Zach Mettenberger Has Thrown 11 Passes in His College Career, But the LSU QB Made a Top 50 List for the 2013 Draft
Zach Mettenberger is 6-foot-5, has a howitzer in place of his right arm, and despite throwing just 11 passes in his circuitous college career, he’s already been dubbed “Mett-siah” by LSU fans who are giddy that the Jordan Jefferson/Jarrett Lee era has mercilessly come to an end.
That’s enough, apparently, for Mettenberger to be placed on a “Top 50 for the 2013 NFL draft” list by Tony Softli, the former VP of Player Personnel of the St. Louis Rams. Sure, Mettenberger is only the 7th QB on the list – we’ve been saying for awhile how loaded this draft could be at QB, depending on what underclassmen come out – but the fact that he’s on the list is worth mentioning. Not on the list: Geno Smith of West Virginia, who is a fringe Heisman candidate and should put up monster numbers throwing to Tavon Austin.
One area where Softli may not have done his homework – Tyler Wilson (1) vs. Tyler Bray (33). A lot of folks wondered why I had Bray atop my 2013 mock draft and the answer is simple – he’s got two incredible receivers returning (Da Rick Rogers and Justin Hunter, two NFL prospects). Wilson, whom I love, just lost his best two (Wright and Childs) to the Vikings in the NFL draft, but does return Cobi Hamilton. (Also, Knile Davis is back, so the Razorbacks will run more than they did last year.) That’s another reason I didn’t have Landry Jones in the 1st round.

Seems like a real good guy to root for.

lots of first person in that last paragraph. seems the post was more a chance to mention your inexplicable love for bray more than a top 50 list or an LSU rook.
May 29th, 2012 at 12:45 PM
why not? he’s got all the measurables you can want. and if he’s going to be deprogrammed at the NFL level, what does it matter if he’s only thrown 11 passes? he doesn’t have bad habits ingrained like other QB’s.

Don’t NFL scouts know this information though? Won’t they know that certain receivers were drafted, hurt, ineligible, etc.? Seems like your train of thought is better suited for predicting the Heisman winner rather than the higher draft pick.

What? So what you’re saying is Reggie Ball should have been the top QB in 2007′s mock drafts?

I think J-Mac would argue that scouts watch too much tape and he is better suited b/c he just watches 2 or 3 (partial) games and let’s the eye test do the rest.

An NFL scout was just telling me how much a qb’s stock will drop due to his team deciding to run more in hid draft year.

Saw I youtube video of him in Meaux vs. You remember Mo as the LSU soccer chick who had the hard life and banged Jesus for a year? Forth youtube was warning her about Mettenberger’s history of groping women. Sounds like a Raider.

SJ or Miz may be able to confirm this, but I don’t think Bray’s problems lie in his WR’s, it’s the junior high level offensive line that he plays behind.

Arkansas problem last year wasn’t that they didn’t run enough, it was that they didn’t have Knile Davis running the ball.

I understand the reaSEOns TBL does this, but this post is a little ridiculous. Does he really need to re-link the Landry sentence, and then put a Previously? It’s almost as tacky as listing the sports website traffic counter on the home page.

it was that they didn’t have Knile Davis running the ball.

So teams draft the QBs with the best WRs?
I see where you are trying to get with your point, but I assure you teams look beyond stats or the NFL would be filled with June Jones QBs.
May 29th, 2012 at 1:07 PM
I’d be surprised if Tyler Bray ever started a game in the NFL.

This isn’t surprising. What was surprising to me was when pundits were slamming Tannehill during the draft for not having enough starts/playing WR prior to QB.

May 29th, 2012 at 2:04 PM
Nah, I’ve said this on here before, but the offensive line is actually quite talented purely on paper and has actually been very good at pass blocking, but it has been horrendous at run blocking. A lot has to do with the running backs, and a lot of people also think it had to do with the OL coach, who is now gone. We’ll see this year.
That being said, when Bray is healthy and on the field, he hasn’t really had any problems. Kid can play. Now he just needs to do it against the big boys.
May 29th, 2012 at 2:13 PM
Mett has the tools to be a stud. If he’s matured like he’s said to have done, LSU should be the best team in the country.
May 29th, 2012 at 2:16 PM
But he’ll be drafted in the first round.
Too bad it’s not good on the field.

