Heat/Celtics Game 4 on ESPN Got a Higher Rating Than Game 3 of the World Series on Fox
ESPN’s PR team just excitedly released the ratings from Boston’s thrilling game four win over the Miami Heat: a 7.9 overnight, or the best ratings for an NBA playoff game ever on cable. According to the press release, the game hit a 10.7 rating during overtime. Boston won, 93-91 after D Wade’s three-pointer missed.
How big of an audience is that? Well game three of the World Series on Fox – played on Saturday night last October against college football – only generated a 6.6 rating. In case you’d forgotten, St. Louis won that one, 16-7, and Albert Pujols clubbed three home runs.
The only bummer here for the NBA is that should the WCF/ECF both go seven games, the series clinchers would be played on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Interesting that # of viewers was left off the ESPN press release.

That was by far the lowest rated game of that World Series (10.0, 8.7, 8.9, 6.6, 9.2, 8.8, 12.7, 14.7).

I was wondering why there wasn’t a direct Game 4-to-Game 4 comparison but too many people tuned in to the WS to fully work as a post
June 4th, 2012 at 1:19 PM
Hey, just be happy that he mentioned the fact that it was a blowout.
June 4th, 2012 at 1:20 PM
FYI the 10.0 at the beginning is the average for all 7 games.

The NBA has a woody right now, and for good reason. I’m glued to both SAS/OKC and Bos/Mia.

Where’s the post about the NHL playoffs getting higher ratings than the NBA playoffs?

Tis a bummer when I can actually stay up to watch a basketball game that starts after 9 PM

I paused the game to watch GoT. By the time I finished watching the end of the game, I went to bed around midnight and got 5 hours of sleep.

Up at 5am? Damn.

My son is an early riser, and he’s got me conditioned so even when he does sleep “late” like this morning (5:30), I’m just laying in bed waiting for him to get up.
The upside is that I haven’t set an alarm in almost a year.

Look at the top dozen or so MLB teams in average attendance, in a season of 81 home games. (number 12 currently is Minn, at 34k) NBA teams in those cities would be hard-pressed, with bigger arenas, to draw that number for a single game in the regular season.

My girlfriend goes to work an hour before I do and wakes up two hours before I do, so when she wakes up I wake up but then realize I have two more hours and just cuddle with the dog until eight.
Profit.

Well there’s the problem.

Paying customers is a terrible metric tho. How many youtube clips of the Twins have you seen since the season started?

These dick measuring contests that use “ratings” are stupid – from both sides. It doesn’t speak to either the popularity or the quality without some qualifications. Two and a Half Men and that show about the nerds have been the no. 1 rated sitcoms for going on several years. Yet, both those shows suck and I can’t find anyone who’ll admit to watching them.
June 4th, 2012 at 2:17 PM
How gay do you have to be to truly care what rating a sporting event draws? Honestly?

This post is such utter horse shit, Jason. Laughable.
June 4th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
Wow, is that true? Cumulatively NHL has had better ratings than NBA?

This post cracks me up…talk about cherry-picking for desired results. This post means about as much as if I posted that a 2008 episode of SVU drew more viewers than a 2010 episode of CSI.

What I don’t even understand is what this is supposed to mean. So an Eastern Conference Finals game, slotted on a day / time for best ratings results beat a World Series game on a Saturday night vs. football. (Not to mention that it compares cable vs. network TV.)
What in the fuck are we supposed to think of that? Does that mean anything of significance? And how come no we weren’t privy to ratings discussions when news broke that viewership is down double-digits from last year?
If it’s “draw your own conclusions” then mine is that the author of this post is a mouthbreather.
June 4th, 2012 at 3:17 PM
I’d like to point out again that every other game in that World Series had a higher overnight rating than last night’s basketball game.
June 4th, 2012 at 3:21 PM
Why did they play 8 games?
Also, this post is dumb.

I don’t get these “Dump on Baseball” posts. Did a baseball player bully JMac as a kid?

I never knew I was at such odds within myself by attempting to enjoy both basketball and baseball until I started reading this blog. Thank you, heartily, Mr. McIntyre, for opening my eyes to the war that wages within me.
