Larry Bird: The Pacers Were Soft as Dexter Pittman and Miami Roughed Up Indiana, 115-83
Larry Bird, the President of the Indiana Pacers, had this to say to Mike Wells of the Indy Star after the Heat had their way with the Pacers in game five:
“I can’t believe my team went soft,” Bird said on the phone. “S-O-F-T. I’m disappointed. I never thought it would happen.”
With their emotional leaders – Danny Granger and David West – sidelined with sprained ankles, the Pacers went 2-ply soft. Udonis Haslem absolutely destroyed Tyler Hasbrough. No response. Dexter Pittman measured Lance Stephenson and drilled him with a devastating elbow. No reaction. Maybe the Pacers are still in awe of what LeBron and Wade did in game four. Or, as Roy Hibbert put it:
“And-1 mix tape out there. They were just dunking, having fun and doing whatever the hell they wanted.”
So in a 96-hour span, the Heat went from being in deep, deep trouble – TRADE WADE! – to 2-2 to bullies putting on an And-1 mix tape showcase.
I like Bird’s last-ditch effort to save the season. He tried it before. Back when he was playing with the Celtics. In 1984. Via Nexis:
And it didn’t sit well with Larry Bird, who sensed the 1984 NBA Championship slipping away to the hated Lakers.
“We played like sissies,” Larry Bird said 26 years ago, calling out his teammates, appealing to their manhood and pride.
Any true Lakers-Celtics fan remembers what happened next.
Boston turned the series around in Game 4, Kevin McHale taking down Kurt Rambis with a clothesline tackle and the Celtics assuming the role of aggressor, attacker and provoker the remainder of the series.
Here’s that iconic McHale clothesline. In case you’re wondering, Boston won in seven.

I liked 1984 nba games. If you went into the key prepare to get murdered. If you played outside the key, no handchecking or anything.

I count at least 10 suspensions from that video.

this is hilarious for some reason.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:00 AM
Dexter Pittman should be sat for at least one game. That was dirty and deliberate.
Hansbrough and Haslem should have been given flagrant 2s.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:00 AM
Yeah, as Simmons has said in the past, this incident would basically ruin any NBA series today. Ah, the days of hard fouls.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:02 AM
Pittman winking and holding back a smile at :54 is quite the guilty non-omission.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:03 AM
Great game, great hits, thats some quality playoff basketball. Could be a nice eastern conf rivalry setting up, Indiana has good pieces and will get better.
Well, the kind of rivalry where one team talks shit but LeBron always wins. Like the Wizards/Cavs.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:03 AM
I absolutely despise Hansbrough, but he was clearly going for ball. Overaggressive, but still with intention of getting the ball. Haslem clearly wasn’t. Pittman looks like he was taught by John Cheney and not Rick Barnes.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:07 AM
To the people overreacting to the fouls last night saying these fouls have no place in the game. These types of fouls are woven into the historical fabric of the game as evidenced here. The only difference is there were enough White basketball players back then to have it be considered hard nosed basketball as opposed to the 90′s description of it as thug ball. I loved it back then when players had the opportunity to police the game themselves on the court as opposed to the commissioner appeasing forces who never had love for the NBA anyway.

If I had to compare Pittman’s move to a dog I would compare it to my girlfriend’s dog stealing my toast this morning.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:09 AM
Heat are playing with a tenacity of the Bulls when they hit back at the Knicks. good for them.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:09 AM
the ball was in the way of Hansbrough’s intended target.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:10 AM
I know it’s fun to talk about these hard fouls and it’s a cool narrative, but the Pacers didn’t lose because Haslem and Anthony committed hard fouls.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:11 AM
No matter what follows, you should never start a sentence with this:
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:12 AM
I love that the Heat are finally embracing their villain-hood.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:13 AM
Get out of here with your crazy facts and such.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:13 AM
Remember when Psycho T was going to be a high energy 6th man who could give you a little offense and solid play off the bench? Good times.
Wonder if Spolestra is old enough to have used a “Sweep the Legs” reference when instructing Pittman?
