Fixing the Lakers? Easy: Fire Mike Brown and Trade Pau Gasol for Andre Iguodala
The Lakers are at a crossroads. Bill Plaschke is hyperventilating. Ice Cube is pissed. Kobe turns 34 in August and is due $58 million over the next two seasons. Pau Gasol turns 32 in July. Andrew Bynum remains an enigma. The jump shooters are unreliable; so is the spotty bench.
For a franchise that won five titles from 1980-1988, then went through a post-Magic drought; only to rebound with Shaq, Kobe and Phil for three in a row (2000-2002) and then go through a post-Shaq funk until Gasol arrived to help Kobe win two more in 2009-2010, it feels like another dry patch is approaching.
Can LA do anything to prevent it?
You’ve got to keep Andrew Bynum. He only turns 25 in October. Yeah, he’s got maturity issues (and his career has been injury-riddled), but unless you’re going to get Dwight Howard in return – you’re not – how can you move a 7-footer who hasn’t reached his prime yet? The other option would be to try and get Deron Williams in a sign-and-trade, but then your only big man is Gasol, and considering he’s underperformed in back-to-back 2nd round playoff series, and the West has eight of the Top 11 (LA included) rebounding teams in the NBA, that’s a risky proposition.
The more sensible move is to trade Pau Gasol, which is what the Lakers attempted in the preseason, before David Stern stepped in. The Lakers had all but shipped Gasol to Houston, and there’s no reason to think they can’t do that again (for a package highlighted by oft-injured Kevin Martin and Luis Scola). That’s a popular choice – but I think the wrong one. I think the better move – as I stated earlier this season – is to trade Gasol to Philadelphia in exchange for some package involving Andre Iguodala.
1) Iguodala gives Kobe a huge help defending on the wing. Along with Metta World Peace, the Lakers would have two very strong defenders on the wing to defend the likes of Durant/Westbrook/Harden/Rudy Gay in the West.
2) Kobe no longer has to worry about defending a scorer on the wing, which his aging body will appreciate.
3) Iguodala is coming off his best 3-point shooting as a pro: 39 percent. Imagine how many more open looks he’ll get playing with Bynum and Kobe. A crunch-time lineup of Bynum, Jordan Hill, World Peace, Iguodala and Kobe would be defensively sound. Worried about the lack of a point guard? Iguodala averaged 5.5 assists per game, and yes, Steve Nash is still on the market (if he’s willing to take less money to play for the Lakers, that is).
4) The trade works for Philly, too. The offense would run through Gasol, and he’s surrounded by young talent in Holiday, Williams and Turner.
Another option: Send Gasol to Atlanta for Josh Smith. The Hawks could use a post presence alongside Horford, and dealing Smith clears the way for Marvin Williams, has seen his minutes dwindle in recent years (34 from 07-09; 26 this season). A Bynum-Smith tandem blocks plenty of shots.
Oh, and you fire Mike Brown and replace him with … Stan Van Gundy?

I dunno, man. I can’t agree with you here. Iggy is 28. Gasol is 32. Why would you trade your best player in his prime who has learned to play exceptional defense under Doug Collins for a past his prime center who was never all that great defensively to begin with?
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:34 PM
I like it, but is iggy enough? They have to get a starting pg as well, and Nash ain’t coming to LA.
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:35 PM
Is Brand a free agent this year?
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:35 PM
No it wouldn’t.
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:36 PM
My favorite player is Kobe Bryant
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:37 PM
Iggy for Pau, straight up?
No. I don’t think so.
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:40 PM
Philly has like 35 swingmen. If I were Philly I’d take Pau for Iggy
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:41 PM
Wouldn’t the Lakers be on the hook for like $13.5M in salary if they fired Mike Brown, too?
I would have to think that solution number one for LA is to amnesty that awful Ron Artest contract. He can’t be traded.
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:41 PM
+ 1 LeBron blocking the ball to hard.
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:41 PM
Do Kobe, Iguodala and MWP play at the same time? If not this makes no sense. If so, going without a PG is… bold? Or is MWP being moved to the bench? Also, against the Thunder’s crunch time line-up, Kobe would have to guard one of Westbrook/Harden/Durant still.
Also, Philly isn’t trading Iguodala for an older more expensive guy in Gasol.
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:41 PM
The Houston proposal would be the best one. You just don’t know if Iggy can handle the Bestern Conference and you don’t want to add yet another headcase in Josh Smith.
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:41 PM
0% chance a Doug Collins-coached team would ever run its offense through the post. None.
This is a deal that I probably would have been on board with a year ago…but no more. Would weaken the 76ers significantly IMO. And I also think it doesn’t do the Lakers any favors either. Would cause them to rely on much more offense from Bynum…and I don’t think that’s a good thing.
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:41 PM
I dunno. Why would Philly give up their best player, who is 28 and is owed $40 million over the next 3 years, in exchange for a 32 year old who is clearly on the decline and is owed $38 million over the next 2?
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:42 PM
Mine is Steph Curry. But if he can’t get healthy, I think Harden or Paul George will take that spot.
