Audio: Alexi Lalas Went on Mike & Mike and Was Asked How Lionel Messi Would Do at Euro 2012

Click this link and fast-forward to the 1:05 mark. Adnan Virk, filling in for Mike Greenberg, asked soccer analyst Alexi Lalas how Lionel Messi would do in Euro 2012.
That’s Argentina‘s Lionel Messi.
Props to Alexi Lalas for keeping it together – you can sort of hear a laugh before he starts to answer – and not cracking up.

At least they didn’t ask if Team USA had a chance in the Euros.

Maybe Lalas should have been interviewed by Jorge Arangure. That guy seems to know what he’s talking about.

Big Lead Sports: snidely pointing out other people’s mistakes while blindly ignoring our own since 2010.

I’ll give Adnan Virk the benefit of the doubt and say he just misspoke. He has worked on an exclusively Soccer channel in the past (GolTV).
June 5th, 2012 at 11:23 AM
Agree completely.

Heard this on the way to work. Did not occur to me that it was a stupid question (until it was answered) although if you had asked me before I heard it where Messi was from I’m pretty sure I knew it was Argentina.

ESPN trots out their idiot morning show and talks about a sport they don’t follow and it’s a train wreck. Shocking.
June 5th, 2012 at 11:26 AM
Can’t fucking wait for England-France on Monday.
June 5th, 2012 at 11:27 AM
Haven’t you been paying attention? Nobody who is employed by ESPN is allowed to misspeak. If they do, they shall be ridiculed and made to feel inferior.

I have such a boner for the Euros that I’ll be leaving work early to watch the first match even though it’s Poland-Greece.

Some commenters should start up a sports talk station where the pressing topics of the day are discussed, notably factual errors and/or asinine opinions found on sports blogs.
I always play for the apiary team in the national entomology soccer tournament, but have been known to sub for the beetle guys (coleopterists) from time to time.

If there was ever a game where both teams end up losing….Losing Cahill is huge for England IMO.
June 5th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
still laughing over here. +1
June 5th, 2012 at 11:37 AM
Adnan Virk should be embarrassed I say. Not as embarrassed as someone who admits to listening to Mike and Mike, but embarrassed nonetheless.

Greece Euro 2004 = Chelsea UCL 2012. Dreadful to watch.

I’m going to New York to watch Brazil-Argentina on Saturday. I’ll miss Germany-Portugal. Just a bad scene, all around. Might pop in to Nevada Smith’s (popular soccer bar in NYC) to watch Spain-Italy on Sunday.

I’ll root against England until they finally hire someone who can pick a fucking squad.
June 5th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
Meaning, you are not fit for public use during a Germany game? Or that you have to miss for something not good?
June 5th, 2012 at 11:43 AM

Might want to get in pretty early to get a seat. Tried to go there for the 2010 WC, and the line was like a block and a half long.

I envision TBL and/or Duffy listening/watching to ESPN, and immediately Googling whatever they say to fact check it.
June 5th, 2012 at 11:45 AM
So TBL:ESPN::commenters:TBL?
June 5th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
I don’t mind going to the Brazil-Argentina game. Just wish Germany game wasn’t at the same time. I’ll be checking the phone constantly to get an update and be anxious that I’m missing Germany play, therefore not fully enjoying the game that’s happening right in front of my eyes.
June 5th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
Funny. Because I can’t ever picture TBL doing any sort of fact checking.
June 5th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
Pretty much. Actually, that’s a really good analogy.

Good thing they didn’t refer to Mark Sanchez as “lefty Matt” or this story would have no legs and be swept under the rug.
June 5th, 2012 at 12:02 PM
So pumped. Throwing a weekend long party with beer from the competing countries culminating in Ireland’s glorious 1- Nil injury time win over Crotia Sunday when all hell will break loose.
You can get every game online streaming from TSN for $19.99, I’m buying it so I do not have to worry about finding stable streams.

Also, seems like Yardwok has a kung-fu grip on the comment section eh?

For anyone who bothers to check this thread later, Zonal Marking is doing previews of all the teams that are very in-depth. You can find them here.

Excellent site. I go there a lot. You live in DC, right? I heard it’s a fun city to be in when these major soccer tournaments happen. Lot of foreigners, so you can visit lots of places that have large gatherings of fans.
