Mad Men Recap: “The Christmas Waltz,” Hare Krishna, And the Jaguar XKE
“The Christmas Waltz” pares down Christmas to what it perceives to its core: cheap imagery, vapid sentiment and loneliness. The singer views the scene from the outside looking in. The surroundings, intended to spark inward cheer, are just surroundings. There’s no romance. There’s no depth. Sort of like an impressionist painting, the song (“and this song of mine in three-quarter time”) acknowledges its own artificiality. This episode, similarly, deals with appearances and deception.
Harry, it turns out, does more than inhale burgers, switch offices and want to go a few rounds with Megan. He meets up with the long lost Paul Kinsey who, since being jettisoned during the great escape, has hit rock bottom and becomes a hare krishna.
Hare Krishna is about removing illusions and materialism to embrace the true love of god. Paul thinks he’s experiencing the true love of a female member of the movement, “Lakshmi,” who looks much like Juliette Lewis. In a twist, she’s more cynical of a mad man then the Mad Men. She seduces Harry and leads Paul on to keep him in the movement, because he’s their “best closer.” Instead of escaping his former life, Paul is serving a new master with a shaved head.
Harry feels bad for Paul. He’s compassionate, though not virtuous, sleeping with Lakshmi with the most flimsy of assurances. He faces the choice to be honest with Paul or let him delude himself. He encourages him about the screenplay and gives him $500 and a ticket to Los Angeles to go pursue his dream.
Lane is having tax problems. Resolving his own identity, caught between Britain and America, has been nebulous. His legal status reflects this as well, with the UK government claiming he owes back taxes and wanting to “make an example of him.” Instead of confronting the issue and being honest with those around him, Lane turns to embezzlement.
He obtains a credit line on false pretenses, tells everyone it is a surplus and suggests issuing bonuses to cover his tracks. He forges Don’s signature on a check to pay off the person helping him. Unfortunately, Mohawk Airlines suspends advertising, causing the partners to decline accepting bonuses. He also tells his wife he is landing the Jaguar account, to convince her not to go back to Britain. Lane is left in a sticky wicket, unless they land the Jaguar account and the cash starts rolling in?
Joan also returns this episode. She compensates for her personal life by never letting her guard down at work, subtly manipulating people. Being served with her divorce papers pierces through that shell. She reveals her true feelings about the secretary she subtly derided in an earlier episode and, uncharacteristically, flips out in the middle of the office. Don comes to her rescue, dragging her out of the office as his faux wife to go test drive a Jaguar and have drinks. She goes along with the ruse though remains honest. They do have four kids, altogether.
The chemistry between Don and Joan is infectious. Like Prince’s guitar solos, that pure brilliance has to be restrained and meted out sparingly lest it kill everything surrounding it. Both characters truly grasp the bullshit of it all and manipulate their way through every social interaction. Only with each other do they recognize a peer and let their guard down. Note Joan’s subtle disgust with a backhanded comment every time Don’s marriage to Megan gets brought up.
Don, essentially, encourages Joan to keep playing the game. He takes off drunk in an exquisite Jaguar XKE [warning: car porn] he does not crash to let her dance with a guy at the bar. Don thought she was dating “Ali Khan” once. By thoughtfully sending flowers, he gives her the chance to let others think so. Perhaps through that conversation and the fights with Megan over the play criticizing advertising and him being late for dinner – “You loved it before you me” – Don resolves to be Don Draper again (see rousing Jaguar speech) or to give the appearance of it.

That actress was brilliantly cast. She was just….unsettling.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:12 PM
Don will cheat on Megan in the next 2 episodes. I have been getting that feeling a little bit more since she left the company.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:13 PM
Pete Campbell’s quest for gravitas continued….he continues to get no love from anyone at that firm despite his business successes.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:13 PM
Watching Don slowly turn Megan bitter might explain a bit of how the current Betty came to be
May 21st, 2012 at 2:14 PM
Poor Paul. With that unfortunate haircut, he looked a lot like Private Pyle from Full Metal Jacket. I wonder what Sal has been up to these past few years.

That episode was Don Draper porn for me. Rescuing Joan when she’s distraught, offering her his coat, giving the guy $6000 for the car, the interaction in the bar between him and Joan, and sending her flowers. I was completely jealous.

