Aging Squad Does Not Bode Well For U.S. in 2014 World Cup
The USMNT was pantsed by Brazil. They looked insipid in a draw with those chipper fellows to the north. There are concerns about the team’s direction under Jurgen Klinsmann. Tactics are important. The “nastiness” quotient might be as well. Another crucial factor though, is age. This team will be very old in 2014, which does not augur well for World Cup success.
Six of Klinsmann’s 10 outfield starters against Canada (Bocanegra, Cherundolo, Goodson, Jones, Donovan and Gomez) will be 32 or older by the 2014 World Cup. He brought another from that age bracket, Onyewu , off the bench. That tally does not include Dempsey and Wondolowski, who will both be 31. That won’t be the exact XI. MLS 32 is not the same as European 32, but this looks to be a team in its twilight. That’s not good in a tournament where fitness can be decisive.
Bruce Arena’s USMNT reached the World Cup quarterfinals in 2002. Presumably, their next goal is to reach the semifinals. Looking back at the last four World Cups, old teams have not gotten far. Of the 16 teams that reached the World Cup semifinals from 1998-2010, the average number of 32-year-old outfield starters was 1.37. The only teams who had three were 1998 Brazil and 2006 France. Those teams got away with it, because those players were awesome.
Brazil’s 1998 trio – Aldair (32), Dunga (34) and Bebeto (34) – were veteran World Cup winners from the 1994 team. Two of 2006 France’s three – Zidane (33) and Thuram (34) – were veterans from the 1998 World Cup team. The third, Claude Makelele (33) was arguably the world’s best defensive midfielder in 2006. Perusing the 32-plus names on other teams brings up names such as Figo, Blanc, Cannavaro and Klose. No slight to the aging American stars, but they are not quite in that class.
From the World Cup winners, only two of the four teams, 2010 Spain and 2006 Italy, started a player 31 or older in the final. Neither started one in midfield or up front.
The USMNT is relying on older players, and not Zidane-caliber older players. This was a team that struggled defending pace and athleticism in 2010. The issue is clear. Klinsmann isn’t harboring delusions. The trouble is the next generation, due to injuries or ineffectiveness, has yet to step forward and even press for playing time. The group draw could be fortuitous. A number of best case scenarios could invigorate the squad, but it’s hard envisioning much success from the present group in Brazil. They still have work to do just to get there.

Aging SquadHaving to play soccer Does Not Bode Well For U.S. in 2014 World Cup/fixed
June 5th, 2012 at 2:34 PM
My only worry for this team in 2014 is in central defense. Cameron, Omar G, Ream, Whitbread, George John, Boss, Opara need to take the next step in order to take over for Boca and Gooch. I already think Gooch will be replaced by Goodson who I don’t really rate that high. I would say around half the players on this roster won’t be at the WC in 2014

Was anyone expecting different?
June 5th, 2012 at 2:35 PM
We’re a nation full of Bruno Cheyrous in a Zidane world.
Should basically just start focusing on Gold Cups at this point. Mexico is miles beyond us.
Good work Sunil. Good, good work.
June 5th, 2012 at 2:35 PM
maybe we should get some younger players then since it’s still 2 years away.

an asian squad wouldn’t bode well for the US either…prolly some fishy citizen stuff going on.
then again…france…

We’re fucked this cycle. We should qualify (we should always qualify) but that’s it. Our defense is fucking awful.

June 5th, 2012 at 2:43 PM
@ huskerdawg- I think the RB and LB will be OK with Johnson, Lichaj, Parkhurst, Cherundolo(even though he will be old. Who knows maybe Chandler will come back by then… The CB’s are what worry me as Boca isn’t getting any faster over the next 2 years.
June 5th, 2012 at 2:43 PM
This is what pisses me off as I hate those fucking ass hats. They are going to own us for the next 4-5 years.
June 5th, 2012 at 2:45 PM
I’d be pretty surprised/furious if any of these other than Donovan and Dempsey are on the 2014 squad. The other guys need to be beaten out for spots by younger players in the next two years.

If Onyewu is anywhere near the 2014 squad I’ll want to cry.

For how many years in a row is it a story that soccer is a burgeoning sport in this country until said fact is proved untrue simply due to all of said stories that preceded it.

