Allen Iverson’s Emotional Return to Philly Sparks 76ers to Force Game Seven
Allen Iverson, clad in a Lou Williams 76ers jersey, gave one of his trademark interviews to ESPN’s Lisa Salters Wednesday night during game six of Philly-Boston: “I’m not using that word [retire]. I want to play basketball so bad … the way it is right now, I’ve accepted the fact [the NBA] might not happen … I just love to play and I want to have another opportunity to play on the professional level.” There’s something about the realness and candor in his voice … man, I miss that guy.
The game? Andrew Toney, Bobby Jones and Dr. J were just too much for Dennis Johnson, Kevin McHale and Robert Parrish, and the 76ers won, 82-75. Game seven, which will be won by Boston, will be Saturday. This happened:

This is why the NBA sucks. Why can’t you play Friday? Do you really need two days off?!?!!?
May 24th, 2012 at 9:48 AM
Way to mail it in on this post. I think you outdid the Dwight Howard post from last night here, but it’s close.
May 24th, 2012 at 9:51 AM
Couldn’t have said it better myself. You just know that before the game all the players were sitting in the locker room thinking, “Man, we have got to win this for AI. Play hard ya’ll AI is here.”
May 24th, 2012 at 9:51 AM
I missed the game, anyone want to share some thoughts about it other than Iverson’s appearance/interview?
Anyone think the Celts blow game 7?
May 24th, 2012 at 9:55 AM
J-Mac got your back with some hard-hitting analysis:
May 24th, 2012 at 9:56 AM
If only there was a way for people who didn’t watch the game to find out what happened…
Looking forward to game 7. Will probably be ugly, but should be entertaining.
May 24th, 2012 at 9:58 AM
You’d be better off just posting the videos with no commentary next time.
May 24th, 2012 at 10:00 AM
Rondo took the night off. Their entire offense consisted of KG shooting long 2′s. Also Philly’s guards were getting in the lane all night. Elton Brand had another good game. The only reason Boston was in it was b/c Philly was horrible from the line.
Nobody thinks Philly will win G7. If they do, it will be hilarious.

“This one’s for Allen.”
May 24th, 2012 at 10:05 AM
LOL
May 24th, 2012 at 10:06 AM
Dont complain, the NBA has gotten MUCH better at keeping series moving. Just a few years ago 2 and 3 day breaks were the norm, not the exception.
May 24th, 2012 at 10:07 AM
I freaking love Allen Iverson. I don’t think anyone loves basketball more. Kobe, Jordan, etc. love winning more, but I don’t think you can love playing the game of basketball more than AI.
May 24th, 2012 at 10:07 AM
I turned the tv on right when he said this. I thought it was a great, honest comment. I miss watching AI play. Dude put everything he had into the game. The first game of the Finals when he went off and took a game from LA when no one thought they had a chance to take even one game was sweet. I still remember the three he hit in the corner and then he stepped over a Laker and stared at him. Shit was badass.
May 24th, 2012 at 10:08 AM
So awesome to see Iverson back in Philly. Love that guy.
May 24th, 2012 at 10:11 AM
Great post. Great analysis.
May 24th, 2012 at 10:12 AM
Rags and Devs Game 6 brohiem.
May 24th, 2012 at 10:13 AM
Apparently he was really smelly on the court. Lot of players said that he was the smelliest player in the league when he played. I learned this from Bill Simmons podcast a while back.
May 24th, 2012 at 10:15 AM
I’m also Team Iverson. I hated the way he became a symbol for everything middle-aged white people hated about the NBA. Guy was must-watch in his prime. Unfortunately he only knows one way to play and didnt really fit in the league once his days as a star were over.
May 24th, 2012 at 10:15 AM
How come Spurs/OKC series doesn’t start til Sunday? Both will have a week off prior to game 1. That’s insane.
May 24th, 2012 at 10:16 AM
I am still amazed at what he was able to do in the league, given his physical stature. Just a tough competitor. That’s why Philly loves him so much.
The flaws in his game aside, he was appointment viewing in Philly when he played here.
May 24th, 2012 at 10:17 AM
RT @TBLlemming: Great post with some fantastic content and analysis, Jason. Why do you have so many haters?
May 24th, 2012 at 10:17 AM
Because the vaunted “bestern” conference is a steaming pile of shit and put up no fight to the only 2 halfway decent teams it has.
May 24th, 2012 at 10:18 AM
The only game the Lakers lost in that entire postseason.
May 24th, 2012 at 10:19 AM
Between Boston home cooking and two days between games, I can’t disagree with you.
If this game was on Friday (instead of Saturday, giving the older Celtics an extra day), I think the Sixers could win.
May 24th, 2012 at 10:20 AM
+1 condescending and sneering step over Tyronn Lue
May 24th, 2012 at 10:21 AM
Great tactic.