Too bad it’s not good on the field.
UGA and Florida laugh at this statement.
May 29th, 2012 at 2:26 PM
He wasn’t the solution, either. Tenn can’t sling it around 40 times a game and win. They don’t have the OL to do that, even if you think they do. They OL must be able to run block and drive guys off of the ball, and they can’t do that. UF, Bama and UGA will all be able to dictate the line as they match up really well with Tennessee’s OL.
May 29th, 2012 at 2:27 PM
Also…this is not true. The OL makes the RB more often that the other way around. Poole wasn’t nearly as bad as you make him out to be. He wasn’t all that great, but he wasn’t laughably bad, either. UT’s OL just wasn’t that good last year. It could certainly improve this year, but last year it was average on its best day.
May 29th, 2012 at 2:41 PM
He was every bit as bad as I make him out to be. Maybe worse. And that is even with the OL, which was bad at run blocking. He was likely the worst RB UT has ever started in my 20+ year history of watching the team. Honestly. I’ve never seen an RB go down on first contact so consistently. Not even good first contact. He was slow, had no moves, no vision, and went down on contact. He was bad. You’ll see a marked improvement this year, even if the OL doesn’t set the world on fire run blocking.
Anyways, I don’t give a shit about last year. We were god awful and we sucked ass. It’s done. All I know is it sure as shit wasn’t because of Bray. He and a few others were the only guys who had any business being on the field most games. I continue to believe our OL has a lot of talent, and by all accounts we have at least two likely NFL players on that line (James and Richardson). The talent is there.
May 29th, 2012 at 2:42 PM
Dude…come clean with it. He kicked your dog, didn’t he?
May 29th, 2012 at 2:46 PM
Figuratively speaking, yes. I had to watch him fall down after a corner touched his leg after 2 yards for 2 years. He sucked. The OL wasn’t great either, but believe me, he sucked. Somehow he broke a few big runs his Junior year and since we had Matt Simms somehow put up decent numbers, but he was not an actual SEC starting tailback.
May 29th, 2012 at 2:47 PM
And not that you or anyone else cares, but it is hard to say that because he’s a great, great kid. Role model type of college athlete. He just should not have been starting tailback at Tennessee.
May 29th, 2012 at 2:49 PM
Geno Smith will be the 2nd qb taken. The Vols will be lucky to win 6 games. Brey will be the 5th qb taken. Fuck you if you disagree with me.

May 29th, 2012 at 2:58 PM
Dude…some people have him going into the 2012 season as the top pick. I shit you not. It’s as if they’ve never watched a single play of a single game of his.
May 29th, 2012 at 3:01 PM
Not really. I think they’re an 8-4 team. UGA, UF, Bama and SC are all better, but Tenn can beat any of them save for maybe Bama.
Ga State, Akron, Troy, Miss State and Kentucky are locks for wins. They then have NCST (should be a win), at Vandy (should be a win). That puts them at 7 wins with UGA, SC, Bama, UF and Miz left. If they only win 6 with their talent at the offensive skill positions, Doolander should be blacklisted from coaching.
May 29th, 2012 at 3:01 PM

I did that quote thing backwards sorry. Ok probably 7 but Im thinking loss to NC St. I like the wr & qb but I dont like either d or o line at all. Im no Tenn expert though so i am basically talking out my ass here.
May 29th, 2012 at 3:07 PM
If Patterson gets eligible they’ll have the best trio of WRs in the nation…bar freaking none. Like…scary good. Their defense will be interesting to watch as the transition from the 4-3 to the 3-4 is never easy. It’ll take them a year to get used to it. They’ll also need a spaceeating NT, and I don’t know if they have one. Their D was pretty good last year, too. So it’s not out of the question for them to be solid this year, but I’ll have to wait and see. The Florida game will be a fun one to watch as it’s so early in the year.
May 29th, 2012 at 3:09 PM

That is why I say I dont like the D line. The line on both sides looked unglued every 4th Q. USC has the top wideouts not Tenn. Second would be Clemson. All 4(set from usc & clem) will be 1st rd future picks.
May 29th, 2012 at 3:46 PM
I don’t like the D line either. It’s a massive question mark.
The WR’s aren’t. USC’s are good, but ours are better. They are definitely better than Clemson’s.
