Ballin’: The 76ers Couldn’t Stop Brandon Bass, Now Trail Boston 3-2
Oklahoma City 106, LA Lakers 90: OKC’s Big 3 of Westbrook, Durant and Harden totaled 70 points, and the Thunder advanced to face the Spurs in the Western Conference Finals. It’s probably knee-jerk, but Westbrook’s circus flip in the 3rd quarter might be The Moment of the playoffs so far. That’s two straight trips to the WCF for the Thunder, and two straight 2nd round exits for the Lakers. Kobe was heroic with 42 points, but he had zero assists. Andrew Bynum looked out of it early and finished with just 10 points and four rebounds in 34 ineffective minutes. Kobe didn’t hammer him in the postgame, though, like he did Gasol after game four. If this was Gasol’s final game as a Laker, it wasn’t a bad performance: 14 points, 16 rebounds, three blocks.
Since the Thunder/Spurs series doesn’t start until Sunday, no rush to make any guesses on the series. We’ll save it for later in the week. For now, Kobe on the future (fast-forward to 2:30 for a nice Pistons analogy):
After the game, as thousands of fans were walking to their cars, eight people were shot in downtown Oklahoma City near the arena. One was listed in critical condition this morning, and the rest were stable, according to the Oklahoman. Police said, “one person suffered blunt trauma, and that person was a pregnant woman.” Two arrests were made.
Boston 101, Philadelphia 85: The 76ers played a nearly flawless 1st half, but it all fell apart in the 3rd quarter, when they were outscored by Brandon Bass, 18-16. Rondo was Rondo – 13 points, 14 assists – and Boston made more fouls shots (26) than Philly attempted (16). The 76ers had turnover issues during the pivotal 3rd quarter, and permitted a 14-2 run that gave Boston control it never relinquished. So do the Celtics (up 3-2) have a better chance against the Heat or Pacers? One could probably argue Boston might give the Bosh-less Heat fits, but wouldn’t be Indiana.

Right in line with his career averages.
May 22nd, 2012 at 9:54 AM
He’s such a hero to take almost half of his team’s shots.
May 22nd, 2012 at 9:56 AM
It means he cares more than everyone else. He was heroic in yelling at his teammates after his misses as well.
May 22nd, 2012 at 9:59 AM
Of all the times to joyfully dog Kobe during his career, last night was not one of them…I’m sure he would have had some assists if someone else could hit a shot
May 22nd, 2012 at 9:59 AM
So we agree, passing is for pussies.
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:06 AM
How about Kobe with 4 dunks last night? Not one of James Hardins’ best defensive efforts.
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:06 AM
Really? Not really even sure what “The Moment” means, but wouldn’t either of Durant’s game winners rank above this?
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:07 AM
No video of Kobe’s baseline dunk?
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:10 AM

well i guess it beats quitting or being non existent.
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:10 AM
Kobe practices what he preaches. You cant go dogging Lebron at the ASG for passing the big shot and then go do the same.
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:13 AM
Hodor
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:14 AM
Damn. That’s a long ass break.
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:19 AM
Oh look, another one of Kobe’s lakers elimination game where it was not close in the 4th. An annual tradition.
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:23 AM
So SvG to the Lakers now?
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:25 AM
Kobe attempted 34 shots in the 4th quarters of this series. Only 2 of those attempts were inside of 5 feet. That is insane.
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:29 AM
One of them last night. It’s not surprising really. Lakers have no other perimeter threats at all (which is why I said last year they needed to get rid of one of their bigs b/c their so-called “advantage” was a clear weakness to me…couldn’t guard anyone and neither are dominant rebounders). So Kobe had to shoulder the perimeter load at 33 with all the minutes he’s logged, with the Thunder throwing Sefalosha, Hardin and then capping things off with Durant in fourth quarters…who Kobe can’t shoot over and is just as quick at this stage of his career, then it all makes clear sense why he would struggle late in games).
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:31 AM
I said this last night, but Lakers need to get rid of of Gasol – get two solid role players in exchange for his 19 million dollar contract (one wing, one power forward, pray that Bynum finally understands being a professional, and hope that Sessions comes back with more of a transition type team…b/c if he picks up his player option, they need to run. He’s horrendous in the half court on both ends. If he declines his option, I don’t know what options at the point they can get for their cap number.
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:32 AM

Maybe it’s time to trade Pau to…Memphis???
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:34 AM
Dim Sum
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:34 AM
Kobe hate is strong in here today. Ridiculous.