Simple, yet elegant.
June 5th, 2012 at 2:50 PM
Goodson is only a year older than Dempsey and will make the team unless someone really steps up their game. Jones, Beckerman, Wondo, Gomez and Onyewu will have a tough time making this team. There is a lot of young attacking talent coming through which should add a lot of competition for the front 6 spots. A lot of those kids need to break through to the first team next year though- Boyd, Wooten, Gyau, Guido. Then you still have young guys like- Corona, Morales, Gatt, Shea, Agudelo, Gil,Mix who are playing with the first team already

Having been around some people who work in the equipment room at a Big 12 school recently, I can say that changing your uniforms, having black in your uniforms, has a greater impact on potential recruits than does academic reputation (for example…and by a mile).
June 5th, 2012 at 2:51 PM
Bocanegra, Cherundo, Onyewu
Damn. That’s an old defense that will get exposed. Boca and Cherundo kinda overachieved in the last WC and Onyewu hasnt been the same since he wrecked his knee, and that was ages ago.
I’d say we’d be lucky to get out of our draw. Hope I am so wrong. Pissing away that Ghana game with bad tactics and limited depth will haunt us.

I like those better than their standard ones.
I didn’t care for Georgia’s black uniforms, but as black is at least an accent color, it sort of made sense for them. These Arkansas uniforms are an ugly mess though. The fuck are those shiny panels? Why does the number get bluish-gray at the bottom? They make less sense than the plotline of Battleship.

Soccer’s popularity isn’t disproven by the USMNT sucking ass. England’s national team is cold diarrhea in a dixie cup and it’s still their national pastime, if “being pale and having horrible cultural output” isn’t counted as a sport.
Ten years ago it was impossible to catch the Euros on TV here. This summer ESPN is showing every game. Stick your “soccer isn’t popular” sorrys in a sack.
June 5th, 2012 at 2:53 PM
Having been around some people who work in the equipment room at a Big 12 school recently, I can say that changing your uniforms, having black in your uniforms, has a greater impact on potential recruits than does academic reputation (for example…and by a mile).
I know I am by far in the minority here, but changing your uniform to add a color to match the whims of an 18 year old kid is stupid.

June 5th, 2012 at 2:54 PM
It has grown by leaps and bounds, though. We were in the KO round last cycle and we left a bit disappointed. We won our group and left the tournament disappointed.
June 5th, 2012 at 2:55 PM
I want my team to get the best players. I don’t really care how they go about doing it as long as A) it’s not illegal or B) they don’t get caught doing illegal shit.
June 5th, 2012 at 2:56 PM
Paper or plastic?
June 5th, 2012 at 2:56 PM
The defense has been consistently ignored for as long as I can remember. There have not been any defensive stalwarts on the USMNT to keep attacking teams from shredding us. If you say Alexi Lalas, I will reach through these interwebs and slap you. Has there ever been an emphasis on building a solid back line?

England is horrible
June 5th, 2012 at 2:59 PM
Does that have to do with the domestic product or the international product – both on and off the field (i.e. ESPN’s growing clout worldwide?)
June 5th, 2012 at 2:59 PM
All of this. I think similar to the way Damarcus Beasley has fallen off the team from 02, many of those guys listed will not be on the actual WC team.
June 5th, 2012 at 2:59 PM
England’s national team is cold diarrhea in a dixie cup and it’s still their national pastime, if “being pale and having horrible cultural output”
For jolly old England, patriot Lane Meyer injected some color into his football-loving pale face. A purple, bloated color.

Soccer has caught on, though. It just hasn’t manifested itself into a great national side…yet. The only way for U.S. soccer to get better is for Sunil and Co. to get fired though.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:01 PM
England is horrible
Thanks. I guess I didn’t have them winning a game anyway.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:01 PM
They do this in football, too, ya know.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:02 PM
I am essentially giving Klinsmann a pass on 2014. 2018 is when results will really matter.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:03 PM
Tim Ream should be starting at center defense within a couple years. He’ll only get better at Bolton. Not sure if Holden figures into the mid-field at all, but he’s a possibility.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:03 PM
All I want for 2014 is to make the World Cup. That has to be the minimum, though. After that I want to see our youth system totally changed (probably won’t happen) and I want to see Sunil shit canned.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:03 PM
England are just horrible underachievers and their players are often overrated by their own media and fans (yeah Michael Carrick and Rio Ferdinand are REALLY going to make a difference in this tournament, okay).
June 5th, 2012 at 3:04 PM
If he can stop getting hurt he should be a starter by 2014.

