Mad Men Recap: “Commissions and Fees”
Don encapsulates “Commissions and Fees” with his pitch to Dow Chemical. Happiness and success are transitory and leave you unfulfilled. For multiple characters, the sacrifices necessary to attain success are not glossed over by the result. For the second straight week, once subtle plot points explode.
Lane receives what he wanted. The “four A’s” grants him professional recognition with a prestigious post. His wife finally respects him. He now owns a Jaguar XKE, symbolic of manhood, the hollowness of manhood and his own inability to escape his own failure. That car exposed his duplicity at the company. Unable to pay for it, it will now expose his duplicity with his wife.
He attempts suicide fittingly with the car, which characteristically won’t start. He then goes to the office, tidies up his affairs and hangs himself in his office. Potentially, we have seen the outlet for this season’s persistent death imagery (elevator shaft, murders etc.), though there’s still one more episode.
Sally is no longer at the Codfish Ball. She wants adulthood. She wears makeup and gogo boots to meet her “boyfriend,” she orders coffee with a generous helping of sugar. Though, when she finally becomes a woman, in the bathroom of the Natural History Museum, she becomes scared and reverts to childhood. She undermines her mother, but, when most fearful, clings to her.
Joan gets what she wanted, independence and security divorced from her sexuality. Though she can only transcend her sexuality by degrading it in the most base and literal fashion. She has the hard power, but it came at the expense of all the soft power she accrued. It’s her dirty little secret (not really a secret), which becomes pivotal.
Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce obtains the car account and subsequent stability. It is now growing as a business, though it came not from their gifts or their ingenuity but an unholy act, that could ruin everything.
As always with Mad Men, we circle back to Don. We’ve seen him lie. We’ve seen him cheat on his wife. His whole life is an artifice. His profession is cynically exploiting that artifice. He’s pragmatic, yet, when it’s most essential, Don still has a moral compass. He has lines he won’t cross and beliefs more important than his own self-preservation. It’s what makes him a compelling character. He tries to do the right thing, even if, in this episode (and with Adam Whitman), it went incredibly wrong.
The only person who gets what he wants without conflicts is Glen. His innermost longing is innocent, for a father.

That scene with Lane was superb direction and acting. Just fucking incredible. You knew Lane was hanging there yet the shock of seeing him as that door shut was palpable.

Glen is creepy. Every scene with him is uncomfortable. I was just waiting for him to try to rape Megan Draper.
The scenes with him (he’s Weiner’s son if you didn’t know) and Kiernan Shipka were not acted well. It was rigid and bogged down the episode.

Bees?
June 4th, 2012 at 12:39 PM
I found myself saying last night that Glen is far, far less creepy than in the first season or two. His early scenes with Betty…yikes.
I was debating whether the Glen/Sally scenes weren’t acted well or it’s just because they’re teenagers and they’re meant to be awkward. It’s an awkward relationship and that certainly comes through.
June 4th, 2012 at 12:41 PM
I think that debate can definitely be had. I wonder the same thing. Is it just awkward moments from teenagers or do they seem so bad at acting because we expect nothing but stellar work from Hamm, Moss, Slattery, etc.?

Between Sally and Sansa Stark there’s been far too much discussion about menstruation on my TV of late
Thought Glen was a little too on the nose with his comments about everyone being miserable all the time…one line of dialogue summed up 5 seasons of this show

you could make an argument the elevator shaft wasn’t death imagery at all, but more symbolism of an unfulfilled career/lifestyle. the void of personality.
the murders, in retrospect could also be argued, not death imagery, but foreshadowing of how characters will compromise their core beliefs and fall victim to the consequences of their actions.

Kind of a dark episode. I loved Don’s pitch to Dow and Roger saying right after “I’ll buy you a drink if you get all the blood out of your mouth” or something to that effect was perfect. John Slattery must praise his maker every day for getting the lines that he does.
I was not surprised that Lane killed himself, but I was surprised with how much they showed. The makeup work on his corpse was excellent, but very unsettling. Don’t position that he can’t be left there hanging was a nice bookend of humanity against his persona in the Dow meeting.
The last two episodes have sort of felt like the show blowing its load on a number of story lines that they’ve teased along for awhile. It’s kind of dizzying with how much faster things are happening relative to the normal pace of an episode.
June 4th, 2012 at 12:48 PM
I hate the Glen storyline. I think it’s only there because of the kid playing Glen.
As soon as I saw Lane walking out to the car to kill himself, I knew that car wasn’t going to start. Had hoped that it meant he wouldn’t do the job, but he is a persistent little bugger.

