huge huge HUGE fan of olivia munn. she can get every which way
May 25th, 2012 at 8:07 AM
Great Gatsby looks pretty great.
Saw this yesterday and am on the fence about it. It looks as though they might be just honing in on the love story here and ignoring the other major point in the book about class disparity.

Is Leonardo Dicaprio the most dominant guy on the planet? He makes sick movies, he bangs supermodels, and he can buy anything he wants.

Maybe it’s because I never read the book but that Gatsby trailer bored the shit out of me. WAY too stylized and over filtered. It’s like they took the costumes from Boardwalk Empire, threw in some Dick Tracy lighting, and then mailed everything else in.

May do 830 sometimes, but the goal is 9.

Anyone else think Leo needs to fun it up with some comedy? I enjoy his movies, but would love to see him go out of character. Or at least play a straight up bad buy. He plays a lot of antiheroes.

May 25th, 2012 at 8:20 AM
Baz Luhrmann did Great Gatsby. So I expect some Simpsons-esque Monorail song/dance sequences. I suspect it’ll be a critical darling but will be a little pompous and overrated.
Leo will be in Django Unchained too.
May 25th, 2012 at 8:23 AM
awful idea.
May 25th, 2012 at 8:24 AM
And to think he started on Growing Pains??? This guy can do no wrong. Plus, to grab Rafael-Barr? His top 5 in movies:
1. Departed
2. Gangs of New York
3. Inception
4. Catch Me if You Can
5. Aviator

ignorantly hilarious. I remember learning how IPO’s worked about two years ago in my Finance class and explaining it to my wife and in-laws a week or so later. the key to making money through IPO’s is having money and knowing people…and having money helps you know people.

I fucking love Ukraine. They have a Ukrainian fest here that closes down the city’s second biggest street. Old Ukrainian women install kitchens on Bloor street and cook Pericles all day. Vodka tents are full at 11:00 am. The women are all gorgeous and they drunkenly polka dance all weekend and it gets rowdy. The Ukrainian beer Slavutich is top notch. You should be writing this down.
May 25th, 2012 at 8:28 AM
I loves The Great Gatsby. Leo is going to have another big year. 8 minutes of Djano Unchained was shown at Cannes and people were raving about it.

One of the worst baseball articles I’ve read in a while. Take away that idiots keyboard. About counter-points I’d love to make. But we’ll start with he doesnt even mention Matt Weiters and Carlos Santana exist. Or that Bryce Harper was a coverted catcher. Retarded.

May 25th, 2012 at 8:33 AM
The fuck is Pericles?
Romeo and Juliet was great
Moulin Rogue I could not get through
Australia was visually stunning but cheesy and annoying
I am wary about getting excited for this movie. I am going to be dragged opening night and it’s either going to great or a disaster.
May 25th, 2012 at 8:33 AM
Seriously, I watched that on Hulu while at work one day and it disturbed me for the rest of the day. I couldn’t concentrate, fock.

The Aviator – he owned that movie. Dominated the role of a really tough character to have weight but not overplay. After seeing this movie I went on a Howard Hughes spree. Read a # of bios on him. Iconoclast.
The Departed – Nice to see grit in a modern role
Inception – held everything together
Catch Me If You Can – underrated popcorn movie
May 25th, 2012 at 8:37 AM
It’ll get political. The idea of a broken IPO system that only rewards those with access and power (i.e the rich) is bound to go down that road.
May 25th, 2012 at 8:38 AM
that isn’t the scene I am talking about, but you are correct about Bruno Kirby wanting some dick. I am talking about the scene in the bathroom stall when he is dope sick and hard up for cash. realistically, it would have been the other way around.

