If Spain do go out I think it’ll be in the group stage, where either fatigue or a slow start could see them dropping points. Past that it’s tough to see any other team except Germany actually taking the game to them and winning; if tiki-taka is good for anything, it’s minimizing the opponent’s opportunities with the ball – and Xaviesta and co. are still peerless at doing that, in spite of what people may think about their sharpness going forward. Their stock has fallen somewhat since Barcelona’s loss to Chelsea, but they went out essentially on the away goals rule, and Messi crashed a penalty off the bar. Spain still has the best talent and their players are great champions – it’ll be great to see whether that’s the decisive advantage over Germany’s strengths, which are youth and an overall team cogency under Joachim Low.

Going to be interesting to see how he handles not being with Villa. Better off playing others ahead of him, he never set the world alight with the national team (though did have key contributions at times but was often a passenger).

Yeah I’m pretty sure most people would actually take that duo over Puyol and Pique right now. Puyol’s pace is horrendous and is the reason they had a down season.

Defender Carles Puyol will miss the tournament as well. Yes, he’s the Barcleona captain and leader etc. More improtantly, he’s an experienced and versatile defender. He has a great partnership with his club partner Pique.