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:43 PM
yeah iggy for pau works for me and if you amnesty metta you can go get a pointguard,i think a trade with houston would be for lowry
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:44 PM
So at right point near the three-point line? I’m pretty sure Pau doesn’t go inside there anymore.
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:45 PM
Anyone but Josh Smith……it would only take about half a game for Kobe to be forever pissed at the headcase 3 point shooting Smith
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:45 PM

May 22nd, 2012 at 2:46 PM
Such a well run league.
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:47 PM
You obviously missed it: despite logging exactly 0 minutes at PG, he averaged 5.5 assists, which is the lone indicator for ones capacity to play PG. So after 7 years in the league, he is going to learn a new position. Or, they are going to break the salary cap rules and sign Nash.
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:47 PM
Another option: Send Gasol to Atlanta for Josh Smith….A Bynum-Smith tandem blocks plenty of shots.
Team Headcase right therrrr. Should we go bring back Kwame while we’re at it McTibbles?
Why is Mike Brown’s head already on the chopping block? If the Lakers could close, this series would be 3-2 right now heading back to L.A. Can’t fault Coach for his guys literally giving game away in the final minutes.
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:47 PM
Just get rid of Mike Brown through any means.
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:48 PM
i can’t remember if i thought mike brown was gonna suck in LA or if i was playing devil’s advocado at the time and tried to talk myself into thinking he’d be ok.
in any event…dude just can’t handle players well.
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:49 PM
Mike Brown does a very good Art Shell Face impression
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:50 PM
Worked for Scottie Pippen and Ron Harper in the triangle.
/wouldn’t work here.
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:53 PM
No idea why any of these teams would do this, but I had fun.
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:55 PM
Serious question, but why didnt the Lakers & Mike Brown run some sort of Triangle variation as an offense since they’ve been running it for almost 10 years straight?
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:55 PM
Oh, and you fire Mike Brown and replace him with … Stan Van Gundy?
Yep.
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:56 PM
mike brown’s favorite activity as a child was smashing square pegs into round holes.
/his wife nods and shakes her head disappointingly
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:56 PM
He has an Early Termination Option this offseason. Meaning: he can terminate the last year of his deal, which is over $18 million.
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:57 PM
Count – you’ve got it all wrong – Bynum would take Josh Smith under his wing and mentor him, like Robinson did with Duncan. It’d be great!
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:57 PM
mike brown tried to kill five hookers with kindness.
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:57 PM
Even better
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:58 PM
Because Mike Brown has no experience running the triangle.
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:58 PM
Their offense was a mirror image to Lebron in Cleveland…
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:58 PM
Rockets are landing D Howard, not Pau.
According to sources at clutchfans.com
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:58 PM
Now I am just screwing around, but if teams want to clean house…
May 22nd, 2012 at 2:59 PM
Meaning: He’s not getting 18M from anyone else in the league, so he’ll be back.
May 22nd, 2012 at 3:00 PM
Looks like theCount beat me to it.
May 22nd, 2012 at 3:00 PM
I get that its complex but you would think he would use what they already knew from their previous experience with Jackson and go from there.
May 22nd, 2012 at 3:03 PM
Nah, he was too impressed with what he saw from Rich Rod at Michigan.
May 22nd, 2012 at 3:03 PM
Because it worked so well last year.
May 22nd, 2012 at 3:04 PM
i love that picture…
MB: PAU! PAU! THIS ISN’T UNIVERSIDAD…YOU CAN’T WEAR A T-SHIRT UNDER YOUR JERSEY.
Pau: i will be racist towards that man. he looks basque.
May 22nd, 2012 at 3:06 PM
That’d be a helluva deal for the Lakers.
Marvin Williams has seen his minutes dwindle in recent years because he’s not very good. Don’t let the fact that he was the #2 overall pick in the 2005 draft fool you. He’s nothing more than a marginal role player. The Hawks are basically stuck with him due to his contract.
May 22nd, 2012 at 3:06 PM
I get that its complex but you would think he would use what they already knew from their previous experience with Jackson and go from there.
Makes no sense…you don’t bring in a new coaching staff and then continue with the old staff’s system. The triangle architect has left the building for good.
May 22nd, 2012 at 3:08 PM
If Philly makes that deal then they’re putting all their front court eggs in the hands of a 33-year old (Brand) and a 32-year old (Gasol). Don’t see how that makes things better for them when next season we’re back to 82 games.
Thing is there is not too many moves to be made out there. Houston makes the most sense because they want Gasol but Scola/Martin isn’t really the kind of move to get the Lakers back to the Finals.
May 22nd, 2012 at 3:08 PM
Yet…
May 22nd, 2012 at 3:08 PM
I mean, I guess you did, along with about 6 other “predictions”:
May 22nd, 2012 at 3:08 PM
Not even Marvin Williams thinks this is a good idea.
May 22nd, 2012 at 3:11 PM
LOL, is this really that surprising?
May 22nd, 2012 at 3:11 PM
Nice
May 22nd, 2012 at 3:12 PM
That would actually be a good trade for both Orlando and LA I think, but I just don’t see what Houston gets out of it.
