Matt Kemp Re-injured His Hamstring and Then Broke a Bat Over His Knee
Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp came off the disabled list on Tuesday after rehabbing a hamstring injury only to re-injure it in his second game back on Wednesday night. It happened when Kemp slowed up rounding third on an Andre Ethier RBI double and, knowing all too well that his hamstring was re-aggravated, he naturally decided to pull a Bo Jackson and break a bat over his knee.
Just a few days ago I had shared my disappointment that players don’t do that anymore, and poof, Kemp delivered. We should all be grateful.

Dammit Kemp! Don’t hurt yourself!!
And rhetorical question: Who WASN’T a Bo fan?
May 31st, 2012 at 11:53 AM
i think the only person on earth capable of talking about bo jackson without becoming a drooling hyperboler is bo himself.

Ken Caminiti used to break his bat a lot too. It was only years later that we discovered where his strength and energy to do so was coming from.

I find it incredible how easily these guys can snap a baseball bat over their knees.

Brewers win a road series for the first time since early April. Just terrible.

“Ken Caminiti used to break his bat a lot too. It was only years later that we discovered where his strength and energy to do so was coming from.”
MIS- did you see the chron.com ranking of the all time best Astros that was recently posted? They only took into account the time the players actually spent with the Astros, but Morgan Ensberg was a good deal higher than Caminiti, who was way down the list.
I know Caminiti’s best years were arguable in a Padres uniform, but Morgan Freaking Ensberg was a one year wonder. Enos Cabell was a better Astro than Ensberg. Art Howe, Denny Walling – better Astros. Fucking ridiculous.

YARDWORK!
The Cardinals just lost 2 of 3 to a Braves team that had just lost 8 games in a row. Now there’s talk that Jaime Garcia’s elbow is hurt. It’s not Brewer terrible yet, but they’re certainly trending in a bad direction.
May 31st, 2012 at 12:11 PM
1 had to be Bagwell, Biggio 2, then Nolan Ryan 3. I’d love to see the list after that. Where was Mike Scott?

No I missed it. Do you have link? Caminiti’s best years were in San Diego, but I agree that Ensberg has no business being that high. He had one really good season (then flamed out in the playoffs), a couple of really solid seasons, and then not much else.

I think a pitcher debate for best Astros pitcher would be an interesting one. Nolan only played on two really good Astros teams (1980 and 86) and otherwise had a pretty piss poor team behind him the other 7 years he was there. If we’re talking all time great Astros pitchers, Don Sutton should be in the consideration along with Darryl Kile, Shane Reynolds and of course Roy Oswalt.

Thanks Nathan, I’ll check it out right now.

Fitting that he was the fielder closest to Bartman when the Cubbies collapsed. Karma’s gonna get you when you intentionally piss on yourself.
May 31st, 2012 at 12:18 PM
Ok Brad Ausmus is 49, so I know this list is going to be awful. I liked Brad in his time and he was good defensively, but he was an ENORMOUS liability on offense.
May 31st, 2012 at 12:18 PM
Ensberg wasn’t as much higher as I remembered. I guess the outrage made it seem that way.
May 31st, 2012 at 12:18 PM
Hernia, you do a splendid job, but re-aggravated is not a word. It’s redundant.
This is probably my biggest (and most nitpick-y) pet peeve.

I know his career was cut short, but I remember watching JR Richard pitch. He could have been an all timer.

Verlander can pitch…and red sox will still hit endless singles and doubles off him and win. I couldnt believe Nava hit that opposite field double on a 101 MPH Verlander missile

Cesar Cedeno would be no. 1 on my personal all time favorites list. The 5 tool player before it was called that. I would imitate him in little league.

The umps have not been kind to the Tigers this year, but good teams have to overcome that after a while. I’m not too concerned because the season is young and the division is weak. But I hope Fister isn’t out too long and I hope just one guy 5-8 can do something. It’s killing that offense right now.
May 31st, 2012 at 12:27 PM
I’m trying to get my laughing in now before Peavy spontaneously combusts and the rest of the team collapses around that (they are horribly thin and can’t sustain any sort of long-term injury)

In other news, Jamie Moyer was DFA by the Rox. One less old dude to root for.

May 31st, 2012 at 12:28 PM
He sucks. The Tigers need a RF, 2B, another Starter, and about 4 bullpen arms.
May 31st, 2012 at 12:28 PM
“JR Richard pitch. He could have been an all timer.”
My memory is fuzzy, but didn’t he stroke out (thankfully sportsgal wasn’t the Astros’ team doc or he’d have died alone on the field as she ran away) before the 1980 season? The year that Nolan Ryan blew a gift wrapped game to the Phillies in the NLCS?
A Ryan-Richards-Niekro rotation back in the days of 3 starter rotations for the playoffs would have been pretty formidable.
May 31st, 2012 at 12:29 PM
Verlander wasn’t quite on in that game. Curve wasn’t biting and fastball missed a lot. He can’t do it every five days. That’s just not plausible.
May 31st, 2012 at 12:30 PM
I know his career was cut short, but I remember watching JR Richard pitch. He could have been an all timer.
J.R. Richard had a few electrifying seasons, but his career was heading for problems even before he had a stroke. He had experienced ‘dead arm’ a few times previously in his career and had been complaining of it again to the team in the weeks before he suffered the stroke in July 1980. 300+ strikeouts in a season though is pretty eyepopping.
May 31st, 2012 at 12:30 PM
The Cardinals just lost 2 of 3 to a Braves team
I wouldn’t worry too much about this series considering the Braves have take 5 of 6 from the Cards – without a very good explanation why.
I’m glad Medlen coming into the starting rotation for the Braves.