STOP STEALING MY MONEY! STOP STEALING MY MONEY! STOP STEALING MY MONEY!
May 25th, 2012 at 8:39 AM
Gangs of New York. Overacting everywhere, terrible CGI and Scorcese mailed it in. Sad but true.
May 25th, 2012 at 8:39 AM
The Beach and Revolutionary Road are underrated DiCaprio acting showcases. The Beach, like every Danny Boyle movie, falls apart in the third act, and Revolutionary Road ended up being a bit disappointed for the talent involved (DiCaprio, Winslet, Shannon, Mendes), but he was great in both. Titanic is an easy punchline but I’m surprised it doesn’t get more credit around here.
May 25th, 2012 at 8:40 AM
bears repeating.
May 25th, 2012 at 8:40 AM
the problem was no one was on the same level as Daniel Day Lewis and they all tried too hard to get there.
outside of DDD, the film was wildly overrated b/c of the violence and Scorcese’s name attached to it.
May 25th, 2012 at 8:41 AM
I remember reading Great Gatsby in high school. granted I probably didn’t really care, and I probably didn’t understand what was going on. but I remember it being fucking awful.
May 25th, 2012 at 8:41 AM
aside from the kate winslet nudity, visuals and special effects around the ship, the movie was terrible.
May 25th, 2012 at 8:42 AM
It’s true, though. The insiders/founders DID bag the biggest percentage of the value. But you would expect that.
If you buy the stock (any stock for that matter), you’re hoping to make 5-7% per year forever.
You would command/expect a MUCH higher return if you were starting a company from scratch. For every company that makes it to IPO, 999 others fail.
May 25th, 2012 at 8:43 AM
Trainspotting and Slumdog didnt fall apart in the 3rd Act.
May 25th, 2012 at 8:43 AM
I would have started with Cameron Diaz being the love interest, but your point is equally valid.
May 25th, 2012 at 8:44 AM
It wasn’t terrible. It shouldn’t have won the Oscar (that belonged to LA Confidential by a country mile) but it was a very good, entertaining film that became fashionable to bash once it made a kajillion dollars.
May 25th, 2012 at 8:44 AM

i’ll be listening to Ray Charles version of America the Beautiful several times today. best version out there.
May 25th, 2012 at 8:44 AM
the IPO system is only “broken” based on your personal philosophy. I’d say it works exactly as its supposed to: early investors (through both sweat equity and monetary equity) have a chance to see their investment truly monetized and choose to cash out or stay in.
May 25th, 2012 at 8:45 AM
The Quick in the Dead was one of his better movies.
May 25th, 2012 at 8:45 AM
I can’t explain why, but I hated the book. Hated it.
May 25th, 2012 at 8:46 AM
Slumdog fell apart from the opening second. Awful movie. Maybe the worst BP winner ever (although Crash is still the leader in the clubhouse). Trainspotting was good. But he wasn’t really “Danny Boyle” then.
Sunshine, 28 Days Later, The Beach, 127 Hours – all cliffdived after the halfway point.
May 25th, 2012 at 8:46 AM
I read it in my early 30′s, understood everything going on, and thought the book was shit.
May 25th, 2012 at 8:46 AM
Not a good day to be working for Curt Schilling
May 25th, 2012 at 8:46 AM
I wouldn’t make fun of Titanic at all. Dialogue is wooden but you go in to watch a huge ship sink. Epics are ridiculously hard to get made, and then to pull off. Landmark film. It also changed the theatre industry as well. Haters gonna hate.
May 25th, 2012 at 8:46 AM
oh, I completely agree it’s true. mayhaps I should have copied/pasted more from that writer’s rant against IPO’s. he was calling that “broken” and “unfair.” I called his opinion ignorantly hilarious.
May 25th, 2012 at 8:46 AM
Blood Diamond should be #1 on the Leo list. Not even having in the top 5 is ludicrous.