I think he’s bored and now that this Jaguar thing has come up, I think he’s feeling energized and will get back to doing “Don Draper” things.
That includes plowing through bottles of Canadian Club and random strange.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:17 PM
Lakshmi telling Harry “you can have me like this” while bending over the desk and looking at him seductively was fuckin hot.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:17 PM
I enjoyed that Don told her that he never hit on her because she scared the shit out of him. That was a pretty cool moment, I thought.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:18 PM
Disagree. Don is WAY more present in his relationship with Megan than he ever was with Betty. I think Megan’s childish temper tantrums and immature behavior will be the death of that relationship. Don could have easily had Joan last night but even in a drunken stupor he had the sense not to cheat.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:19 PM
It’s still early compared to where his marriage was when the series started…give him time
May 21st, 2012 at 2:20 PM
Don’s already plowed Joan a few times. Book it.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:21 PM
I was hoping she’d hug the beam, put it to a worthwhile use for once (other than structural support I guess)
May 21st, 2012 at 2:21 PM
One of the show’s strongest themes – wanting something but only for a brief time and then moving onto something else because you’re bored, not happy or endlessly desirous – was on full display in this episode.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:21 PM
Yup, I thought she was giving him the “all clear”…..
May 21st, 2012 at 2:22 PM
Don is trying to do the right things with Megan, but I think it’s Megan outgrowing him.
I think this is different than what happened between Don and Betty. Betty is an emotional child compared to Megan.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:23 PM
Pete Campbell’s quest for gravitas continued….he continues to get no love from anyone at that firm despite his business successes.
I’m starting to wonder if Pete is going to keep flailing away like a fish caught on the beach. His need for validation is so transparent it almost makes him human.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:24 PM
That’s true but Don has been more honest with Megan than he ever was with Betty. And think about the influence Megan has had with Don especially when it comes to his relationship with Sally.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:25 PM
He’s definitely been a better husband and man with Megan, but I think the newness of it all has worn off. Her comment about him loving his job before ever loving her led to his Jaguar speech the following day, which was basically a way for him to envelop himself with work so that he could avoid the marriage.
Megan leaving SCDP really hurt Don. I think he feels a bit rejected and not in control. You can’t do that to a playboy, no matter how much he wants to accept her independence and happiness, because he will go out and get drunk and fuck women, and come home late.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:25 PM
Don could have easily had Joan last night but even in a drunken stupor he had the sense not to cheat.
Yup, I thought she was giving him the “all clear”…..
There was a hint of an attraction in the first episode this season when Lane describes Megan’s party for Don to Joan and Joan wistfully wishes that she could have seen Don blush.

Does his being a junior partner make it more difficult for him to leave? Seems like another firm might want someone with his business track record
May 21st, 2012 at 2:26 PM
My mom always tells the story of when she was looking to buy a new car, she went to a MG dealer that also had some Jags in the showroom. This was mid-70s, so not quite the vintage linked, but she couldn’t fathom paying $12,000 for a car.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:26 PM
I think Pete faceplanting earlier this season was a grand use of the pole. But it would’ve been freakin hilarious if she grabbed hold of it.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:27 PM
That’s true but Don has been more honest with Megan than he ever was with Betty. And think about the influence Megan has had with Don especially when it comes to his relationship with Sally.
Agree with this. Don really seems like he wants to get it right with Megan.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:27 PM
It’s Pete’s nature to be a drama queen. I don’t really see his actions that bad. It’s just part of his make-up. His parents were obviously idiots. I see a lot of what he does as just part of his make-up, not a result of his make-up. He’s just a self-loathing guy.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:27 PM
Don and Joan will continue to get teased simply because that’s what we all want.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:28 PM
Yet he had the clear opportunity last night to fuck Joan and went home instead. Don might be out of the honeymoon phase but he doesn’t need to use work as an excuse to get out of being with Megan. Megan used to work there and knows Don’s true self. If things are failing in their marriage I think there would be an honest conversation instead of Don’s usual out of fucking other chicks, drinking too much and working all the time.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:28 PM
Jarring.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:28 PM
Does his being a junior partner make it more difficult for him to leave? Seems like another firm might want someone with his business track record
Maybe. But Pete is so in need of Don’s attention that I can’t see him leaving even if he had the opportunity. Secretly I think Pete wants the firm to be named Draper Campbell.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:29 PM
Does his being a junior partner make it more difficult for him to leave? Seems like another firm might want someone with his business track record
Correct. He’s not leaving. He just needs Cooper and Sterling to die.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:29 PM
Don and Joan will continue to get teased simply because that’s what we all want.
I also agree with this. It’s too obvious to have them hook up, the audience is practically expecting it. Matthew Weiner will keep stringing us along but I think her and Roger have some sort of confrontation on their future coming up soon.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:30 PM
If they do get Jaguar, you can definitely see Pete putting it to the other partners to get them to make him a full partner. That would be interesting to watch….they’ve been dangling that senior partnership thing out there since they formed the company.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:34 PM
Did you think he and Joan could’ve hooked up? I got the feeling there was some sexual tension there, but that it wasn’t going to happen. I’m not sure she was ready for it. Regardless, I’m not sure he was trying to get laid by Joan.
I could see an honest conversation as well, but I think Megan’s hissy fit (or whatever you want to call it) shook him. It was very Betty like and I think that’s why he was so rah-rah with that Jaguar speech. He’s always been awesome at his job and the office has always been a refuge for him. Making a speech about spending long hours and weekends on an account seems like a sort of indirect response to he and Megan’s argument.