Boesch hasn’t been right since his wrist got all messed up. He was good last year and played with it injured and it dropped his average from like .330ish to .285 before he was shut down.
Also, Raburn, as usual, sucks ass in the season’s first half. I can’t take much more of that guy sucking until the Break and then going all .350 down the stretch.

I’m a damn good piss walker. Most soccer players can’t do that either.
May 31st, 2012 at 12:36 PM
He did the 300 strikeout thing twice.
16 CGs in 1978
19 CGs in 1979
Just unheard of nowadays. Plus, the dude was like 6’8″ and threw 95+.
That 1980 NLCS was an amazing series.
And I prefer the view that the Phillies came back and won….not the “Ryan gift wrap” part. Pete Rose knocking Bruce Bochy out in a collision at the plate in Game 4 was always a favorite memory.
May 31st, 2012 at 12:36 PM
Moises Alou … over-rated whiner.
May 31st, 2012 at 12:39 PM
Quentin sucks too. Castellanos is off limits. Turner is not. I heard some rumors on the radio here that the brewers are ready to start listening on offers for Grienke. Tigers have the pieces to go and get him.

If he didn’t have a stroke, the amount of work he was getting probably would have caused a drop off in his career in the 80s anyway. It’s still tragic that we’ll never know whether he had hit his ceiling yet.
May 31st, 2012 at 12:54 PM
If he’s moved, Grienke will end up in Texas for Profar.
May 31st, 2012 at 12:58 PM
Nolan Ryan had 20+ CG’s 5 times in his career. Jim Palmer 4 times.
I don’t remember what Richard’s mechanics were like, but high innings aren’t always a death knell.

I don’t remember what Richard’s mechanics were like, but high innings aren’t always a death knell.
I’m not saying that they are, but some people have the physical ability to stand up to those innings better than others. Nolan Ryan was a physical freak who, if memory serves, had one of the longest careers of any pitcher ever (27 seasons, even more mindblowing considering he was a power pitcher).
But for every Nolan Ryan, there’s a Sandy Koufax (Ok, I’m going to an extreme there, but you get what I’m saying). And for every Koufax and Ryan there are 10 guys you never heard of because they blew their shoulders out before anyone knew who they were. We talk about the greats who pitched a long time because no one talks about the guy who had a decent season in 1954 but then destroyed his elbow before the advent of Tommy John surgery.
May 31st, 2012 at 1:14 PM
Doubtful the Rangers give up their top prospect for pitching now that they’ve signed Oswalt – unless they have another injury between now and the trade deadline.
May 31st, 2012 at 1:17 PM
ms, bob gibson’s mechanics were wild too (like koufax;s). like folks who smoke all their lives and are as healthy as a horse, never get cancer, some pitchers never suffer from violent or bad mechanics_
May 31st, 2012 at 1:18 PM
Not really pertinent to your discussion, but pitchers used to pitch to contact rather than going max effort every inning, thus allowing them to pitch more.
May 31st, 2012 at 1:19 PM
Awwww, Cats.

but there wasn’t so much speicalization back then. you have guys now knowing they can max out for an inning because that’s their role

May 31st, 2012 at 1:37 PM
in terms of amazing ability but not much longevity?
when i think of seve i think of cleverness around the greens, not so much koufax-like power, though i’m sure he had that as well.
May 31st, 2012 at 1:39 PM
ms, bob gibson’s mechanics were wild too (like koufax;s). like folks who smoke all their lives and are as healthy as a horse, never get cancer, some pitchers never suffer from violent or bad mechanics_
Indeed. That’s why I get irritated when people say “Bob Gibson wasn’t a pussy like pitchers today”, well some people are just freaks of nature. Gibson and Ryan are examples.
May 31st, 2012 at 1:40 PM
seve was a LONG hitter, think an early incarnation of bubba only WAY better around the greens. both had “natural” mechanics that had a flaw overcome by natural ability. both had short, blindingly successful careers that left everyone wondering “what if?” both were derailed by injury at the end of their careers but could still summon that magic.
May 31st, 2012 at 1:42 PM
Quite the opposite, Vez. I thought it was a badass way of the cats controlling the pet population.
you love cats
May 31st, 2012 at 1:42 PM
Incidentally, I met Bob Gibson at a baseball card show when I was 5 and he was one of the nicest players that I ever met. He could not have been different from his persona on the mound.

when i think of seve i think of cleverness around the greens, not so much koufax-like power, though i’m sure he had that as well.
yep, power ain’t shit without control. if koufax/gibson et al walked too many they’d be footnotes not legends
