The USMNT is relying on older players, and not Zidane-caliber older players. This was a team that struggled defending pace and athleticism in 2010. The issue is clear. Klinsmann isn’t harboring delusions. The trouble is the next generation, due to injuries or ineffectiveness, has yet to step forward and even press for playing time.

Klinsmann will have some difficult strategic decisions to make; the older guys are our best chance for qualifying, but there’s no way that they’ll convert into the sort fluid, technical side that he envisions for us. Maybe the younger players still have time to develop, but would you trust them to win a qualifier away in Central America? And even if you write-off 2014 as generally being in the transition phase, there’s no way that potentially missing the World Cup can be good for youth development – the US plays so few competitive matches already. So it looks like the next few years are going to have Klinsmann reopening some of Bradley’s pragmatism.

I have Germany winning, but I have enough variants that I doubt anyone will have the same bracket.

It’s crazy that this isn’t drilled into every young player’s brain at an early age. My dad (who was an all-American in college) forced me to use my left foot when I was a kid to the point where I actually became a better shooter with my left. Still am now. Maybe 5 of 18 players on my current team are capable with both feet and every single one of them played in college.

I always wanted to be left-footed, so I worked on it. Always a fan of warming up with my left foot only in warm-ups and then watch as the other team shades you to the right and then you blow by them.
