Colin Cowherd Called New Orleans the “Least Safe” City in the Country, Wrongly
Colin Cowherd put his foot in his mouth again, shocking I know. Wondering why New Orleans was chosen to host the Super Bowl, he called the city “the least safe major country, not (his) opinion, statistically the least safe in the country.” We’re not sure where he pulled that number from. Neither this rating, this rating nor this rating has New Orleans in the top ten. We’re not sure why this was an issue, since it’s THE TENTH SUPER BOWL New Orleans has hosted, not to mention the Finals Fours, BCS Title Games etc.
We would suspect most people affected would suffer the (in Cowherd’s opinion) subpar airport facilities to spend a week eating and living it up in America’s greatest culinary and cultural entrepot.

STOP TALKING ABOUT HIM. This is why he won’t go away, people won’t stop talking about him. Dammit.

A plethora of areas in Detroit are war zones.
May 23rd, 2012 at 4:09 PM
And the others are filled with hipsters.
But, hey, the airport is nice…
May 23rd, 2012 at 4:11 PM
Detroit, Flint and Lansing are all in the top 20 I think. Lansing never felt dangerous growing up, but people did get shot a lot now that I think about it.

Camden NJ, is the top three. Sharing with Detroit. If you’re white and in Camden at night, the cops will escort you out of town.
May 23rd, 2012 at 4:18 PM
breaking story here.
May 23rd, 2012 at 4:18 PM
There are times when Cowherd goes off about things that absolutely make no sense….this was one of them.
May 23rd, 2012 at 4:18 PM
i laughed. Cowherd is such a clown.
May 23rd, 2012 at 4:18 PM
Don’t forget about us up here in Saginaw….

Pageviews. If people would quit clicking on Cowherd related links, Cowherd wouldn’t be getting the post. It isn’t the site’s fault. It is us, the commenters.
St. Louis and KCMO got be high on that list.
/Not clicking links. Forbes and US News generally have annoying pop up/full screen ads.

Camden NJ, is the top three.
They have a nice aquarium.
May 23rd, 2012 at 4:22 PM
Spent 24hrs in county jail in Camden, good time.
True, that area, the waterfront with the Tweeter, Campbell’s Field, and the Victor, are the only nice-ish parts of Camden.
May 23rd, 2012 at 4:22 PM

Where are ye Lisk? Overall crime rates do not indicate how dangerous a city is. The vast majority of all crimes are petty and do not put anyone in danger.
The violent crime rate is a better indicator of how dangerous a city is but is still flawed because it only includes crimes reported to police–and much violent crime is not. However, violent crime rates have zero impact on the overall crime rates because of the frequency of both.
May 23rd, 2012 at 4:23 PM
I hate reading, The Top 5 blah blah blah, only to find no fucking list. I hate that shit
May 23rd, 2012 at 4:24 PM
Hey remember when he was getting a TV sit com? Yeah that was amusing.
May 23rd, 2012 at 4:24 PM
You’re pretty safe at those Camden water front attractions, like the aquarium, the minor league ballpark (which is quite nice), and the concert venue. Also, events at Wiggins Park (right on the river).
Other than those places, there is really no need to go to Camden, unless you have jury duty. In which case, you need to work harder to avoid jury duty.
May 23rd, 2012 at 4:24 PM
I keep trying to convince North Jersey to take credit for Trenton, I don’t want it. It’s bad enough we have to deal with Camden and AC in South Jersey.
May 23rd, 2012 at 4:24 PM
Louisiana is still a fucking shit hole that I wish would to be carved from the United States and sunk.
May 23rd, 2012 at 4:25 PM
The most impressive thing is that New York is #269 on the CQ list.
May 23rd, 2012 at 4:26 PM
North Jersey has Elizabeth, Newark, Patterson and Union, that’s bad enough.
May 23rd, 2012 at 4:26 PM
Long before the Super Dome,
Where the Saints of football play,
Lived a city that the damned called home,
Hear their hellish roundelay…
May 23rd, 2012 at 4:28 PM
I knew someone who is a Pfizer rep. His first territory included Elizabeth and Irvington. During his first week or so, he was driving to an office, and a cop stopped him and told him that the HS was letting out about a block up, and he should avoid that area at that time of day from now on.
May 23rd, 2012 at 4:30 PM
Oh I don’t know, maybe because it has the highest murder rate in the nation and their mayor yesterday had a State of the City speech centered on dealing with the murders?
May 23rd, 2012 at 4:31 PM
Aint got shit on St.Louis.