May 24th, 2012 at 10:24 AM
That’s probably the signature game of his career: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_G-TDCJdTY
May 24th, 2012 at 10:30 AM
Two things that stood out. One, young Kobe with the faux fro was badass. Two, I forgot how god damn dominant Shaq was in that series. Just owned the bigs of Philly.
May 24th, 2012 at 10:34 AM
Jesus tap dancing Christ I hope the 76ers pull out a win Saturday.
May 24th, 2012 at 10:34 AM
The process servers probably killing each other to get to him first last night.
Best player on that team that douched out at the Olympics or World Championships.
May 24th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
Indiana would be a 7 seed in the West and Philly would have never made the playoffs.
Eastern conference semis yo!
May 24th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
44-20
28-20
30-12
34-14
29-13
57% from the field, 3.4 bpg, 4.8 apg
May 24th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
Lima is probably livid that there’s no mention of Kobe in that intro.
May 24th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
Really? Because Indiana had more wins than anyone SA or OKC has beaten so far.
May 24th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
Shaq almost had a quadruple double in G2 of that series. 28-20-9-8.
May 24th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
Number of Eastern Conference playoff teams with losing records to the Western Conference this season: 4
Number of Western Conference playoff teams with losing records to the Eastern Conference this season: 0
May 24th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
Yes.
May 24th, 2012 at 10:44 AM
No they wouldn’t. And it’s not even close.
May 24th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
Memphis’ record vs. the East: 15-3.
Denver’s record vs. the East: 16-2.
I’ll hand it to Indy – they played very well vs. the West this year, but I suspect if they had to go through the nightly grind of the Western Conference every night they would have finished with a much worse record. Just think of them as being like Boise State.
May 24th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
The Eastern Conference side has been way more affected by injuries than the West.
May 24th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
That was supposed to be in response to Coop’s stupid comment about the Western Conference sucking.
May 24th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
Indiana had a better record than the Lakers.
May 24th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
Let’s face it, if Bosh and Rose dont get hurt, the ECF is already set and we’re talking about 2 potentially great series.
May 24th, 2012 at 10:52 AM
So which team would Rose brick a free throw against in the semis to hand them a ticket to the finals?
May 24th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
You can take it a step further…3 East teams have winning records against the West. 9 West teams have winning records against the East. I don’t understand the point of this argument, but top to bottom it is pretty undeniable the West is better.
May 24th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
There’s a part of me that really wants to see a Philly-Indy conference finals, just to hear people crying about how nobody wants to watch it.
May 24th, 2012 at 10:57 AM
Well, to be fair…
May 24th, 2012 at 10:58 AM
Wasn’t Indy 13-5 against the West?
Indy
vs West: .722
vs East: .604
Memphis
vs West: .542
vs East: .833
Denver
vs West: .458
vs East: .889
I’m not sure exactly how to interpret this except to say that all three of these teams played significantly better against the opposing conference. It would be interesting to see a full analysis of the cross conference play.
May 24th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
The East is just down (again) this year. I actually think that Indy is a very solid team, but if pitted in the same conference as Memphis, Denver, LAL and LAC I think they would finish behind them, especially in a non-condensed schedule.
May 24th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
Besides some trailer parks in tornado alley, is anyone really excited about the West? I’ll watch it, but I’m not exactly thrilled about it. Bron Vs Boston will be awesome.
May 24th, 2012 at 11:10 AM
Basketball fans.
May 24th, 2012 at 11:12 AM
Watching the Spurs play basketball is about as good as it gets right now in the NBA. Combine that with Durant/Russ/Harden and I think it’s going to be pretty damn exciting.
May 24th, 2012 at 11:20 AM
I’m enjoying every series a great deal, to be honest. I don’t get the bitching about “ugly” basketball. I’ve loved this Philly-Boston series- obviously watching the Spurs play is pretty much the pinnacle of watching great bball right now though.
May 24th, 2012 at 11:22 AM
That’s fair. I don’t necessarily agree, but I can see where you’re coming from for sure.
May 24th, 2012 at 11:28 AM
I’ve enjoyed most of the playoffs as well, but Philly-Boston has been a bit painful. Boston’s banged up and old, and Philly is really just an average (at best) offensive team. The series would have significantly benefitted from some of the physicality of the Heat-Pacers series. I just don’t find it very compelling.
Heat-Celtics (should it happen) will be great. Spurs-Thunder is going to be awesome. Looking forward to both.
May 24th, 2012 at 11:37 AM
A.I. goona do, what A.I. gonna do
May 24th, 2012 at 11:55 AM
Is this Ballin’? TBL is turning into a linkfarm
May 24th, 2012 at 12:43 PM
It was awesome to see Allen Iverson kicked out of the Borgata because he owed them $800,000 in markers. He wants back in because he is broke. No news there.
