Safeco Field Moving in the Fences?
The Mets moved in the outfield fences at Citi Field, and the Tigers did the same at Comerica Park in 2003, and it sounds like the Mariners will finally be doing the same at Safeco Field. Here’s Mariners manager Eric Wedge talking to the Seattle Times:
“Like I’ve always said, Jack (Zduriencik) and I talk every day. Jack talks to the powers that be on a daily basis. When the season’s all said and done, we’re going to evaluate everything. I mean, everything. Both on and off the field, both in regard to the field or anything else regarding that. I’ll leave it at that.
“The longer I’m here — nothing’s going to happen this season, that’s obvious — but it does allow me to give it another four months to take a peek at it, too. I have my thoughts, of which I will not let you in on. Safe to say we will evaluate everything when the season’s done.”
“What we don’t want it to be is a crutch. There’s no excuses here. These players are young enough, and I think they’re tough enough, they can handle anything that comes their way. Having said that, they’re human. Whether it be a ball you hit right on the screws you line out to the third baseman, or one you hit you feel it’s gone and they grab it, you’re going to have human moments. I accept that.”
Have the offensive numbers changed at Citi Field? According to ESPN’s Park Factors, it was 24th in baseball in runs last year (.908). Safeco was 26th (.855). This year, Citi Field has actually dropped to 30th (.649) and Safeco remains 26th (.801).
Mariners fans and reporters seem to think a change could attract free agents, but you know what free agents like more? Money and winning. The Mariners haven’t been to the postseason since 2001 and have had as many 100-loss seasons (2) in the last five years as winning seasons.

Someone in the Beadle post said Runaway Jury is a great movie. There are some real Munsons around here.

i love comparing full season stats to 1/3 season stats to draw conclusions.
that’s like reading the first paragraph of this article and saying it’s great before you finish and realize how half assed it was.

i’m just surprised TBL didn’t punch out already today.
Sounds like Gannet has a vacation schedule like everyone else.

Mets have had 21 home games so far. So actually only about 1/4
May 25th, 2012 at 3:04 PM
So you move in the fence and draw more free agent hitters while driving away free agent pitchers?
May 25th, 2012 at 3:05 PM
Well, it’s hard to do a full season comparison, since, you know, we’re only a third of the way through the season. As is, it’s nice to see what the results are SO FAR, and will be interesting to compare after the season ends. The Mariner’s need to face the reality of that their players just suck at the plate, and giving them another 2 home runs each isn’t going to do a thing to help out the team.

Mets have hit “new dimension” 4 HR’s; Opponents have hit 7

The other day I emailed TBL to ask him when he would be writing a post on how great baseball has been this year. Something tells me that won’t be happening. I happen to really be enjoying the first 2 months. Nice to see teams like O’s, Nats, and Indians doing so well.

I was wondering about this, do the visitors get the old fence when their up, otherwise how does it help that shitshow of a lineup
May 25th, 2012 at 3:12 PM
Didn’t the Tigers move in the fences at Comerica to make Juan Gonazalez consider resigning with them, then they offered him an absurd contract which he turned down?
May 25th, 2012 at 3:13 PM
Mariners have what… two, maybe three, front of the rotation starters on the verge of hitting the majors? Maybe you see how that plays out before you start messing with your ballpark.
May 25th, 2012 at 3:14 PM
because yoko ono kept trying to barge into beadle’s picture.
May 25th, 2012 at 3:14 PM
One of the main reasons the Mets decided to movie in the fences (and lowering the left field fence) was to ease David Wright’s mind and give him renewed confidence. That, has seemed to have worked. He’s batting .405 for the season with 5 HR’s. (#5 was last night… a “new dimension” HR)
May 25th, 2012 at 3:16 PM
A couple obvious reasons why scoring is down in Citi:
1) Ike Davis
2) No Jose Reyes
3) Mets starting pitching has actually been pretty decent

Yep, and I’m a Mets fan. I sometimes wonder if I’m part of the same species which calls up a radio show to announce that the Mets will ‘rule’ New York because they are at 22-20 and on their way up, and the Yanks suck at 21-21 and on their way down.
/talk radio will rot your brain, son.

Mets have some great pitching prospects in the minor leagues. Next year, the Mets could look a lot like the Washington Nationals have looked so far this year.
Personally… the way the last 4/5 years have gone. As long as the Mets are ahead of the Phillies… I’m happy.
May 25th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
This is wildly optimistic.
May 25th, 2012 at 3:38 PM
Mets don’t have two of the best prospects in the past twenty years coming up through their system anytime soon…
May 25th, 2012 at 3:47 PM
Their young hitters (currently in MLB) will continue to get better. They have 2-3 front line pitchers in AA/AAA that will be ready by next year.
May 25th, 2012 at 3:50 PM
And why is it “wildly optimistic” to say a team could look like the Nationals? The Nationals! I’m not crowning them World Champs or anything. Nats might win the division but come on, that’s not that far fetched.
May 25th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
Did the Dodgers and O’s also have the “best prospects in 20 years”?
Record on May 25, 2011
Dodgers – 22-28 (today; 30-14)
Orioles – 22-24 (today: 28-17)

May 25th, 2012 at 4:07 PM
Strasburg >>>>> Wheeler & Harvey
May 25th, 2012 at 4:32 PM
I mean, the young core on the Nationals — just in MLB — Strasburg, Zimmerman, Gio, Harper… it will take the Mets years to build something like that. Sorry.
May 25th, 2012 at 4:36 PM
It’s really unfair that opposing teams don’t also have to hit in Safeco Field.
May 25th, 2012 at 5:17 PM
The runs scored in Seattle has had much more to do, recently, with one simple fact. The M’s can’t hit. Can’t hit for average. Can’t hit for power. Can’t get on base. Saunders. Ryan. Figgins. There’s your freaking answer.