May 23rd, 2012 at 4:41 PM
Patterson and Union
Paterson is not nice (sorry Senator), but Union is fine. You might be thinking of Vauxhall, which is between Union and Maplewood.
May 23rd, 2012 at 4:43 PM
Considering all those towns are about 2 blocks big, does it really matter?
May 23rd, 2012 at 4:43 PM
I am under the impression that if I’m ever assaulted in St. Louis, I can simply start a baseball discussion, and the nice young man will not only stop assaulting me, but he will applaud me for my sports acumen.
Wrong part of town, Buddy. And the thing is, East St. Louis is in Illinois. It doesn’t even count.
May 23rd, 2012 at 4:44 PM
Isn’t New Orleans one of the murder capitals of the US? I know when you get outside the Bourbon Street and garden district, things take a significant turn.
May 23rd, 2012 at 4:44 PM
Treme owns.
That’s really all I wish to contribute to this conversation.

I lived on Buford Highway for about 2 years, and Decatur for 3. Huskerdawg and other native Atlantans can fill you guys on how dangerous those parts of Atlanta can be.
May 23rd, 2012 at 5:01 PM
Camden proabbaly isn’t even one of the five most dangerous cities in NJ anymore, much less the US.
Hells yeah.
May 23rd, 2012 at 5:02 PM
he must be looking at pre-2005 stats before so many people were displaced to Houston and Atlanta.
May 23rd, 2012 at 5:04 PM
I lived on Buford Highway for about 2 years,
Ha ha – who lives on Buford hwy that doesn’t sell cars, work in a pawn shop, serve asian food, or hang at the Quicktrip waiting for construction work?
May 23rd, 2012 at 5:06 PM
Somebody’s killed every 10 minutes in Chicago.
May 23rd, 2012 at 5:11 PM
Just read the AA piece. Jesus Christ. Why don’t you guys just do a news search or something? The NOLA shooting problem has been all over the place recently. Yeah what Cowherd said is stupid but to trot out those crime rankings and ignore the murder rate is worse than the generalization he made, it’s ignoring a fact to take someone down.
May 23rd, 2012 at 5:17 PM
This. Cowherd=assclown, but the mayor NOLA has requested federal help to solve a murder “epidemic.”
May 23rd, 2012 at 5:18 PM
Although he is a douche, he’s not wrong.
May 23rd, 2012 at 5:18 PM
Louisiana is still a fucking shit hole that I wish would to be carved from the United States and sunk.
Funny, I keep hoping the U.S. will wise up and give Texas back to Mexico. But hey, to each his own.
The NOLA shooting problem has been LONG BEFORE HURRICANE KATRINA.
Fixed.
May 23rd, 2012 at 5:18 PM
Duffy needs to do a little more research.
Top 5 murder rates in the U.S. in 2010.
1. New Orleans
2. St. Louis
3. Baltimore
4. Detroit
5. Newark
Per FBI data.
I’d call that “least safe”.
May 23rd, 2012 at 5:19 PM
Funny, I keep hoping the U.S. will wise up and give Texas back to Mexico. But hey, to each his own.
F-off.
May 23rd, 2012 at 5:19 PM
Yesterday. YESTERDAY. Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut I guess that wouldn’t come up in a google search for NOLA crime.
May 23rd, 2012 at 5:21 PM
Isn’t New Orleans one of the murder capitals of the US? I know when you get outside the Bourbon Street and garden district, things take a significant turn.
Just passed the two year anniversary of one of my best friends getting murdered in his own home while his two-year-old daughter slept in another room. Case remains unsolved. So yeah, I’m a little fucking biased about this shit.

May 23rd, 2012 at 5:29 PM
He has apparently never been to Memphis either…
May 23rd, 2012 at 5:30 PM
My mother lives in west Houston. The crime rate, including murder rate, quadrupled in 2005-2006, due to the influx of Katrina evacuees. I’m fairly sure her home value went down too. I think the crime rate has since returned to relatively normal, but a car wash and gas station, both only blocks from my mother’s house and places I used to use frequently when I still lived there, both experienced shootings. Neither of which has been solved from last I heard.
May 23rd, 2012 at 5:32 PM

Wait a minute.
… STEVE MCNAIR WAS DRAFTED BY HOUSTON!
Coincidence? Draw your own conclusions, Watson.

I’ve come across former Memphis residents in STL. They share that opinion.

Nope, no racists in Louisiana. None at all.
Really though, let’s not start a cross border war here. Let’s save that for the U.S.-Mexican border.

Who cares about murders really? Mostly jackasses that know each other.
No one really cares about that. Muggings, petty theft and hold-ups are what tourists fear.
/I had to come up with some kind counterpoint to Cowherd
May 23rd, 2012 at 5:48 PM
Nope, no racists in Louisiana. None at all.
Never said that. But shit, that’s in a lot of places.
May 23rd, 2012 at 5:49 PM
Never said that. But shit, that’s in a lot of places.
I know you never said that. But Nada made a disparaging remark about Texas because it’s where Vidor, i.e. the place where James Byrd was dragged to his death in the 90s, is located. I was merely pointing out that he’s playing the pot to Texas’s kettle.