Outside of Bryant, nobody on that team had the balls or desire for the moment last night.
Bynum couldn’t stay out of foul trouble (although No. 3 was laughable) and Gasol was better than the previous game, but he is what he is. Time to send him on his way.
Ron Artest might become a serial killer after his playing career. That is a dangerously insane human being.
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:35 AM
Also, to gg – glad to see you’re back up & “in the green”. Stay well, ma’am.
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:35 AM
How much trade value does Pau have left with $19M for 2 more years?
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:37 AM
Love the multiple paragraphs and clips for the Thunder/Lakers and then the half-hearted, stick-it-at-the-end post about the Celtics win. Bitter?
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:37 AM
Also, it was pushing midnight and I was somehow still awake during Westbrook’s And 1, yet I jumped off my damn couch. That was cool.
I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a player more terrified of an opponent as Sessions was of Westbrook. He got punked this series.
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:37 AM
*takes long deep breath*
Smells like…victory.
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:39 AM
Ron Artest might become a serial killer after his playing career. That is a dangerously insane human being.
IMHO, when I watch “Indiana Ron” play, he has the dexterity/fine motor skill to be an exceptional player. He spends too much time trying to prove how tough he is, instead of helping his team win.
As a result, his skill level is deteriorating.
Still, I’d want him watching my back if I was out in the ‘hood after midnight.
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:40 AM
Kobe averaged about 28 this season, I think if you add up every guard that played for the Lakers this year other than him it’s about 29ppg. Solid supporting cast they’ve built there.
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:40 AM
Feel free to add your thoughts, chief.
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:40 AM
The Cavs should trade their #1 from the Lakers back to the Lakers for Pau. They have mad cap room.
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:42 AM
I do think it’s interesting that the Kobe-era Lakers always seem to go down hard when they go out. Dallas, Boston in ’08 NBA Finals, Phoenix series…just seems like they rollover. Not blaming Kobe or anything here, but interesting trend.
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:43 AM
Good lord, why?
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:44 AM
If Bynum quit on Phil Jackson and Mike Brown, what makes anyone think he’ll be a reliable asset to any other coach? He’s a big immature bitch who quits on his team when they get behind.
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:45 AM
the only choice is to trade Bynum if you want to get the best value in return.
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:47 AM
Kobe is the Tony Romo of the NBA
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:48 AM
how so?
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:48 AM
With Kobe in the twilight of his career, I don’t think you want to do this unless you’re getting some serious star power in return.
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:49 AM
I’m also curious.
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:49 AM
Smells like…victory.
indeed. might be time to cash in as my win streak over the last few days cannot last
/so say the gods of gambling
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:51 AM
To be fair, Kobe’s never really played with any other type of wing/perimeter threat in his career, and I don’t think this is because the Lakers front office hasn’t tried to find one (see: Caron Butler). Just hasn’t happened but I think they’ve intetionally structured the team that way.
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:51 AM
They have mad cap room.
mole it makes more sense if you take the space out from between the mad and the cap
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:51 AM
He’s a big immature bitch who quits on his team when they get behind.
Yep. He’ll have his big games but what you see is what you get.
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:52 AM
I don’t like Kobe, but even I wouldn’t put this comparison on him. Yikes.
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:52 AM
Not blaming Kobe or anything here, but interesting trend.
maybe he never punched enough teaamates like an mj
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:53 AM
Well, that’s implied by most value. Bynum just isn’t reliable enough (in the head) to commit a long-term deal.
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:57 AM
is d-ho no longer a lakers option?
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:57 AM
No.
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:58 AM
True. Just seems this cast was worse than ever. I guess Fish fading into nothingness kind of played a big ass part in that.
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:58 AM
Do you think Bynum will ever be able to lead a team and stay healthy? Think at this point, given his injury history, this is likely the best / most optimal time to trade him.