/not as great a heist film as The Dark Knight
May 25th, 2012 at 8:57 AM
I know I had to read it in high school but its left no lasting impression on me. Just don’t remember it. The only book I can remember that I was forced to read and actually liked it was Frankenstein. It was not at all what I expected.
May 25th, 2012 at 8:57 AM
Trainspotting was good. But he wasn’t really “Danny Boyle” then.
I’d argue that perhaps that movie is “Danny Boyle but he supresses his instincts elsewhere. The issue is that his source material is often a winding narrative and it seems he chooses to let it go that way (often the fastest way to a 3rd act fallout). Slumbdog was non-linear but actually had a proper three-act narrative.
May 25th, 2012 at 8:57 AM
I wonder if anyone would like it or buy it. Clooney can be funny in one flick and serious in another. But I’m not sure Leo can pull it off and have people buy it. I couldn’t imagine Leo being in any of the “Oceans” movies, for example.
May 25th, 2012 at 8:58 AM
Not sure if you were going memey, but Inception actually is a heist film.
May 25th, 2012 at 8:58 AM
oh now this is just fucking phenomenal.
May 25th, 2012 at 8:58 AM
I hate that “No Church in the Wild” was the first song played during that trailer. Not that I don’t like the song or think the movie will be any good, but the first thing I thought about when I heard the song in the trailer was “Safe House” w/ Denzel. Used the same song…
May 25th, 2012 at 8:59 AM
Leo would be great in a comedy but he’d likely a foil to work against.
May 25th, 2012 at 9:00 AM
It was also terrible. There’s that.
I take your point.
May 25th, 2012 at 9:00 AM
Inception is somewhere in my top 20 movies of all time.
May 25th, 2012 at 9:02 AM
How about one of the FB founders giving up his American citizenship just before the IPO so that he could save about $67 mil in taxes? Nothing illegal about that, but don’t feed me bullshit about how this was planned way in advance.
well, he wasn’t born here, only moved here and got citizenship under asylum because he was the target of ransom kidnappings, doesn’t live here, and will ultimately end up with a bigger tax bill than what he avoided. but stick to the narrative.
May 25th, 2012 at 9:03 AM
yeah, i was going memey with the dark knight reference.
inception is to heist films as blade runner is to noir films.
May 25th, 2012 at 9:04 AM
done.
May 25th, 2012 at 9:04 AM
I doubt I could name a top 5. I watch a movie and pretty much have forgotten most of what happened a week later. I can remember if I enjoyed it but thats about it. Thats why I am always impressed with you guys for the ability to throw out movie quotes as if you just watched the movie.
May 25th, 2012 at 9:06 AM
Wonder if TVF can finally capitalize on this and cannibalize some readers. Very frequently commenters spend a few hours in the Roundup. Seems to me that if TVF offers a good Roundup an hour easier than TBL, then readers would likely go and stay at TVF for most of the mornng.

May 25th, 2012 at 9:07 AM
Naming a top 5 is hard because it changes a lot for me.

Well, ain’t this place a geographical oddity. Two weeks from everywhere.
May 25th, 2012 at 9:20 AM
Uusually I can tell by how long I am turning a film over in my mind after seeing it. If I am still picking scenes or characters apart 5-7 days after seeing it, it gets moved up the ladder. But a great one has to hold up to time and repeat viewings.
May 25th, 2012 at 9:20 AM
i’ve been drinking mostly IPA’s lately, with some lagers mixed in.
i’d recommend Rogue Dead Guy Ale, Stone IPA, Ruination IPA, Arrogant Bastard, Sam Latitude 48 IPA, Smuttynose Isle of Shoals IPA. Flying Dog’s Raging Bitch.
for something different check out Flying Dog’s Gonzo Imperial Porter. On some hot days i love a nice dark beer. one of the best imported German darks that’s readily available is Warsteiner Premium Dunkel. The have a pilsner type as well that is recommended on hot summer days.

Clint Mansell is fucking awesome. Just. Fucking. Awesome.
I always go back and forth on my favorite John Murphy score – Sunshine or In the House in a Heartbeat. One is epic, one is incredibly terrifying.
May 25th, 2012 at 9:21 AM
I read the book The Beach before the movie came out and about an hour into the movie I was really having a good time. Right up until he bonked the French chick in the ocean and inserted a love triangle. Awesome soundtrack, though. And the video game sequence cracks me up every time.

