MLS Had a Rough Night in the U.S. Open Cup
MLS had a rough night last night. The league’s teams faced off against America’s lower divisions in the third-round of the U.S. Open Cup. Not one, not two but seven clubs lost to lower division and amateur sides. A couple more barely held onto leads.
The New England Revolution took a 3-0 lead in extra time against the third-tier Harrisburg City Islanders, then blew the lead and lost on penalties. The LA Galaxy, without Beckham, Keane or Donovan, lost 2-1 to the second-tier Carolina RailHawks. The Chicago Fire lost 3-2 to the fourth-tier (amateur level) Michigan Bucks. The Columbus Crew lost to the third-tier Dayton Dutch Lions. FC Dallas lost 2-0 to the third-tier Charlotte Eagles. Real Salt Lake got thumped 3-1 by second-tier Minnesota Stars FC. The Seattle Sounders and Portland Timbers will try not to add to the casualty list tonight.
MLS clubs simply didn’t care. Why invest in a cup competition when you can conserve strength for a regular season, with parity and more than half the teams making the playoffs, that is virtually meaningless?
It’s an indictment of the league’s depth more than overall quality. The impact with mainstream sports fans should be minimal, as it would require fans knowing the U.S. Open Cup took place.

The MLS season structure is far and away the worst structure in the world of sports.

Guilty. I also did not know that there are 4 tiers of soccer leagues in this country.

MLS fucking sucks and I don’t know why anyone watches. It’s fucking kickball.

It’s fucking kickball.
This could get confusing for Canadian commenters.

I was at that Harrisburg Islanders game. Three goals in nine minutes to tie that up. Entertaining as shit, but horrible soccer.

Soccer-baseball. A meme that may have been missed in our quasi-meme gathering earlier today.

worse than the College Footbal Playoff?!?!?!?

It’s the same in the FA Cup in England. Top teams try to advance without playing their top squads. Most of them do, because of the depth issue you addressed.
I would consider myself a pretty big soccer fan. I had no idea this competition even existed. Are any of these matches on TV?

You are lucky, Ty. The EIC is out today.

Sporting KC was not on radio or TV for this game.

Big deal in Seattle. Have one the last three and and are undefeated since joining MLS

Whoa. Gave up 3 goals in extra time? I need to find an article on this.

NM. It wasn’t added time, but extra time. Still, 6 goals in overtime is a lot in any sport.