May 22nd, 2012 at 10:59 AM
Like I said over the weekend, Kupchak deserves a huge amount of blame for constructing this roster
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:00 AM
Tony Romo doesn’t quit on his team, he just sucks. Big fucking difference.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:00 AM
I felt like making an outlandishly stupid statement.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:00 AM
and nobody really bit, either
I’ll take the blame.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:01 AM
They were pretty limited cap-wise and let’s be honest, he did try to make a move that would have had a huge impact but was nixed by the Commish.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:02 AM
Although this statement is all sorts of fail, I’ll give you points for courage.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:06 AM
Tracy McGrady was the Tony Romo of the NBA
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:06 AM
He was healthy this season and I think you’re expecting a lot out of 24 year old that’s had to play his entire career with Kobe to this point.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:08 AM
If the Lakers really wanted to improve their future (both short and long-term), they’d trade Kobe.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:09 AM
Put a hat on one of them and a gossip girl actress on the other and you could work here.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:11 AM
not with that contract
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:12 AM
Except I am pretty sure he has a no-trade clause in his contract where he would have to approve of the trade to make it happen
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:13 AM
Not as farfetched as that might seem, but don’t you think they could still win a title with Kobe as a no. 2 in a few years with the right makeup? Kobe didn’t look old in these playoffs with the exception of his legs in fourth quarters. Why close the window completely by trading him?
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:15 AM
lol @ Kobe “quitting” in any way yesterday. Again, bunch of people who only watch highlights in here talking nonsense. The game was lost at the start of the 4th when Mike Brown sat Kobe while Durant. WB, and Harden were on the floor.
Its fun to drive the “Kobe’s teams always quit!” narrative, but it was a 5 point game that turned into a 14 point game with him on the bench for 3 minutes.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:16 AM
So Bynum stayed healthy for one out of four seasons? Seems like something I should assume will be the norm going forward then.
I don’t think playing with Kobe has anything to do with Bynum’s a) injury history, and b) mental makeup (spotty at best).
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:16 AM
And I actually agree that the best thing for the Lakers to do would be to either amnesty Kobe or Pau. They won’t do anything with Kobe because he still produces, however.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:17 AM
I think you’re the only person who said that Kobe quit yesterday so far in this thread.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:18 AM
I just realized I misread the talk. It was about Bynum.
My bad.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:19 AM
Laughable how Mike Brown started the 4th quarter last night. You would have thought OKC was the one playing for their playoff lives. OKC has Westbrook, Durant, and Harden out there and LA sits Kobe (the only one who could score) for Devin Ebanks, Ramon Sessions, MWP, and the bigs. OKC scores 5 quick after Ebanks misses a jumper, he takes a TO and STILL leaves Kobe on the bench. Sessions offensive foul, Durant 3, ball game.
Apparently Mike Brown didn’t understand that if the Lakers lose last night the season is over. Horrible.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:20 AM
I now understand the plights of Cleveland fans in 2008-2010.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:22 AM
Kobe was still a -14 in the plus/minus for the game.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:22 AM
So its not all LeBrons fault? Mike Brown is a chump, he cant put together anything resembling an offense and his in game “adjustments” are laughable.
At some point next year Kobe will choke or punch him.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:23 AM
Maybe, but that’s assuming Kobe would accept a #2 role. And as long as OKC is able to keep this core together, I don’t think they’re getting past them. The Clippers are likely to improve each year as well.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:25 AM
That was ridiculous. Brown can’t take enough heat for that as far as I’m concerned. Also Kobe played the same # minutes as Ramon Sessions.
They were in that game…and then they weren’t.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:25 AM
In Game 4, Kobe was gassed at the end. Mike Brown did the right thing resting him at the beginning of the 4th. OKC was just too good, too fast. No shame in that.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:26 AM
He’d go out like AI before he’d willingly accept a #2 role.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:26 AM
That’s Coach of the Year winner Mike Brown you all are talking about, HOW FUCKING DARE YOU.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:27 AM
I now understand the plights of Cleveland fans in 2008-2010.
i know, they didn’t deserve lebron
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:28 AM
He was the only one that was giving a fuck. Well, him and MWP. Gasol and Bynum combined to suck together in the 2nd half, despite plenty of touches. When the game turned into a semi-blowout is when Kobe started chucking to save the season.
I don’t blame Lebron for losing, I get annoyed with him for being passive like he was in 2010 (for a crucial game), and throughout last year’s Finals. Its just wierd to see. But I think he’s over that this year.