I thought these were connected as well. And his and Megan’s conversation about him liking work was interesting in that context as well.

do the older partners dismiss pete because, well, he’s pete? he sure is doing a hell of alot of the new business around there.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:39 PM
it’s quite plausible Megan will upgrade on Don if her acting takes off. She does not want to be bored.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:40 PM
I think that has something to do with it. And they are old(er), established white guys stuck in an earlier era. They’re the kings and trip on power and wealth, and no matter how good or worthy anyone below them is, that person will always be below them.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:41 PM
You don’t think Megan reminding Don about how much he loved work before he met her had anything to do with that speech he made? Don didn’t use work solely as an excuse to get away from Betty. He used drugs and other women as his escape from her.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:43 PM
I was really hoping this escalating feud between Pete and Roger was going to make Roger up his game. I really want Roger to get his mojo back if only so he can stick it to Pete.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:43 PM
Yep
May 21st, 2012 at 2:45 PM
do the older partners dismiss pete because, well, he’s pete? he sure is doing a hell of alot of the new business around there.
Cooper is just kind of there. He is scenery. I think he’s starting to realize that though and that’s why he wants to do the Monarch Wines deal between himself and Sterling. I think Cooper barely thinks about Pete.
Sterling puts out a vibe that he doesn’t give a shit about Pete, but it’s pretty obvious that he dislikes Pete because Pete doesn’t give him his due respect (or what Sterling feels like is his due respect). The jokes about Sterling getting drunk on Pearl Harbor day were pretty great.
Don appreciates Pete, but Don also doesn’t want to load too much praise on him because he, I think rightly, sees that Pete could easily become an even more self-satisfied prick, to the point where he might do something damaging to the firm. Also, Pete knows about Don’s identity and so Don wants to keep him close, but not so close that they are chummy.
Lane probably likes that Pete brings in business, but I think finds him to be a smarmy jackass (which is ironic since Lane is the king of smarmy in that office). Lane dislikes that Pete is so cocky.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:45 PM
I think their age and generational differences will get the best of them. I do think her growing apart from him in a way he doesn’t understand will trigger his self-destructive behavior.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:46 PM

It’s more of a generational divide IMO. Roger and Draper (ahem) and I presume Lane, had military service. Don (personally) came off a shithole farm. Bert lived through the depression. Pete came from safe wealthy envirionment. He doesn’t have their scar tissue so they apply the needle. They respect his acumen as by making him jr partner and such.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:47 PM

Interesting point. Megan does seem to inspire Don. But as Peggy noted earlier in the season, since Don is happy at home, it doesn’t seem like he’s trying as hard at work. Given that, I guess his speech and Megan’s conversation could be taken either way.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:48 PM
She might have empowered him while also making him realize that work is what he does best. It’s the best at anything he’ll ever be. Better than being a husband, father or man. Booze, drugs, women and late night were definitely an escape from reality. But if he’s trying to avoid those (at least as best as possible) then work is where he can hide.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:48 PM
They brought back the wrong guy. I wish that Sal would make an appearance. I really thought that they had a good storyline setup with him.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:49 PM
I would have agreed with that assessment in earlier seasons but not this year. If that were really the case why would Pete constantly try to kiss Don’s ass all the time? And Pete clearly brought up the identity issue at his dinner but no one even brought it up. Don’s not hiding that from anyone anymore, especially now that Anna is dead. Even Sally knows (albeit due to Betty being a cunt).
May 21st, 2012 at 2:51 PM
Damn, only three more episodes this season. At least, Breaking Bad comes back soon.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:51 PM

True, but I bet if Pete thought he could finally get Don’s attention by bringing the identity issue up once again, then he certainly would. Pete, with Don, is almost like a jilted admirer. Don is keeping his distance and only faintly praising him, but Pete keeps coming back for me, like for validation of who he is personally and professionally.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:52 PM
Pete keeps coming back for more. Not me.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:53 PM
Here’s the thing about Pete – he grew up rich, with presumably good parents, is successful, has a lovely wife and child, and home, yet he’s unhappy and unfulfilled. Why? Right now, he needs validation from the senior partners that he does a good job. When he gets that, he’ll find something else to make him unhappy. Why? Because that’s what Mad Fucking Men is about.
May 21st, 2012 at 2:55 PM
The only character completely unjaded by life is Bobby but that’s just because he works through his aggression by drawing pictures of whale murder
May 21st, 2012 at 2:56 PM
+1
May 21st, 2012 at 2:58 PM
Not that she was in this episode, but is Sally starting to remind anyone else in appearance of a young Drew Barrymore?

seems like roger is somewhat in limbo right now. he is not booking anything, but seems like he is close.

I keep wondering when, and for whom, that empty elevator shaft will come back into play. At first I was convinced it was Campbell until Pryce’s little embezzlement stunt and web of deceit.