I want my team to get the best players. I don’t really care how they go about doing it as long as A) it’s not illegal or B) they don’t get caught doing illegal shit.
Like I said, I’m aware that my view on the matter is a minority one in these parts. But I simply do not agree with changing something about the institution to fit what adolescent minds think is cool. Because, for lack of a better way to put it, teenagers are fucking stupid.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:07 PM
Yep, only thing worse than “soccer is going to take over america in 2 YEARS, MARK MY WORDSSSSSSS” mouth breathers are those who latch onto any and every little scant evidence they can find to disprove the fact that soccer is here to stay. Even if it won’t ever become the national pastime.

/Fuck England
June 5th, 2012 at 3:08 PM
I agree on Ream. He had a few shaky Gold Cup games and suddenly everyone hates him. He’s composed on the ball and is an excellent distributor, which we desperately need in the back. Holden’s problem will be injuries – if he’s healthy, he probably starts.
Anyone banging the drum for Rio is a fucking idiot. I’d argue for Carrick but you’re right, he probably wouldn’t make a huge difference. Still think it reflects a pattern of horrible squad selection by the managers though…
June 5th, 2012 at 3:08 PM
The Jester of Tortuga.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:09 PM
Carrick and Richards both refused to be on the standby list. If they were team players they’d be on the plane. They’re prima donna bitches so they rightly got left at home.
The outrage over Rio is a joke. Aside from the fact that he’s a ball playing CB and doesn’t fit into Roy’s tactics at all, Ferguson himself said that Rio shouldn’t go because he cannot stay fit. If you’re in the middle of an injury crisis you shouldn’t replace the guy with someone who can’t stay healthy to save his life (granted, neither can Martin Kelly but he won’t fall over and die at the thought of having to play twice in a week, either).
June 5th, 2012 at 3:09 PM
The “soccer will never catch on” crowd are the people who still think Real America = white people and won’t catch on to demographics until it’s too late.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:09 PM
But if they run really fast, I want them.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:11 PM
Yeah with him it’s more of a “look at the CMs the elite countries have … does it really matter?” thing.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:11 PM
Worse than both are the “lacrosse is the fasting growing sport!” people.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:11 PM
Ream just needs to be more physical which hopefully will happen. He seems to have upped his game mentally since the switch to Bolton.
Rio should definitely be on the England team. Who is better than him? I hope England isn’t counting on Jones to play CB because he isn’t ready for that yet. If everyone was healthy in England then I can see where you would not take Rio, but with the injuries he should be in the squad.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:12 PM
I agree with this, and I would not want them to get embarrassed in group play. But if its a tough group and they don’t make it out, I won’t be calling for Klinnsmann to get replaced.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:13 PM
Replacing Klinnsmann won’t matter if Sunil doesn’t go, too.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:14 PM
@ moleman – Ferguson just recently went on to say Rio should make the team. At this point he wouldn’t be counted on to be a starter so why not bring him there in case injuries do happen to the starters? He played a lot of games this year and didn’t have any major injuries.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:15 PM
this is a legit concern. arugula II just retired due to gray hair on his pubus. really hurts the squad.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:15 PM
But if they run really fast, I want them.
Clearly.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:16 PM
You mean aside from the fact that there’s a shitload of bad blood between him and the best healthy CB that England has left at this point?
Granted it’s not like England have a history of drama sideshows ruining tournaments…
June 5th, 2012 at 3:16 PM
Get to know this name, U.S. fans. He will be too young in 2014, but 2018 should be his time moving forward.
Lagos Kunga.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:17 PM
I don’t see Klinsman staying on as coach after the WC. I can see him moving into a Technical Director type role. I wonder who the next US coach will be: Kreis, Sigi, Kinnear or some European coach. I would take Lowe if he would want to succeed JK again
June 5th, 2012 at 3:18 PM
I remember back before I started following the EPL more closely that whenever the USA produced a bright young player I thought “he’s going to be awesome!”
You can tell so very little at that point. Maybe one in twenty wonderkids ends up being a top player.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:19 PM
Talk about your all time demotions.
RAFA FOR USMNT!
June 5th, 2012 at 3:19 PM
Just off the top of my head I can think of 10 Spanish midfielders that would start for England. Xavi, Iniesta, Alonso, Fabregas, Navas, Silva, Mata, Busquets, Martinez, Cazorla.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:19 PM
That 10 year old american kid that got signed into Barcelona’s youth team. How is he doing?

