Some People Still Hate Mike Vick
Mike Vick did 23 months in a federal prison after he plead guilty to a felony charge of dog fighting. He was released on July 20, 2009. It’s almost been three years since his release. The Eagles’ QB remains a lightning rod:
An act of goodwill has enraged Findlay Toyota’s Facebook audience to a point where the car dealership’s marketing department shut down its promotional page. The target of the backlash is Philadelphia Eagle Michael Vick, who met with fans Friday night at the Henderson dealership.
Commenters on Findlay Toyota’s Facebook page called Vick a “dog killer” and threatened to beat him up. Others posted that they planned to boycott the car dealership for sponsoring Vick for promotional and charity events, including a May 29 youth football clinic at the Henderson International School.
In response, the dealership began deleting comments and ultimately shut down the page Friday night.
“We’re just trying to do something right for the kids and people just forget about that,” said Stephanie Bernas, marketing manager and social media director for Findlay Toyota.
My first thought: That many people “like” a car dealership on their Facebook page? Why? Who are these people? I guess the types who stage – or threaten to stage – boycotts. [Las Vegas Sun]

I guess people really love their dogs. I think that Vick will start 12 games this year.

One, he’s done his time. How much longer does he have to be punished by segments of the public?
Two, he’s gotta realize some folk will never forget. Pick events where the crowd will be more supportive. Maybe Philly, maybe not Vegas anymore.
Three, it takes a lot of effort for those folk to hold on to the hate. “Let it go.” There are bigger concerns in society.

dog killers and child rapists should never be forgiven

Uh, two different issues. And, you probably know or know of someone who has killed a dog.
Would you hold the same view if a friend in a car ran over a stray? Dead is dead. Dogfighting is still going on in this country. Where’s the rest of the outrage?

If I had to choose between my murdered dog and being raped in my childhood I would probably buy a new dog.

Forgive me for my rant on this. It just cracks me up that people get outraged as if Vick invented dogfighting. Didn’t start with him, didn’t end with him.
For the dog lovers out there (and I am one), the same outrage directed at Vick ought to be directed at every person who trains dogs to fight, just as consistently.

The possible lesson here: kill a human and you won’t face endless wrath.

Sad, but proven true time and again. That saddens me.

How pathetic it is to see our gutless, politically correct media reduce the reality of Vick’s crimes to “dog fighting” when we know that he also drowned, electrocuted and fatally body slammed innocent, defenseless dogs whose only crime was their inability to win the fights in which he forced them to participate.
Actions speak, and Vick’s revealed him for the scum of the earth sub-human that he is. The fact that he also happens to play a stupid game well is utterly irrelevant to the reality of what he did and what he is, and no amount of spin on his or the media’s part will EVER remove that stench.
Before you join in celebration of Vick’s next touchdown pass, stop and consider the pain and the fear that he saw in those dogs’ eyes…before he remorselessly proceeded to kill them anyway.
Vick is a stain on our society, and Some Random Old Dude, your comments lead me to believe that you’re little better.

When China completes its purchase of Murica, there’ll be stores with “doggie snacks” on every corner.

Your comments led me to believe you’re a self-righteous, ignorant ass who isn’t intelligent enough to understand the concepts of serving your time, rehabilitation, forgiveness, and turning over a new leaf.

Well you picked a hell of a day to fire shots at SROD.

As if I concern myself with your lame name-calling, A.P.
I didn’t callously watch as electrocuted dogs writhed and twitched in terror and pain. Vick did. I didn’t remorselessly watch as drowning, dying dogs fought for just one more breath of air. Vick did. I didn’t pick up a cowering dog, raise it over my head and SLAM it the earth simply because it couldn’t measure up to my standard of viciousness. Vick did.
The fact that Vick spent some time behind bars means nothing to me, nor does your suggestion that his served sentence has somehow “paid” for his crimes. Some actions are so vile and so cruel as to pervert and forfeit good-hearted notions of rehabilitation and forgiveness, and for me, Vick’s are among them. He can talk all he wants about what a changed man he is, but that’s not necessary. It’s actions, not words, that count, and Vick’s showed us what he really is. The rest is just conversation and damage control.

How so? Did you actually read my comments?

In case you didn’t, allow me to sum up:
Vick isn’t the only one to commit this heinous crime. There’s probably someone in your city/state/province who is doing similar. The outrage should be consistent in every case like this, not just Vick.
My second point was, there are humans getting abused with alarming regularity in this world, especially small defenseless children. Read any big city paper (like the Denver Post). There are several court trials per year regarding some small child killed by a careless or malicious parent or caretaker. Where is the widespread outrage in those cases?
I love dogs. I love humans also, probably moreso.
My intended conclusion is this: the outrage should be directed at every person who commits such evil against human or animal. But, in our society it isn’t. You gnash your teeth and rail at Vick, but he isn’t the only one.

Vick’s actions were terrible and I will never celebrate him or his success. I will agree with SROD though in that I think all people who do things like this should get the same punishment. I think that we need to stop forgiving athletes as quickly as we seem to do vs someone who isn’t as good at throwing a football.