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:14 AM
meh. they are just finally showing a backbone. this team has been getting beat to shit the last two year. i am tired of the villain narrative.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:16 AM
The hockey game last night was absolutely phenomenal. Big Tits McGee was back behind the Yotes bench. She had a wonderful performance.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:16 AM
Hard fouls are fine. Hansbrough and Haslem were in the heat of the game. Pittman was straight gooning on Stephenson. He wasn’t boxing out or protecting the rim. His team was up 35 with less than 20 seconds left.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:18 AM
I don’t get how they got a 3 seed with that roster. I like their ancillary players ( George & Hill). Rest of that team is just whatever.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:18 AM
The Bad Boys would beat the shit out of both these soft teams.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:19 AM
agreed
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:22 AM
There weren’t many players as competitive as Larry Bird. So he calling that team SOFT is not surprising. Most teams in today’s NBA would be soft by Larry Legend’s standard.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:22 AM
Exactly. That being said, Haslem’s foul was certainly 100% calculated and dirty just like Pittman’s was, just less obvious and malicious. They should both be suspended, and Pittman for numerous games.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:27 AM
Also, outside of all the stupid tough guy fouls, the Heat played a great game and finally got some support from one of their perimeter shooters (Battier), who was lights out last night. That was their best game of the playoffs.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:29 AM
I don’t care if you’re a Heat fan. You don’t give suspensions willy nilly for every hard foul or dirty play calculated or not.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:30 AM
Really starting to wonder about Vogel as an Offensive coach… seems like they never run plays for Hibbert, he should be putting up at least 20 points a game. No cross screens for him or running him to the opposite block of Lebron… mind boggling.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:31 AM
i was watching the first half and it was a two point game with about a minute or so left in the half. turn on a doc, check back in about an hour later and it’s a 20-point blowout.
woof.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:33 AM
Nope, you certainly shouldn’t, but the NBA of today does. If they are being consistent, that play results in a suspension, mostly because Haslem should have been ejected at that moment and wasn’t. Pittman’s play certainly should result in a suspension.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:37 AM
Dexter Pittman (from our good friends at Wikipedia):
Wow.
/Still a dick move last night
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:40 AM
Mostly because they’re a) deep, and b) play in the East. They need a true wing playmaker because Danny Granger isn’t taking them places.
I don’t think that Hansbrough’s foul on Wade was nearly as calculated as Haslem’s, but I’d be fine with Udonis not getting suspended. It’s the playoffs, a physical series, and the way tough basketball is meant to be played. It will be a shame when Stern levies a one-game suspension on him, as he’s just neutering the game.
What Pittman did, though, was fucked up, There are ways to send messages with hard fouls, and being subtle about it. Pretty whack that no Pacers stood up for Brooklyn’s Finest.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:40 AM
Pragamatism is more valuable than consistency in this matter.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:40 AM
Ha. Bird helped up Rambis. That was awesome.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:43 AM
I think they have a nice team. They also had the 5th best record in the NBA, so they aren’t that bad. Hibbert is very good and should get the ball hilariously more than he does, we know West can play, Hill and Granger can both play, and George has had moments in this series. Not to mention a good bench and a lot of high energy guys like Barbosa, Hansbrough, and Amundson. They’re a solid team. Not many teams can beat Miami when they’re on like they were last night.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:43 AM
100% agree. Logic isn’t a strong suit of the NBA though.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:44 AM
Yea, Darrell- as much as you may want to go back to the old school NBA, the NBA has set a precedent recently with regard to how they handle these plays. If they don’t take action, they will blatantly be disregarding the own rules that they have punished other players by, IMO.
