Shaq Back to the Orlando Magic as GM? What Could Possibly Go Wrong?
Shaq’s interest in being GM of the Orlando Magic is apparently very real. ESPN’s Chris Broussard reported it Wednesday, then another ESPN writer confirmed it, and then Charles Barkley told Dan Patrick this morning that Shaq told him the same thing. Let’s briefly look at how some former players have done as GMs in the NBA. Results: Mixed bag.
The Worst: Michael Jordan (in Washington).
Very Close to the Worst: Isiah Thomas (in New York). Too painful to recap.
The Best: Jerry West (with the Lakers and Memphis).
Pretty Damn Good Job: Joe Dumars in Detroit and Larry Bird in Indiana.
Forgettable: Chris Mullin (in Golden State) and Elgin Baylor (with the Clippers).
Remember how Shaq and Dwight Howard had beef a couple years back? Shaq wasn’t thrilled that Dwight Howard started to infringe on his “Superman” turf and took a couple shots at him. And remember how Shaq left Orlando for Hollywood, and Magic fans never forgave him? Given his history with the franchise and its franchise player … yeah, I’d love this marriage.
It’d be a splashy move to bring in Dr. Shaq to be a GM, and I’d say Shaq is one of the few guys who probably wouldn’t treat the position as Dwight Howard’s yes man. Wouldn’t Shaq bring in his guy Brian Shaw as head coach? My guess is that Shaq’s first order of business would be to ship D12 out of town and then start hacking away at this sloppy roster. First question I’d ask Shaq: Are you a star guy, or would you trade Howard for a bunch of good players, the way the Nuggets dealt Melo to the Knicks?
Hey Shaq, if you get the job, here’s an interesting trade proposal that some guy sent to me on twitter:
Orlando gets: Andre Iguodala, Thad Young, Eric Bledsoe
LA Clippers get: Dwight Howard, Craig Brackins
Philadelphia gets: DeAndre Jordan, Blake Griffin, Hedo Turkoglu
The good news: Everyone kind of wins. Let’s break it down by team ….
The Magic ship their disgruntled center out of town and get plenty in return – a potential starting PG (who replaces Jameer Nelson), a defensive-minded SF in Iguodala, and a valuable 6th man in Young. Your starting lineup – Bledsoe, J Rich (can try to move him, but that contract is awful), Iguodala, Big Baby, Daniel Orton. Frontcourt is thin, but at least you shed the Hedo contract. Scoop up a shot-blocking big like Fab Melo in the draft. Reddick and Young are offense off the bench.
The Clippers don’t have to worry about CP3 leaving in 2013 – he just got the best center in the NBA! Howard’s star power makes up for the loss of star Blake Griffin. How would Reggie Evans like to be Dwight Howard’s wingman inside?
The 76ers get much-needed beef inside with Jordan/Griffin, and actually may come out as the big winners in this trade. Their strength right now is in the backcourt, and retaining Holiday/Williams/Turner is huge. You could be looking at Holiday at PG, Evan Turner at SG, Turkoglu at SF, Griffin at PF, Jordan at C. Philly gets its biggest star since Iverson left, and still has Lou Williams coming off the bench to provide offense.

While that 3-way trade could make sense in theory, I just don’t see anyway on earth that the Clips would trade Blake. He’s just way too popular in Lob City.
May 24th, 2012 at 2:32 PM
donnie walsh being hired for that same job?
May 24th, 2012 at 2:33 PM
Get out your fuckin brooms. Tribe time bitches.
May 24th, 2012 at 2:34 PM
trading griffin is a non starter, even for the slightly better and older version that d-ho is.
May 24th, 2012 at 2:35 PM
Wouldn’t Shaq bring in his guy Brian Shaq as head coach?
Doubtful.
May 24th, 2012 at 2:37 PM
Does it seem like Philly wins BIG here?
May 24th, 2012 at 2:37 PM
Nice try Knickerbocker fan, but Isiah most definitely qualifies in the worst category.
May 24th, 2012 at 2:37 PM
Pure Rage baby. Masterson pitched masterfully for once. Can’t wait for this team to get healthy and adds some right handed batters.
/Like Manny or Youk
May 24th, 2012 at 2:38 PM
At least Michael had the sense to suck where nobody cares. Isiah was villified in NY to the point where it’s almost overshadowed his playing career.
May 24th, 2012 at 2:39 PM
that’s commentariat fodder, EIC. you a commoner now?
May 24th, 2012 at 2:39 PM
These guys ain’t too fucking bad.

He’s not getting this job, right?

Sledgehammer is such a great song/video combination.
May 24th, 2012 at 2:41 PM
There’s no way in hell the Clips are trading Griffin. They have one of the best season in the franchises history, just to piss it away by trading one of their best players in exchange for a whiny ass dickhole? Get out of here with that garbage.
May 24th, 2012 at 2:42 PM
couldn’t agree more.
May 24th, 2012 at 2:42 PM
I would bet heavily against it.
Vez, you taking any action on this?
May 24th, 2012 at 2:43 PM
I like the trade I proposed last night better
May 24th, 2012 at 2:43 PM
Dont people post trade machines all the time here? Never seen one turned into a post.
/nobody twitters teh comments
May 24th, 2012 at 2:44 PM
I can’t see it from the Grizzlies point of view…
May 24th, 2012 at 2:45 PM
Shaq will forgo that wonderlic nonsense in player evaluation because it’s culturally biased.
May 24th, 2012 at 2:46 PM
DeAndre Jordan cannot be traded until 12/12/12. You really gotta start putting these through the trade machine before writing the posts.
May 24th, 2012 at 2:48 PM
Get out from Gay’s contract. Cut $5 million from payroll and another $5 mill becomes expiring contracts which gives them flexibility to add a piece.
With Gay, the have too many chefs in the kitchen. Moving him better defines them.