June 5th, 2012 at 3:21 PM
Oh no doubt, but my brother worked with this kid’s youth coach. This dude would tell my brother all of the shit this kid was doing and my brother never thought much of it. Then Chelsea flew the kid out for a 10-day training session with their academy and he blew up. He’s now spending the summer training with Porto I believe. He went to the U.S. trials at 13 and was the leading scorer and is by all accounts a stud. I hope he leaves the states and trains full time in Europe in their academies.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:22 PM
John Terry will be getting burned as usual in this tournament. I am excited to see how Ox and Welbeck do out there for England. Sad that Wilshire wasn’t healthy for this tournament and to a much lesser extent Cleverly who was looking good before he got injured. Would have been nice to see some of England’s younger players get a chance
June 5th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
Ream seemed to be decent in facilitating the ball up the field but mediocre in captaining his line when on the defensive. That sound about right? (based off what I saw at Gold Cup).
June 5th, 2012 at 3:24 PM
They are. They’re just not Manchester United players so people are pissed about it. Kelly is the best defender in England’s youth setup (fuck Phil Jones, if he is ever an elite defender I’ll eat my hat) and Henderson is outstanding for the U21s (and their captain) when played in his proper role, not as a winger like under Klueless Kenny.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:24 PM
I don’t disagree with this. I also don’t think I’m wrong to say he’s the best healthy England CB available. Which is a biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig problem.

June 5th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
@ oranje- that was more a joke as of anything, but he could make it as he actually has some technical skill.
I hope Jones doesn’t make it bc he is a yellow/red card waiting to happen. I am worried that he will get a dumb red in an important qualifier this year. Ream definitely plays the way JK wants so he will have a chance to make it. I would love to see Gyau and Gatt on the wings for the US, probably the fastest tandem they would have.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:29 PM
They are. They’re just not Manchester United players so people are pissed about it. I agree that Phil Jones is not a good defender right now and not sure he would have made it if Smalling was healthy. Henderson didn’t really impress me to much this year, but he is still young and like you said was out of position.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:31 PM
Phil Jones was picked because he can play CB, RB, and CM. He’s also 20 years old so I’m fine with him not being labeled “elite.” Kelly is excellent and should have been selected in the first place.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:31 PM
His best games were when he was played centrally. Granted, most of the year when he did play centrally he had to drop back further anyway because Comolli and Dalglish provided no reasonable cover for Lucas so every attacking midfielder had to drop back to cover more often.
He drives the midfield for the U21s though, that’s why he made it.
If he has to play much though it’s going to be a problem just because that means a lot of other people are hurt.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
It’s still going Geoff. One thing that I’ve always found funny is how hardcore soccer fans, (especially Europeans) look at national team as a nuisance to the “real” football otherwise known as club football. They hate the international break like it’s the plague. But when time comes for the tournament, it does crazy number of viewership in Europe.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:34 PM
@ MP- I am a MUFC fan but I don’t think Jones was a good CB this year and wasn’t as good as Smalling in that position either(which isn’t saying much) Where do you see Jones lining up for MUFC and England in the next few years?
@moleman- it always cracks me up that everyone talks about the last 2-3 players in the team as those guys rarely ever play
June 5th, 2012 at 3:35 PM
This is so fucking true. I can use both feet really well because I was told to do that. Now I watch players overseas and most of them are borderline inept with the opposite foot.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:36 PM
Here’s the link to that block quote.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:37 PM
I’d like to say that while I respect Duffy’s concerns regarding our aging squad, I think it’s a bit early to be overly worried. There are a number of young, up-and-coming Americans, whether in the MLS or abroad, who may be names to watch in two years at the World Cup. Josh Gatt comes to mind.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:40 PM
Anyone got any ideas on how Group A is going to play out in the Euros? I think I have Czech Republic and Russia advancing right now, but Poland being a home team and having some Dortmund players I really like is making me reconsider.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:40 PM
Probably as a DCM. Have to be patient with both as them, as they are only 20 and 22. And United won’t need either of them to be a full time CB next year, as Vidic will be back, Evans (finally) had an excellent season, and Rio will obviously get games.
BUT DOWNING, WHYYYYYYYY?
June 5th, 2012 at 3:42 PM
Downing has played well with the national team for the last year even though he was an abject failure at club level.
What other left wingers were screaming out for selection over him?
Again. Larger problem isn’t the players that were picked, rather that holy shit what other options are there?
June 5th, 2012 at 3:42 PM
I went with Poland and Russia.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
I’m going with Russia and Poland. The Czechs’ offense worries me. Rosicky is banged up going into the tourney and Milan Baros is still their number one striker.
June 5th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
I got Czech Rep and Poland going through, though it’s probably because I am biased.