I am on a huge Dale’s Pale Ale kick right now. Don’t know why, but every time I walk into the store even with the intent to get something else, I end up getting a six pack of Dale’s.
May 25th, 2012 at 9:25 AM
I like everything. I’m pretty partial to the big west coast IPA’s and love imperial Porters. Not a big Lager fan.
Green Flash Palate Wrecker, Hope Head Red, and West Coast IPA are pretty awesome. Dale’s Pale Ale (not West Coast, but pretty good). Ballast Point Imperial Porter, Rogue Imperial Porter are 2 pretty good ones.
May 25th, 2012 at 9:25 AM
Yesterday could’ve been the day I broke 80 the first time. It was 745, the sun was going down, and I was sitting on the 16 tee after making birdie. I had caught up to three foursomes, two of which had women, and all of which were slow playing. It would’ve taken another hour to finish those three holes, waiting about 5-7 minutes to play each shot. That’s not golf.
I walked away. I wrote down bogeys for my last three holes and totaled an 80.
I’m not unhappy about having to give up that round, either.

This.
Highland’s Oatmeal Porter and Sweetwater’s Exodous Porter, fine selections.
May 25th, 2012 at 9:26 AM
Love most of what Leo does. Loved the book. This movie looks like an over-stylized turd. Only way it could look worse is if Burton/Depp got a hold of it. But it will be deemed the best Gastby movie because the 70s version was so very bad.
May 25th, 2012 at 9:26 AM
I don’t think anything will ever top the Gattaca score for me, personally. But Clint Mansell is a bad dude.
May 25th, 2012 at 9:26 AM
I don’t know, i liked it, but the story would have been about as gripping as “Solaris” had they not added in the visitor to push it along.
the end is still mindboggling to me, the thought of actually watching fission happen inside the sun.

Speaking DiCaprio:
Although Bar Refaeli is drop dead gorgeous, the model claims she has been unlucky in love since splitting with Leonardo DiCaprio in May 2011. During an appearance on Conan, the Israeli-born model – who topped Maxim’s Hot 100 list earlier this week – says men don’t flirt with her.

It’s a fantastically atmospheric film with some incredible scenes – the two you mentioned, the Mercury fly-by, the bomb going into the sun – and it actually showed Captain America can act. I was just disappointed by the way it transitioned into “ordinary sci-fi” in the third act, and with how Boyle chose to film it. I own it on BD and still watch it here and there.

A close friend of mine passed away not long ago and his brother was having a party prior to the funeral as a celebration of his life. Everyone was bringing beer/liquor over and another friend brings Dead Guy Ale not even thinking about. He is drinking the beer and talking to my friends Mom and you could see the moment she saw what he was drinking. Thank goodness we all had a good laugh over it, as my friend would have got a kick out of it as well.
May 25th, 2012 at 9:39 AM
Ugh, that sucks. The two rounds I’ve had that were on pace for sub-80 included a triple bogey on 16 and I ended right at 80 each time. Sounds like you’ll get there soon though.

The Untouchables, Star Wars, Batman Begins, Crouching Dragon Hidden Tiger, Hoosiers, The Natural, The Aviator, The Sting

Baz Luhrmann, ladies and gentlemen. Still haven’t forgiven my wife for dragging me to Moulin Rouge years ago. Nor Baz for that matter.

The problem with IPO’s is that the ignorant retail investor thinks they only go up and are a sure thing. By nature, they are speculative investments and folks need to understand what they are buying.
May 25th, 2012 at 9:47 AM
Nicely done.
May 25th, 2012 at 9:48 AM
The Dark Knight, There Will Be Blood, Inception, The Social Network, Indiana Jones, LA Confidential,
I’d agree on all those. I have TSN and am still mulling it over. TDK I lump in with Batman Begins but year. Forgot about the Indy movies, I’d lump them in as one too. I liked the fit of TWBB, but I guess it was alot of his throwaway material, so that grates me a tiny bit. The oil derrick bit was really great.
My favotire two pieces recently are “Time”, the prologue to Inception and “Icarus” by Howard Shore – the song from the test plane crash scene in The Aviator.