May 22nd, 2012 at 3:16 PM
Not really true at all. They ran a shit ton of high post triangle in the series..then, as even Phil’s teams did late in games, they went to iso superstar NBA play. If you’re firing Mike Brown for that, better be prepared to fire everyone (including Doc Rivers)
May 22nd, 2012 at 3:22 PM
prepared? shit, im looking forward to it.
May 22nd, 2012 at 3:22 PM
So did I miss the post where Oklahoma City is now a shithole because they had 8 shootings in their parking lot of their arena yesterday?
May 22nd, 2012 at 3:24 PM
philly would put turner on iggys spot and pau is an upgrade over spencer hawes..iggy can take metta’s amnesty spot and lakers would have some cap space to go for a decent pg (nash/andre miller/jameer).
May 22nd, 2012 at 3:24 PM
Is there a UFA that the Lakers could target? Trade Pau to a team with cap space, then take that space & sign the UFA(s).
May 22nd, 2012 at 3:25 PM
So you’ve basically turned into Skip Bayless, letting the stats speak louder than his actions. How can you keep a player that so very obviously quits in the playoffs–he was an absolute no show for the last three quarters of basketball–when you can trade him for, oh, I don’t know, think of a package from Minnesota or New Jersey Brooklyn…
Bynum may have talent, but as of the now, the total package is garbage.
May 22nd, 2012 at 3:25 PM
/small market’d
May 22nd, 2012 at 3:26 PM
Demanding every last penny you can get (and threatening to sign with the Clips) is far more manly and clutch than taking slightly less so you can have a better team.
You dont want Iggy shooting 3′s, that 39% is deceivingly high.
May 22nd, 2012 at 3:26 PM
It was already a shithole because it’s Oklahoma City.
May 22nd, 2012 at 3:27 PM
Holy crap, Laker’s salary for 2012-2013 is ~$63 million before they pick up Bynums $16 million option (also, Sessons has a $4 million player option).
May 22nd, 2012 at 3:27 PM
Did I miss the post when it was decided that Oklahoma City wasn’t already a shithole?
May 22nd, 2012 at 3:27 PM
It was mentioned in Ballin. Also lol at the idea OKC is now a shithole.
May 22nd, 2012 at 3:28 PM
goddamn it
May 22nd, 2012 at 3:29 PM
I’m just bitching because if it happened in LA, that would be another big post.
May 22nd, 2012 at 3:30 PM
They are so far over the cap that even if they could do that, they would still be about 10M over the cap and unable to sign any UFA (beyond a midlevel exception guy).
May 22nd, 2012 at 3:31 PM
The soft-cap is incredibly confusing.
May 22nd, 2012 at 3:35 PM
In (incredibly) simple terms: If over the cap, can only sign your own players to new contracts. A few exceptions exist (most popular one allowing you to sign a player to a midlevel contract as long as you are under the luxury tax).
May 22nd, 2012 at 3:48 PM
good post
May 22nd, 2012 at 4:43 PM
Unload Pau. Extend Bynum. Get a PG. Clear out space for Lebron 2014. This is all the Lakers should do the next 24 months.
May 22nd, 2012 at 7:29 PM
Hiring Brown was mistake #1. Mistake #2 was Stern screwing the Lakers. Mistake #3 was not placating Lamar Odom. He’d have played better and been happier in L.A. Mistake #4 was trading Derek Fisher when it was entirely unnecessary. They got Sessions without Fisher’s trade. That ruined this season.
They can undo the first mistake quite easily. Fire Brown. He has no clue how to coach these players esp. the Lakers. Kobe & Fisher had won 5 titles, Gasol and others 2 and he’s going to “do it his way?” Seriously? Clue in. If you wanted to ruin a team I couldn’t think of a coach better suited to it than Brown on the Lakers.
I can’t see the Gasol Iguodala trade but if it did happen, it would be a great deal for the Lakers. I’d also try to get Bynum back in the fold. And I’d hire Shaw (as suggested on Twitter) as the coach (or possibly Rambis).
But, more than that, the Lakers need serious help on the bench. They have as bad a bench as anyone in the league – including the Heat (who were desperate to field a starting 5 a year ago).
Realistically, the Lakers have maybe one last shot if they get 1) A new coach; 2) A good player for Gasol; 3) some bench depth.
May 23rd, 2012 at 2:43 AM
If you actually look at the team as a whole and not just that starting lineup, you might realize what the Lakers need is a bench. Role players. Their bench didn’t do anything in the playoffs. Meanwhile, the Spurs, who are ancient, have a shot at a title. What differentiates them from the Lakers, who are considerably younger? A bench and great role players. You’d think if Mike Brown, who’s a Popovich disciple, had that, he’d be able to deliver similar results. But hey, blow up the Lakers! Andre Igoudala will solve all!
May 23rd, 2012 at 9:27 AM
Hiring Mike Brown was one of the worst decisions of the past year. A truly awful coach. Why break up the system that worked so well?