June 5th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
It’s crazy that this isn’t drilled into every young player’s brain at an early age. My dad (who was an all-American in college) forced me to use my left foot when I was a kid to the point where I actually became a better shooter with my left. Still am now. Maybe 5 of 18 players on my current team are capable with both feet and every single one of them played in college.

Kaka just linked to Galaxy. Doesn’t surprise me as I think Keane and Landon will be leaving soon. Keane before Landon though

Screw all of you, Czech Rep is winning Group A!

Aren’t MLS teams only allowed 1 Designated Player slot? How is it that Galaxy and Red Bulls keeps adding these high-priced players?
June 5th, 2012 at 3:54 PM
They are allowed 3 DPs
June 5th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
I always wanted to be left-footed, so I worked on it. Always a fan of warming up with my left foot only in warm-ups and then watch as the other team shades you to the right and then you blow by them.
/can’t blow by anyone anymore

Somebody say YardWok?

Now, let’s not be douchey and submit more than one entry per person in that TBL euro group.
I’m looking forward to going up against all you losers. Though it was sad to find out that you can’t check what others have picked in their bracket. It’d be nice to know what everyone picked before the tournament starts.
June 5th, 2012 at 4:00 PM
Germany for the win.
June 5th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
whens the deadline on that?
June 5th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
Tourney starts at 11 am EST this Friday.
June 5th, 2012 at 4:06 PM
Somebody say DPs?
June 5th, 2012 at 4:07 PM
I have Germany winning, but I have enough variants that I doubt anyone will have the same bracket.
June 5th, 2012 at 4:08 PM
Also I don’t remember how old I was when I made my ESPN username a Smashing Pumpkins reference, but it was at least ten years ago.

Lizarazu: “How do you explain Rio Ferdinand’s omission, apart from his problem with Terry?” Wenger: “You can’t explain it any other way.”
June 5th, 2012 at 4:26 PM
Klinsmann will have some difficult strategic decisions to make; the older guys are our best chance for qualifying, but there’s no way that they’ll convert into the sort fluid, technical side that he envisions for us. Maybe the younger players still have time to develop, but would you trust them to win a qualifier away in Central America? And even if you write-off 2014 as generally being in the transition phase, there’s no way that potentially missing the World Cup can be good for youth development – the US plays so few competitive matches already. So it looks like the next few years are going to have Klinsmann reopening some of Bradley’s pragmatism.
June 5th, 2012 at 4:30 PM
Basically a presence in CONCACAF is a huge hindrance to youth development, both for us and Mexico, because there are only ever meaningless friendlies to play them in.
June 5th, 2012 at 4:58 PM
ar1186- I agree and it would be nice to have WC qualifying with Conmebol but that just won’t happen. I hope that Concacaf gets to join the Copa America soon like they have been talking about. That would provide a good test for the US and Mexico instead of having the Gold Cup
June 5th, 2012 at 5:23 PM
Yeah, without that we can’t ever expect an elite team to emerge out of one Gold Cup game, some money-spinning friendlies, and the occasional Confederations Cup. All the other regions (Africa, South America, even Asia) have that over us.