Jared Harris was tremendous as Lane in that episode.
That whole scene in Don’s office when Don confronted him with the truth was brilliant. He went from feigning surprise, to uncomfortable lying, to indignant ranting, and then…acceptance of his fate. It was an acting clinic.
June 4th, 2012 at 12:50 PM
Probably also some left over guilt with what happened with Adam Whitman.
June 4th, 2012 at 12:51 PM
it’s in his blood to act that well.
watched “inside the actors” studio last week with the cast of mad men. Peggy wasn’t there (think it was filmed after the previous episode) and now it’s interesting that Jared Harris was there talking about his character knowing he was going to commit suicide.
June 4th, 2012 at 12:53 PM
Probably also some left over guilt with what happened with Adam Whitman.
Definitely.
I think the question next is, does that smarmy asshole Pete try to get made a full partner right away? I can see this happening in the finale.
June 4th, 2012 at 12:54 PM
Does his name stay on the building or has the era of Sterling Cooper Draper Campbell begun?
June 4th, 2012 at 12:54 PM
Are there zombies in this show also?
June 4th, 2012 at 12:55 PM
Are there zombies in this show also?
Lane didn’t come back to life and try to eat Don while he and Roger put his body on the couch after Pete cut him down, so no.
June 4th, 2012 at 12:56 PM
Not Jared Harris’s character’s year: First he’s killed off as David Robert Jones on Fringe and now Lane Pryce on Mad Men. But he was great in both roles.
I also LOVED the scene with Don and the Dow guys.
June 4th, 2012 at 12:56 PM
Does his name stay on the building or has the era of Sterling Cooper Draper Campbell begun?
I think Pete makes this move right away. Joan gets promoted to Lane’s old position as running the entire business side of the firm.