Can we get a GoT book thread kind of thing for people to talk about the Cleveland Indians and golf so that it doesn’t stink up the joint everywhere else?

And even if he could be traded, this would put Philadelphia over the luxury tax threshold.

Anyone else notice the humor in the twitter handle of the guy who sent that to him?
May 24th, 2012 at 2:51 PM
I guess my question is…would this be the best they could do if they decided to trade Rudy Gay?

May 24th, 2012 at 2:54 PM
Thats a good point. I guess with Memphis I am always assuming they are looking to shed salary, which is unfair since they have shown interest in paying guys as of late.
May 24th, 2012 at 2:54 PM
you bastard…i actually went to the home page to look.

May 24th, 2012 at 2:56 PM
There’s pretty much no way that the Lakers would take on both A’mare and Carmelo’s deal. Can you imagine a locker room with the tumor from Syracuse and Dwight? And Mike Brown being the one that has to control it?
Sign me up. I’ll actually watch a Hard Knocks type thing on that.
May 24th, 2012 at 2:56 PM
I am as NBA ignorant as they come, and even I know this is wrong.
May 24th, 2012 at 2:56 PM
I hate myself right now as well. I am one hungover soup sandwich today. A complete bag of shit.

I refuse to feel sorry for you. It died over two years ago. Nobody read or enjoyed it according to the EIC.
/I understand it was very time consuming to put together.
May 24th, 2012 at 2:57 PM
If the Sixers are taking on Jordan and Hedo (not to mention an impending Blake extension) that really affects their ability to re-sign Lou, Meeks, and Jrue. Also, Brackins is a FA so aside from breaking the Jordan no-trade clause it would also have to include some weird sign and trade too.

Yeah, CRM watching daytime TV is more important than our happiness.
May 24th, 2012 at 3:01 PM
I know I’m in the minority here, but if the Clippers can get Dwight, I think they unload Griffin in a heartbeat. I realize the past year Dwight acted like a child, but he is still one of the best centers of all time with a prime that will shadow Paul’s. They have to realize the limitation Griffin has, especially defensively. Add in that they can unload Jordan’s deal too, and I think they do it.
May 24th, 2012 at 3:02 PM
Just use 6 links (non-TBL version)…make them light reads (movie, music, video game, sport-related not big enough for a post, and for pageviews Tebow)…
and let the commenters have a place in the afternoon. I would venture to guess most people don’t click on every link (for me hockey/baseball, unless it’s hockey baseball), but many would check out the PM Roundup.
May 24th, 2012 at 3:03 PM
The Clippers aren’t trading Griffin, stupid.
May 24th, 2012 at 3:04 PM
i would watch hockey baseball all the fucking time.
May 24th, 2012 at 3:04 PM
Yeah, CRM watching daytime TV is more important than our happiness.
It was cutting into his bowling time.
As opposed to a 28 link link-dump which has to take for fucking ever.
It might, but a lot, and I mean a lot, of those links are two – three days old. I just assumed he has a system where he has the AM Round-up 80% done the night before it goes up and just plugs in whatever is newsworthy that morning. What has to take forever is finding the worst picture of a hot chick to use.
May 24th, 2012 at 3:05 PM
I would be very happy if Shaq went away forever, never to be heard from again.
May 24th, 2012 at 3:09 PM
but he is still one of the best centers of all time
this better be sarcastic, or it is mindblowingly retarded.
May 24th, 2012 at 3:11 PM
Someone’s been reading tvf
May 24th, 2012 at 3:13 PM
Maybe a bit of an exaggeration, but he’s certainly the best in the game right now.
May 24th, 2012 at 3:13 PM

May 24th, 2012 at 3:20 PM

May 24th, 2012 at 3:28 PM
So yeah.
May 24th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
i would watch hockey baseball all the fucking time.
Hmmmm, is this a full contact baseball or a hockey played with bats and a ball. Seems like a win either way.
May 24th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
This is beyond dumb… why in the world would the Clippers give up Griffin, Bledsoe and Jordan for Dwight Howard. Did you watch Eric Bledsoe in the playoffs?
Either way this is still not as dumb as any serious consideration of Shaq as an NBA GM
May 24th, 2012 at 3:49 PM
I’m with you. Seems like a high price (even though I’m not impressed with Jordan as I used to be) for a petulant superstar, especially when he fueded with a top 10 coach, and you have no idea how he’ll do with a bottom 5 coach.
I like Chris Paul, but I like him a lot better with Bledsoe as the third guard. How is Chris Paul going to do playing 40 minutes a game, the way he plays? And what makes you think there is 0.0% chance Paul would leave if they got Howard?
May 24th, 2012 at 5:01 PM
Isn’t it the case that ~75% of NBA GMs in the last 25 years are former players? It’s certainly not a rare thing whatsoever. It’s getting a bit rarer, but I still count 14 former players as current GMs, very nearly half of the league.
