SEC and Big 12 Join Forces, Agree to Bowl Matchup

Savvy move by the SEC and Big 12: The two conferences have partnered up to create their own bowl game. With the 4-team playoff coming to college football soon, there’s a new pecking order in the postseason: The Playoff, the Big Ten/Pac-12 (Rose Bowl) and now, the SEC/Big 12 (likely the Cotton Bowl according to CBS Sports, which broke the story). Those will be the most lucrative postseason games, and it won’t be close.
Even if all four playoff participants are from the Big 12/Pac-12/SEC/Big Ten – for sake of argument, let’s say Oklahoma, USC, LSU & Michigan next year – guess what? The next two highest-paying bowl games will also involves teams from those two conferences (Oregon vs. Michigan State? … South Carolina vs. Texas?). And the SEC/Big 12 are calling the shots, too – the bowl game will be played Jan. 1 in Primetime. It’ll be a cash cow for the leagues. Sorry about your luck, Fiesta Bowl.
Which leads to the obvious questions: Hey Florida State, you still want to stay in the ACC? Hey Notre Dame, how long can you hold out? Because if those teams aren’t cracking the playoffs, they’re settling for a lower-tier bowl and passing up big postseason dollars.

Great. As if the SEC doesn’t have enough blowhards.

A 3 or 4 loss team ain’t making it into the top 4.

Sakerlina? wouldn’t bet on it. Arkansas is coming out like gang-busters this year. John L. Smith bitches.

No way they play this game at the actual Cotton Bowl. That place is a dump. The actual Cotton Bowl bowl game isn’t even played there anymore.

Texas-OU just re-upped to play there through at least 2020. The city of Dallas just approved renovations to the seating, restrooms, and the addition of air conditioned club boxes, etc.

CL Preview coming up today or tomorrow?

thats not a bad thing. that place sucks balls.

Agreed. I think the atmosphere of the State Fair is what keeps Texas-OU at the Cotton Bowl (well that and the recently approved renovations). But outside of the State Fair, that part of Dallas is a wasteland.

In fairness, that’s because Arlington sucks balls.
May 18th, 2012 at 4:47 PM
i believe that. his teams usually start out around 4-0. it’s what happens next that is kinda shitty

i actually hate that maxi pad looking place. from the big screen to the dipshit miller lite discotech in the endzone, i just thinks its a place to celebrate excess for the sake of excess.

Really surprised that this hadn’t been done before the whole BCS thing came about. I mean the Rose Bowl has been around forever and the other conferences had to have seen how big it was.

Yep and in that sense it is the ultimate expression of who Jerry Jones is and what his tenure as team owner has been like.

I haven’t been there, but you are honestly the first person that I have heard say that. what don’t you like about it?
May 18th, 2012 at 4:52 PM
you know all to well, which means I expect a bit of pity from you later this fall.

where do i start? the parking sucks, the food/beer/tickets are so damn expensive, the asshole dancegirls pole dancing above the endzone (not the cb cheerleaders), the big screen tv, the seating. its all a big distraction from the actual game on the field. stay home and have a better time.
the only thing i like is the cheerleaders and the concourse because its so big.
May 18th, 2012 at 4:56 PM
here’s what to expect. 4-0 start, frustrating 2 or 3 straight losses, followed by a “WHERE THE FUCK DID THAT AWESOME GAME COME FROM!!! WE’RE BACK IN IT!!!!!” then lose the rest.

Fried bubblegum. Fried beer. Fried butter. Chicken-fried bacon.
Big Tex approves.

MP III, makes sense. I wanted to go the past couple years since Arkansas has played at least once a year there, but for many of the reasons you stated, I never went.

if someone gave you free tickets and a close parking pass, you should go just to do it. but you wont be back.

You know what I don’t hate? Naked Rhian Sugden.
NSFW of course.

so, buy a case of whiskey now then, got it.
honestly though, John L. is pretty much just a figure head coach this year. in reality I doubt he has much say in anything, but it won’t stop me from putting the blame squarely on him should they lose a game they shouldn’t.

Went to the Jerrah Dome in 2009 to see U2.
The stadium was nice and shiny. But I’m glad I stayed at a rat trap hotel within walking distance.
Wouldn’t mind seeing a football game there someday. Even with all the comment hate.

Not too shabby for a conference left for dead twice in the past two years. As the playoff format solidifies you have to wonder if Notre Dame finally makes the jump. And if it does, the Big 12 seems as credible a landing place as any, especially if FSU comes on board.
It’s still not likely but it’s nowhere near the laughable idea it was even six months ago.

This is a combination of speculation and some good info, but I think this SEC/Big XII championship game is way more important than it appears…especially in the realignment matrix. It gives the SEC and Big XII the same type of agreement/game that the PAC 14 and Big Ten have, but it has to be much more than that.
It sounds like there are many things working behind the scenes on realignment. College football is headed for four super conferences, and is probably headed there very fast. Three conferences were already set to take three of the four spots: Big Ten, PAC-14 and SEC. That left the Big XII and ACC to battle for the last spot.
The Big XII was on death’s doorstep not long ago, but they have been moving feverishly to add quality programs. At the same time, the SEC has been wanting to add UNC for a very long time in addition to a Virginia school. It expands the footprint significantly to pull in more TVs and takes in the remainder of the South.
There is only one spot left in the four super conferences. I’d say the Big XII is likely now the fourth conference in the four superconferences. Am I over-stating the importance of the SEC/Big XII championship game? Maybe, but maybe not. What if the SEC and Big XII got together to destabilize the ACC to both get what they want? The SEC gets UNC and VTech. The Big XII gets FSU and Clemson and picks off other programs like Miami, NC State, Louisville and Cincinnati. The Big Ten picks up ND, Virginia, Syracuse and BC…something along those lines. Duke may be in there somewhere.
Think that is too much of a conspiracy theory? Let’s put it this way. Mike Slive doesn’t agree to something like a championship game with the conference that has members that threatened to sue him and the SEC several months ago without getting something big in return. I could be way off on this, but let’s see what happens over the next year.