With that being said, Mike Brown is one of the worst in game adjustment coaches I’ve ever seen. In fact, even his game-to-game adjustments in the Denver series were horrible compared to Karl’s. One of the reasons Pau sucked this year was Brown’s inability to properly utilize him to his strengths…I mean, he essentially turned a great post threat into a stretch PF who got about 3 looks in the post all game.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:29 AM
It was fine to rest him, but when the game swings from 5 points to 11 off 3 pointers and a clear momentum swing, you fucking take a time out and put Kobe back in.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:30 AM
How do the basketball stat guys look at plus/minus? Is it frowned upon as being useful like in hockey? Never really started looking at that until I had an interest in watching the Clippers fail.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:31 AM
This is, and always will be, true. Cleveland deserves nothing good.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:31 AM
Can’t defend Mike Brown sitting Kobe. But will defend Mike Brown here: He’s a defensive coach who was asked to employ his system with two slowish 7-footers, a 33 year old star who’s lost a step, Meta who is a football player and came into the season at 275…and Ramon Sessions mid-year, who is horrendous in the half-court. Never mind the lack of a pre-season camp
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:32 AM
Pau and Bynum have always struggled fitting together on the floor at the same time. The Lakers seriously missed Odom’s versatility.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:32 AM
Its not like his offense was any better with the Cavs. Lebron isolations galore!
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:34 AM
Changes daily depending on how much a given +- supports my biased positions.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:34 AM
I think for individual players it can be a bit unreliable, but I think you can get a lot of insight for using it to look at the performance of particular 5-man units over the course of a handful of games, a whole season, etc.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:36 AM
I’m not really into APBRmetrics, but I think those guys love to use Adjusted Plus Minus (over a large sample obviously, not a single game) as a key tool in judging players.
Unfortunately I don’t really know what the “adjusted” in Adjusted Plus/Minus adjusts for…hopefully opponents and teammates with you on the floor.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:36 AM
This
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:38 AM
Mario Chalmers had a better +/- than LeBron on Sunday.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:42 AM
I think Pau is out, but if you really want to give it one more go with Kobe you trade Bynum, way more value in the league but I dont think you win with a guy like that playing such a prominent role.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:44 AM
FWIW: The top 8 in Plus/Minus this year: Lebron, Parker, Chalmers, Bosh, Deng, Westbrook, Durant, Harden.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:45 AM
Probably had Game 4 in his mind when Kobe checked in with an 11 point lead in the 4th, went 2-10, and they lost by 3. Also, everyone is talking about how tired Kobe must be having to do everything, yet people want him to play the entire second half.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:46 AM
you like the +/- stat?
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:51 AM
I like it as a piece of evidence, but not to draw wholesale conclusions from it. The 5-man unit +/- is really good and I think can be really informative.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:53 AM
Not particularly, but I think it’s useful if taken in the proper context. It’s hard to quantify things like playing defense, hustling back, setting screens, stopping offensive flow, etc. +/- doesn’t do this, per se, but perhaps it gives some insight into who’s adept in some of these areas.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:54 AM
All top 2 seeds. +/- reflects your teammates as well as your own skills.
Someone on ESPN said that lineups with Westie-Harden-Durant were +47 in the Lakers series. That to me is meaningful.
May 22nd, 2012 at 11:57 AM
think for individual players it can be a bit unreliable, but I think you can get a lot of insight for using it to look at the performance of particular 5-man units over the course of a handful of games, a whole season, etc.
Nailed it.
You’ll get the scrubby guy who ends up on a good rotation with a good +/- just like hockey, but its helpful.
I think that some teams have elevated to privated sabremetric and actual defensive data. I think a company was testing lasering players to test where they were on plays, etc to see what plays they were at fault and truly deserved a +/-. Fans won’t ever get this data, like the NFL 22-man film.
May 22nd, 2012 at 12:04 PM
He left Gasol out there on an island. There’s a difference between a guy being able to hit a jump shot and a jump shooter. Just because Gasol has the ability to hit a jump shot doesn’t means he’s a shooter. Dirk is a shooter, Pau isn’t. The Lakers spent too much time with Bynum as the featured low post player when Gasol was the better option. Bynum is mechanical and is bothered by quickness, length, and strength.
May 22nd, 2012 at 12:15 PM
This is where I think the most value of plus/minus exists, especially when looking at mutiple games against the same opponent.
Agree here completely – while Bynum is really skilled, it always looks awkward when he makes a lot of hist post moves.
If the Lakers want to make a go of it with Kobe still (and I think that they can), they should probably deal Bynum (most value) to see what they can get. You can still win with Gasol on the low block. Though the Limas of the world want to crucify Pau, if the Lakers had another perimeter player / wing-type player (Odom?) they would have still been formidable.
May 22nd, 2012 at 12:31 PM
I don’t hate Pau, but people tried to make it seem like he carried Kobe to a pair of titles. He was very good at times, and very mediocre during others.
