Justin Verlander Was Not a Happy Camper Following a Complete Game Loss
Justin Verlander pitched another tremendous game Thursday afternoon, going the distance in a 2-1 loss to the streaking — did someone say streaking? — Cleveland Indians. He allowed six hits, two runs, one of which came on an absolute bomb off the bat of Shin-Soo Choo, and struck out seven while walking one. Sadly, all the Tigers could come up with for their ace was an RBI groundout from Miggy Cabrera. After the game, Verlander vented a little understandable frustration:
“You can only say it’s early for so long. We’ve got to get it turned around. It’s disappointing the way we’ve been playing. Obviously, we all expected better.’”
To be fair, in baseball you can say it’s early for quite some time. Here’s Verlander on throwing a 102 mph fastball on his 116th pitch:
”I wasn’t trying to send a message. I was trying to light a spark. I thought if I could dominate an inning and get our guys back in quick, maybe something would happen.”
How can you not love this guy? And he can really say he wants, hell, Verlander can turn into Dennis Rodman if he wants to considering the guy has pitched at least six innings in 52 straight starts. Ridiculous. That’s the longest streak in the majors since Steve Carlton did so for 69 consecutive starts from Sept. 13, 1979 to April 13, 1982.
The loss marked the Tigers’ sixth over their last eight, and the sweep at the hands of the Indians included 30 stranded runners and a sizzling 3-for-28 with runners in scoring position. Sounds like a party.

Wow. Baseball guys, that’s seriously rare, no?

that’s pooholesian numbers.

verlander was hitting triple digits against the last batter when he threw his first no hitter.
rare in baseball, but not for him.
almost seems like he could throw 130mph if he needed to.

Those of us that follow the Tigers and JV have come to expect it, but yes it’s fucking unreal.

SROD, if you’re out there, this is pretty awesome.

roll tribe.

Crazy that he can still throw that kind of heat late in the game.

Verlander is a freak. He’s HOF good. The Indians have now beaten Felix Hernandez in 2 starts and Verlander. I’m enjoying it while things are going our way.
That top of the Tigers lineup is scary though. Jackson was out this series. But I think they didnt really consier Avila and Peralta’s certain 2012 regression, which is biting them.

JV is just a total stud. The guy is amazing, I love watching him pitch. If only he could play in the field and be this good. No one is better on the mound right now, hands down.

For those asking, this is Yardwork, not the previous post.

Boesch has been no treat, and Raburn has been pathetic. No hitting from the 2B slot either.

I actually feel sorry for the dude. First time in a while the D didn’t have any errors and they still lose.
Have to give it to the Indians though. They showed us last year what they COULD be capable of and this year it has lasted a little longer. This division is shit, so they could keep it up all year.

What’s rare is he consistently stays around 93-94 the first few innings and towards the end of the game is averaging 97-99. That just blows my mind.

Ridiculously good. Still stunned the Tribe won yesterday.

Young sucks as well. They also really miss VMart. What the fuck is a Danny Worth?

The opposite of Jason Kipnis.

I heard his last pitch was a filthy curve and he was walking off the mound before it even crossed the plate. Love that.
May 25th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
Verlander is the man. And he’s right. This team is underwhelming.
They need a 2B that can get on base.

Following Lisk’s instructions…
Break up …. Ohio.
Reds just swept the Braves in 4 games without getting a single meaningful contribution from Votto or Bruce. Ouch.

I heard that Choo blasted a change-up. If he did hit a changeup 457 feet, well.. I’m impressed.

Tigers suck!

Anyone want to give me some input on a pool I entered? Here’s how it works: Pick 6 teams from either league. Starting on June 6, the first person whose teams have totaled 60 wins between them wins the pool. Tiebreaker is name 2 players from the teams you’ve picked who hit the most homeruns in that time.
I’m thinking Rays, Rangers, Dodgers, Reds(?), Braves(?), and I don’t know who else. Any input will help since I haven’t really followed baseball closely this year. Should I take one or more teams from the Angels/Tigers/Yankees/Brewers/etc camp that has underperformed and might go on a tear?
May 25th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
Yes. He struck out the side in the eighth in full video-game mode. Triple digits and then that fall-of-the-table curve. It’s a shame the offense can’t do shit with RISP.
May 25th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
It was one of the best pitches I have seen all year. I can see it vividly in my mind right now, thats how good it was.
Yep. It was on a one-way trip to the second deck. absolutely crushed it.

The Internet: Where any fucktard can say anything they want.
May 25th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
The Jose Lopez shit with the tribe is hilarious. He’s played in like 10 or 11 starts. And gotten a hit in all of them. That’s the kind of good fortune that helps you win a diivsion.
May 25th, 2012 at 10:52 AM
The exciting thing about the Indians right now is they are young and are trending the way people in the organization thought they would. With the exception of the injuries that really slowed them down, the tribe was a little early to the party last year. This year and the next 2-3 or so should be very telling for how much this organization really values winning and competing at a high level.
May 25th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
I’d have to politely disagree. Isnt Choo a UFA (Boras client)? Asdrubal will be a UFA when Lindor is ready. This and next year are really the teams 1-2 year window, max.
May 25th, 2012 at 11:08 AM
scripty – i think your probably right, but i am holding out hope that the indians spend some money when the opportunity presents itself. Maybe watching the continued successes of Lee and Sabathia will make them be a little less shy this time around. Cabrera is extended, but if he keeps it up they’d be stupid not to resign him after 2014.
May 25th, 2012 at 11:11 AM
Well they’re certainly not good right now, would you have rather he gone with a more muted “The Tigers are less than average at baseball”?
May 25th, 2012 at 11:43 AM

before i lend my expert advice, how can i get in this pool?
May 25th, 2012 at 11:48 AM
It’s just set up by the guy who runs trivia at the bar I played at last night. If you want to send me $20 I can get you a spot but I don’t think he’s expecting too many players (15-20 probably).

SROD, if you’re out there, this is pretty awesome.
Scouser, you got that right. And, a shot of an R-model tanker to boot. Whisper jets!
Watched Verlander pitch yesterday. Dominant on the mound, and still has time to film funny commercials.