Is Walking Dead coming back in the Summer or Fall?
June 4th, 2012 at 12:57 PM
Candidates to be a headlining partner:
a) Pete Campbell – he’ll push hard for it and deserves it for his very hard work
b) Joan Harris – she’s proven she can handle the money just fine and Lane said so himself
c) Peggy Olsen – she’s inexperienced for something like this, but if they want her back bad enough…
June 4th, 2012 at 12:58 PM
i think there’s going to be a sizable gap between and we may not even see the formal transfer of power to pete and joan or how the firm closes ranks after lane’s death.
June 4th, 2012 at 12:58 PM
I loved the Kenny scene where he says that Pete doesn’t get near this account and he doesn’t want any part of a partnership
June 4th, 2012 at 12:58 PM
It was also nice to see Kenny show that he still holds a grudge against Pete, dating back from the Sterling Cooper days.
June 4th, 2012 at 12:58 PM
October. It’s been rolled out in each of the past two years as part of AMC’s Fear Fest. They film May through November here.
June 4th, 2012 at 12:59 PM
Aw shit, just read the post and haven’t watched it yet.
June 4th, 2012 at 12:59 PM
c) Peggy Olsen – she’s inexperienced for something like this, but if they want her back bad enough…
They gave her a long send-off. The story lines were hinting at her leaving for a place that she’s more appreciated for over a year. I can’t see them reversing course so quickly.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:00 PM
1.) I think Pete finally gets his name on the door.
2.) I wonder how they are going to tie up Pryce’s stake in the company as well as the money he took. Do the remaining partners buy out Pryce’s estate or does Mrs. Pryce become a silent partner? And what about that money? Does Draper tell the other partners what he knows or does he just bust out a check back to the company and keep it to himself?
June 4th, 2012 at 1:00 PM
“Why does everything turn out crappy?”
Glen is the new A.J. Soprano.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:03 PM
I dunno, Glen seems to have his shit more together than that mopey son of a bitch…possible though that the wispy mustache was the first step to having a full blown pube beard as well
June 4th, 2012 at 1:03 PM
Don is handling that.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:03 PM
Matthew Weiner’s son, everybody!
I agree with Sepinwall’s assessment of why Ken didn’t want Pete anywhere near the Dow Chemical account should they land it.
I’m really in denial about how much Pete means to the company and the company’s revenue streams. I hate him so much I don’t want him to be a valuable asset.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:04 PM
Does Draper tell the other partners what he knows or does he just bust out a check back to the company and keep it to himself?
The fact that that is still hanging out there seems like it could be significant. Right now, the only person who alive who knows that Lane embezzled funds from the company is Don. Cooper still believes that Don signed off on a check for Lane and so may not trust Don as much. No idea if Cooper will choose to insinuate something about the check to Lane with Don’s signature and Lane’s suicide. But that story development could put his character, who is otherwise the quietest person this side of Freddy Rumsen, in a unique position.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:04 PM
Glen is the new A.J. Soprano.
I was thinking this too. I swear the writers of the Sopranos just gave up on his character that last season.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:04 PM
Just as lost, just as tubby, and just as physically blank.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:05 PM
I’m really in denial about how much Pete means to the company and the company’s revenue streams. I hate him so much I don’t want him to be a valuable asset.
I thought it was interesting how Don when he went to meet with Roger said that Pete is still thinking way too small. Pete has done a lot, but Don is right, all of his accounts are for small or middling companies. Pete has yet to land a major client by himself.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:05 PM
I could see him doing this. Also, Betty is still a bitch. I lost it when Joan started crying.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:05 PM
breaking bad fans will enjoy this
June 4th, 2012 at 1:06 PM
Love Bert Cooper. His voice and demeanor are awesome. He plays that part very well.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:07 PM
Also, Betty is still a bitch.
She’s not even good at being a bitch though. She tried to be one to Megan over the phone by saying “I guess she just wanted to be with her mother” (not so much the words as her tone when she said them) and Megan didn’t even seem to notice that Betty was trying to be hurtful.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:07 PM
Don won’t tell anyone about this and I don’t even know if the writers even go down this alley. Don isn’t going to disparage a dead man’s name.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:08 PM
cooper is smart, i think he’ll be able to read between the lines. especially if he asks Don, “so, did you talk to Lane about that Check?”. Don’s reaction will tell it all, even if he tries to save Lane’s honor.
but i don’t think he won’t save Lane’s honor for Cooper. I think he’ll tell Cooper if asked, and it won’t go further than that.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:08 PM
Love Bert Cooper. His voice and demeanor are awesome. He plays that part very well.
I love how much of a curmudgeon he is. He is set in his ways and to hell with everyone else. I also think it’s great that he makes people take their shoes off before coming into his office.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:09 PM
Ha. I probably thought she was good at it because that scene hit way too close for home. I have been on the receiving end of a comment like that.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:10 PM
Don won’t tell anyone about this and I don’t even know if the writers even go down this alley. Don isn’t going to disparage a dead man’s name.
I agree that Don wouldn’t disparage a dead man’s name, especially given his own past, but along with the voting on propositioning Joan last week when they knew he was against it, I’m wondering if this is the start of an estrangement between Don and the other partners, especially Pete and Cooper.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:14 PM
part of me thinks this “Renaissance Don” will result in his becoming the driving force of the agency again, the guy everyone wants, and ultimately, he will end up as the most senior partner in the role that Cooper is now.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
Don has shown the middle finger to Roger before, too. Way back when Roger came over to his house for dinner and Don got pissed at his interaction with Betty. There was somethign else, too, but I can’t remember at the moment….
June 4th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
Pete’d have to pay to become a senior partner, no? They’ll let it sit awhile as is (until the old stationairy runs out).
Also, I called that Bert would discover Lane’s nonsense. Cooper lives to double check shit.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:16 PM
Favorite scene was where don, pete, and roger stare at lanes body. All the bravado and bullshit was gone, and they were so reduced.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:17 PM
part of me thinks this “Renaissance Don” will result in his becoming the driving force of the agency again, the guy everyone wants, and ultimately, he will end up as the most senior partner in the role that Cooper is now.
Good point. I think they could take this either way, but what you mention does seem more likely. Roger did say, after all, that he likes this new aggressiveness and ruthlessness that Don is showing.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:20 PM

