Incidentally, I met Bob Gibson at a baseball card show when I was 5 and he was one of the nicest players that I ever met. He could not have been different from his persona on the mound.

when i think of seve i think of cleverness around the greens, not so much koufax-like power, though i’m sure he had that as well.

seve was a LONG hitter, think an early incarnation of bubba only WAY better around the greens. both had “natural” mechanics that had a flaw overcome by natural ability. both had short, blindingly successful careers that left everyone wondering “what if?” both were derailed by injury at the end of their careers but could still summon that magic.

ms, bob gibson’s mechanics were wild too (like koufax;s). like folks who smoke all their lives and are as healthy as a horse, never get cancer, some pitchers never suffer from violent or bad mechanics_

Indeed. That’s why I get irritated when people say “Bob Gibson wasn’t a pussy like pitchers today”, well some people are just freaks of nature. Gibson and Ryan are examples.

but there wasn’t so much speicalization back then. you have guys now knowing they can max out for an inning because that’s their role

We talk about the greats who pitched a long time because no one talks about the guy who had a decent season in 1954 but then destroyed his elbow before the advent of Tommy John surgery.

Not really pertinent to your discussion, but pitchers used to pitch to contact rather than going max effort every inning, thus allowing them to pitch more.
