I’m sure its the same everywhere… after talking to this guy who really wanted to be a good student but also needed his scholarship to continue to be a student of any kind I realized that the system makes it impossible to be a student. If they’re student first and athlete second then why are they missing a good chunk of class?

Here’s my thing… the whole pay them vs. don’t pay them argument is irrelevant the problem is that that a multi billion dollar sports league does not belong in an educational institution and it is virtually impossible to play big time college sports AND be a student at the same time.

This is like the mafia running a daycare center… of course they can try but its always going to be a horrible idea no matter how well its run.

Husker – I would 100% agree with you, and i have nothing against the UK players or the university. But I find it a bit sloppy and lazy of TBL to basically say “so the school tells us everything’s fine, so everything must be fine.” and then call out people who happen to be a bit more skeptical, especially given PayPal Cal’s track record.

He called out Bobby Knight, who famously stated in a public forum that none of the UK players went to class, for which he then kind of apologized. This is not a skeptic, but a bitter old man.

This shit is real, and it happens a lot with athletics. The coaches steer players towards majors that won’t conflict with practice. I hope it doesn’t happen at UGA, but I suspect it does.

And it doesn’t have to be a big-time college program either. I went to a DIII school, and there were a lot of majors that you flat out couldn’t do if you wanted to play a sport. The biggest conflicts were Athletic Training and Physical Therapy.

I wanted UK to win this year (once Duke was eliminated from contention, AKA “the first day of the season”) because they actually play good basketball, as opposed to 99% of college basketball teams.

That’s why I loved this year’s team. They played great basketball on both ends of the floor. So much fun to watch in an otherwise boring year.

That’s funny. Not being a CBB fan, for some reason I find myself pulling for Cal just because it seems to piss off the rest of the country so much.

Also, spare me the “I played a real sport like baseball crap.” Baseball is the laziest sport in the god damn world.

Another thing I found interesting was how much class these kids miss on road games or tournaments. I mean there is no make up class and usually not much tutoring. So they have absolutely no idea what happened in class while they were on the road. How do you make a good GPA if you’re missing class every other week for road games and stuff?