Nothing scared me more than doing some consulting work at Jackson Mem Hospital in Miami a while back. I actually spent the night in a room once – it was near midnight and they told me to stay.
May 23rd, 2012 at 5:54 PM
YOUR MCDONALD’S IS READY
That made me laugh. The truth is comical.
May 23rd, 2012 at 5:55 PM
He was killed in Jasper
May 23rd, 2012 at 5:56 PM
Point still taken about Vidor.
May 23rd, 2012 at 6:00 PM
He was killed in Jasper
You’re right, mea culpa. Vidor, I feel, was involved somehow though.
May 23rd, 2012 at 6:03 PM
Vidor is a close to the border right before Orange and the Louisiana border. They call it a Sundown Town. If you are black, you better be inside when its dark. I learned of this last year. You work with a lot of “interesting” people when you work on the road.
May 23rd, 2012 at 6:04 PM
That whole Orange, Vidor, Beaumont area was never on my radar until I started doing what I do now.
May 23rd, 2012 at 6:05 PM
Vidor I think is the Texas HQ for the KKK. That’s probably what I was thinking of.
May 23rd, 2012 at 6:07 PM
The first KKK member I ever saw was off hwy 59 in Cleveland. That’s another great place
May 23rd, 2012 at 6:08 PM
To put it bluntly, I work with a lot of people who are proud to be white trash.
May 23rd, 2012 at 6:12 PM
Vidor I think is the Texas HQ for the KKK.
Funny, but is Connecticut the national KKK HQ?
May 23rd, 2012 at 6:14 PM
I remember making my first trip to New Orleans from Austin during law school and reading all the billboards as you drove into the Vidor/Orange area on I-10. Made me check that my doors were locked. And I’m white.
May 23rd, 2012 at 6:15 PM
Funny, but is Connecticut the national KKK HQ?
Kokomo, Indiana actually. Or it was at one time.
May 23rd, 2012 at 6:15 PM
There are definitely parts of East Texas where the white people are white and the black people are nervous.
May 23rd, 2012 at 6:40 PM
dude, white people are the safest in these cities.
May 23rd, 2012 at 7:13 PM
I’d call that, “2010″. Are the 2011 stats not out yet?
May 23rd, 2012 at 7:19 PM
What about Flint?
May 23rd, 2012 at 8:09 PM
NOLA still number one. Again, YESTERDAY, the mayor held a speech addressing the “murder epidemic” in the city.
May 23rd, 2012 at 9:41 PM
New Orleans may have a murder epidemic, but what the fuck does that have to do with the herbs that’ll be in town for the Super Bowl? It’s still a stupid argument.
May 23rd, 2012 at 9:56 PM
Baltimore dropped below 200 murders in 2011 for first time since 1977. Wire-esque fudging of the numbers?

=======================================================================
Every mid/major city in the USA has areas where you’d hate to be when the sun goes down. I can show you places in Biloxi Ms. where it’s not safe to be stopped at a red light. New orleans is no different than any other mid major city in that regard. NOLA had 8.5 million visitors in 2011.many brought their families and had no trouble. Associating the tourist areas in New orleans with the 9th ward is tantamount to comparing the crime rate in Harlem to Manhatten. How many people do you know say since we are visiting NY, let’s go cruising Harlem at 2 am? Cowherd is an elitest as well as ignorant. If you listen close enough you’ll notice his political views are very libertarian. While they make good points at times, they also have simple solutions to very complex issues. It sounds good in debate, but doesn’t work in the real world. After Katrina,he suggested strongly that N.O. not be rebuilt due to the threat of future hurricanes and most of the city below sea level. When callers pointed out the importance of a port city that is critical to the economies of many cities located along the entire length of the Mississippi river,he simply cut them off.
I’m not saying New orleans deserves a Pro Football and Basketball team. All I’m saying is a port city connecting the Gulf of Mexico and the MS river is vital for shipping interests. Without that major port, economies throughout the midwest would suffer, not just the economy of south La.
May 24th, 2012 at 6:56 PM
These ratings always make me laugh. There’s no a single American city that I’m afraid to be in. There are areas in those cities where it isn’t smart to take a stroll, or hang out the window of a car yelling racial epitaphs. But generally, this is a safe and boring ass country. White people like to pretend that places like Detroit are little safer than Beirut in the 80s, but it’s nonsense. I’ve been all over St. Louis, Detroit, New Orleans, DC, Baltimore, never had any trouble.
Flint is still a shit hole. And Cowherd is a half-educated dick.