FWIW, while I respect your opinion on this and your desire to “de-pussify” the NBA, I don’t think this would be a good thing- I just don’t think calculated dirty fouls have a place in the game. Just play basketball. If you want to administer a hard foul and plan to, don’t just blatantly hit a guy in the head/face. Hit him hard hard but not dangerously. Also, race has nothing to do with it and shouldn’t be introduced into this argument- I don’t care if blatant dirty fouls have been part of the game; just because something has been that way in the past doesn’t mean it’s right.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:45 AM
Hansbrough’s foul on Wade was not a flagrant. He made a play on the ball and Wade’s head got hit on the follow through. These things happen. The NBA is embarrassingly weak about this crap.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:48 AM
If Boston had stayed healthy all year, they would have been a 3 seed…or if Atlanta wasn’t a pile of underachieving dogshit
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:48 AM
I disagree. It was. It wasn’t as bad as Haslem’s and I think was accurately called a Flagrant 1, but it was a Flagrant. He raked his hand across Wade’s face and gave a high five after knocking him to the ground. You don’t cut a guy’s face from behind by going for the ball.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:50 AM
After Worthy threw him into the photographers… Rambis shouldve bitchslapped Worthy in private for that one.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:51 AM
I still think that he blows no matter what anyone says.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:52 AM
Not a flagrant. Plus, knowing Wade’s devotion to dramatics, he probably bladed himself.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:53 AM
+1 WWF chair shot
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:57 AM
They need to reconsider the precedent. Everyone talks about how Chicago had to take their beatings from Detroit before they climbed to the top of the mountain. The same was true for Detroit against Boston. Two of the greatest teams in NBA history were created from those battles. Jordan developed his mid range game and put on 15-20 lbs of muscle for one opponent. The Bulls became great when Pippen became mentally tough enough to compete against one opponent. The Pistons drafted Rodman with one opponent in mind. They transitioned from a high scoring no defense squad to one of the best defensive teams ever in less than 5 years to match the physical play of one opponent. The game polices itself, it doesn’t need to be policed from Park Ave, NYC.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:58 AM
I laughed at this.
I was surprised how quickly he got up (by his standards), after going down like a sack of flour.
May 23rd, 2012 at 10:59 AM
Racist
Drew blood man, intended or not, they drew fist blood…(/Rambo voice)
May 23rd, 2012 at 11:00 AM
He should’ve gotten up and done a defiant “wooo”.
May 23rd, 2012 at 11:01 AM
I agree with this. But they can’t just reconsider it right now just to appease this Heat team. That’s incredibly unfair to guys that have already been punished. If there is going to be a change in philosophy, it at least should happen in the offseason.
And I concede that fouls like Haslem’s may have a place in the game, even today.
But there can’t be a place for fouls like Pittmans. That was disgusting.
May 23rd, 2012 at 11:02 AM
lol
May 23rd, 2012 at 11:03 AM
one other thing. Race perception in the history of the NBA has always played a significant role. I’ll make that argument all day, everyday.
May 23rd, 2012 at 11:04 AM
Best part is that McHale and Rambis give each other a high-five was the fracas is still going on, just like “it’s all part of the game.”
May 23rd, 2012 at 11:08 AM
If the Pacers want to be a better team, they need to find a slasher or at least someone who’s willing to take it to the hole. Less jump shots. And feed Hibbert and West in the post. And if one gets doubled and kicks it out, go back to them again.
May 23rd, 2012 at 11:09 AM
7’2″ and he’s never shot 50% from the field in a season. He’s improved but this idea that he’s a star in the making is ridiculous.
May 23rd, 2012 at 11:11 AM
See: Horry/Nash
May 23rd, 2012 at 11:12 AM
Damn, I’ve watched that Rambis-McHale video a lot and never noticed they had a little moment away from the scrum without any noticeable hostilities.
Players had way less muscle mass then, too.
May 23rd, 2012 at 11:14 AM
It only looks that way because they’re showing so much leg.
May 23rd, 2012 at 11:15 AM
He shot 49.7% this year, in which was his first all star year. So unless we’re being crazy nit-picky, that’s 50%.
And I don’t think he’s a star in the making, but he’s a very good center, and like his Georgetown days, needs to demand the ball more and be more aggressive. Not many guys can guard him in this league with his hook shot and shooting touch.
May 23rd, 2012 at 11:19 AM
And more than anything, Hibbert is the best option the Pacers have and the offense should be running through him. Not many teams have a huge center who is a capable and skilled offensive player. They’re stupid for constantly jacking up bad jump shots and not feeding the post to him and West. That’s the obvious advantage they have against Miami with Bosh out, and that is why they were successful in the first couple of games.
May 23rd, 2012 at 11:36 AM
I made that statement more for the terms of the discussion between you and I. I definitely agree that this applies to the general history of the NBA, though.
May 23rd, 2012 at 11:38 AM
Fixed.
May 23rd, 2012 at 12:37 PM
Vogel can’t make his players make entry passes.
