quite yet. He struggled with curveballs and sinkers.
June 5th, 2012 at 12:36 PM

throw in Brett Myers and you;ve got your self a party
June 5th, 2012 at 12:37 PM
Talking after the third out is hardly uncommon. Yawn.
June 5th, 2012 at 12:38 PM
Not knocking you, but I think it’s annoying when “draft experts” from any sport compare an amateur who has never played a professional game to a hall of fame player. It initiates a completely unmanageable expectation level. That being said, I liked Houston’s pick. I think Correa has more upside than Appel for sure.
June 5th, 2012 at 12:38 PM
Appel
fell to sixth. mlb draft show needs a green room camera
June 5th, 2012 at 12:39 PM
Screw the White Sox for taking Hawkins.
June 5th, 2012 at 12:40 PM
Totally agree. Fried was getting Kershaw and Cole Hamels comparisons. You’re not helping the kids by making those comparisons because fans will inevitably wonder why they did/didn’t turn out to be those players.
Albert Almora was compared to Adam Jones. It doesn’t mean I should expect him to be an all-star by age 25.
June 5th, 2012 at 12:41 PM
There’s zero chance Mark Appel signs, right?
June 5th, 2012 at 12:41 PM
we laughed about goodell’s hugs….can you imagine clinching with selig? his mashing with the top pick was high comedy
June 5th, 2012 at 12:42 PM
sorry appel fell to 8th
June 5th, 2012 at 12:46 PM
Rumors were that Boras was trying to push him all the way down to 16 for the Nationals after he fell past the first two picks. I think the Pirates will be willing to take the financial penalties but they won’t go so far over slot amount so as to forfeit a future pick in penalties.
I think he’ll sign. He’s only got the new CBA to blame for him falling. It was supposed to fix this problem, not exacerbate it.
June 5th, 2012 at 12:47 PM
he does come from the same Centaur stock as A-Rod
June 5th, 2012 at 12:51 PM
why mole? the chance he could go higher next year comes with a chance of injury too
June 5th, 2012 at 12:57 PM
Talking after the third out is hardly uncommon. Yawn.
Agreed, but it’s not abnormal to have them send you to the dugout.
June 5th, 2012 at 12:57 PM
Well he refused to speak to Pirates reporters and gave a bullshit “I’m focused on Stanford” line.
June 5th, 2012 at 1:03 PM
Yeah, but he’ll get more money this year. Next year, as a college senior, he’d have zero leverage.

Someone mentioned Boras. If he signed with an agent, could he even go back to Stanford next year?
June 5th, 2012 at 1:23 PM
Local radio was comparing him to A-Rod.
Taller than A-Rod and still growing. Not likely to see the show as a SS.
June 5th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
Sign? Oh no, Mr Boras is only an “adviser” you see.
June 5th, 2012 at 2:08 PM
If the Phillies get Youk, I’ll be really pissed off. Papeldouche is enough for me.