May 25th, 2012 at 9:49 AM
elfman “borrows” quite a bit…it’s really disturbing to hear themes from shostakovich or mahler. which is funny when he says other film composers rip him off…
but it’s ok to rip off composers as long as it’s been 50+ years?

1) Smashing Pumpkins – The Beginning Is The End Is The Beginning – Watchmen
2) Muse – Take a Bow – Watchmen
3) ELO – Mr. Blue Sky – Eternal Sunshine
4) NIN – Just Like You Imagined – 300 (WORST MOVIE EVER)

May 25th, 2012 at 9:54 AM

The main theme from the movie Friday Night Lights was really well done. An ancillary piece of it was used in the trailer for “Detachment”.
Moby’s “God Moving Over the Face of the Waters” at the conclusion of Heat was a masterstroke. Perfect ending to one of the modern epics. That score was perfect for the movie, but none a score I’d listen to independently.
May 25th, 2012 at 10:00 AM

All the Tarantino soundtracks are wonderful. A few misses but tons of Choo-off-Verlander 450-foot moon shots.
Kill Bill 2 had “The Chase”, & “Malagueña Salerosa”. Vol 1 had “Battle Without Honor or Humanity” & “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” by Santa Esmeralda – the 10-minute version.
Tarantino unseated Scorcese as best use of rock in films. Plus he unearths rarities while Scorcese has had a better budget and relationships to use the Stones and Clapton repeatedly.
May 25th, 2012 at 10:05 AM
The whole thing is just fantastic. I remember seeing the movie and then immediately running out to buy the CD.
May 25th, 2012 at 10:05 AM
Like I said, had Scorcese done Schindler’s List as he was originally slated to do, I wish he would have used Gimme Shelter when Fiennes is capping Jews from the balcony.
Inglorious Bastards’ was great. Cat People is one of Bowie’s best songs.

Taking the weekend off but I have a few outings in June so I’ll be dialing up the game next week with golf THUR-FRI-SAT.

Yeh, both courses. I was a straight up hacker back then too.. like I probably would have shot over 125 had I not picked up once I got to double par. Gulp
Never golfed as a kid b/c I hated how my pops would be “too tired” to throw the ball around the yard after a round and didn’t understand how you could be beat after golfing. Now I understand. So played a little a # of yrs back but Dad started me off golfing righty since there weren’t many lefties on the tour and he thought getting clubs etc would be easier. Switched 3 yrs ago and am starting to shoot in the 90s consistently. A little sticky icky seems to lubricate my swing which is nice LOL. Also great excuse to get out with my Dad. I realize as you get older you want to soak up every moment possible before they move on
May 25th, 2012 at 11:16 AM

May 25th, 2012 at 11:31 AM
I think one mini bucket and one good round off the tee… a little arrogance on the tee would help me. My good drives were all within feet of my target so I know my form is there. All the nonsense happened in the first 10 holes.

Funny that your ignorant yankee ass doesn’t know what the word means: you all. Therefore, it’s y’all not ya’ll. Unless you go with the’yre, which come to think of what passes for publishable work on this site, is probably just your speed.

It wasn’t terrible. It shouldn’t have won the Oscar (that belonged to LA Confidential by a country mile) but it was a very good, entertaining film that became fashionable to bash once it made a kajillion dollars.

Fuck off BBall Diaries is all time classic. Watch that fucker again and see the reality/genius of it. Well it is for those of us who plowed head first into the heroin boom in Newark in the early to mid 90′s. There was nothing in this world like going into newark housing projects or back streets copping a couple bricks late at night. you want total ecstasy try it. every emotion you can think of happens in the 5 minutes it takes to get out of the car get up the stairwell and find the dope and get the hell out of there. im sorry but even having my 1st kid didnt give me as much thrill. And thats the issue with drugs. most think how the fuck can that be possible. well it is. mind hosed by dope. im still kickin though. have a great memorial day weekend.