Also a good point. He and Roger were estranged for about half a season. They reconciled around the same time that Betty started cheating on Don with Henry Francis. But Roger is a fun loving guy and likes that part of Don. Cooper is not so easy going.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:21 PM
that’s a happy ending, which isn’t realistic and i doubt will happen. Don won’t form his own agency, that’s been done. He could be poached, the way Peggy was, but not likely. i don’t see him dwelling as a partner and in charge of only creative for his career.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:22 PM
First off, Bert Cooper’s sister has a share of the company. All the senior partners and Pete (and Joan) could increase their proportional share to absorb Lane’s share. They aren’t into giving away the company.
If/when they land another gorilla, they’d have to have cash for infrastructure and hiring upgrades, so they’d want to be liquid and not overleveraged.
Pete has yet to land a major client by himself.
BULLSHIT. Pete had landed that DoD contractor that was going to be at least greater than/equal to Jaguar, but Defecter Draper fucked that up. Pete did all the legwork while Don was in Palm Springs passing out and crushing ass.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:24 PM

A simple “Incorrect” would have sufficed. But nonetheless you make a good point. I forgot about the North American Aviation fiasco. But you could easily make the argument that among defense contractors, even at that time, North American was not one of the big boys. They were not a Boeing or a McDonell Douglas.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:25 PM
That wasn’t a major client at all. How long would the DoD need advertising? A few months or years? That wasn’t a long term potential client at all.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:25 PM
As he should be. He’s earned it.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:26 PM
Why doesn’t Don try to go after Sandy Hilton again?
June 4th, 2012 at 1:26 PM
Why doesn’t Don try to go after Sandy Hilton again?
You mean Conrad Hilton? I keep waiting for that storyline to come back too.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:27 PM
The fact that Pete listened to the coroner’s instructions that no one touch the body showed he’s still, for the most part, a fearful pussy.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:28 PM
The fact that Pete listened to the coroner’s instructions that no one touch the body showed he’s still, for the most part, a fearful pussy.
Indeed. Just like the sink episode during Pete’s dinner party, Don once again shows him up in the manhood department.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:28 PM
Connie was great. I enjoyed how he specifically sought out Don and it was just the two of them that would meet.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:29 PM
To be fair Pete doesn’t have Don’s experience when it comes to handling corpses and stealing things off of them
June 4th, 2012 at 1:29 PM
Why doesn’t Don try to go after Sandy Hilton again?
/You mean Conrad Hilton? I keep waiting for that storyline to come back too.
I think the lesson there was Hilton comes to you, not vice versa. Plus, the SCDP viability was not a given after American Tobacco bailed. Hilton would have wanted a bigger company. I think it was said they used SCDP a bit too to shake up their current company.
It’s not impossible though.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:30 PM
To be fair Pete doesn’t have Don’s experience when it comes to handling corpses and stealing things off of them
Speaking of Korea, Don’s selling point on napalm was absolutely fantastic.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:31 PM
I’m pretty sure she doesn’t anymore. Her stake was in the original Sterling Cooper that was sold to PPL. I don’t think we’ve ever seen her in a partners meeting at the new SCDP.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
Smooth as silk during that mini-pitch. He was definitely on his game with the Dow folks.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:39 PM
Sandy, Connie, whatever. I remember him giving Don a specific reason why he wasn’t going to give him his business but I don’t remember the reason.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
sportsgal, I’m waiting for your rant about Megan Draper. I generally like her but she was pretty whiny at times last night, and you really seem to dislike her so I assumed you’d be spitting fire.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:45 PM
Oh she annoyed the piss out of me but all the other stuff took my mind off her completely childish behavior.
Bitch, you married a man with children. If one of the kids shows up to the house, call your fucking husband and ask him what’s up instead of throwing a temper tantrum when he gets home you stupid, selfish cunt.
