High School Golfer Misses 4-Peat in State Championship After Signing Incorrect Scorecard
Golf is a cruel sport. It’s a great way to ruin a beautiful day and all that. You wouldn’t begrudge Churchill (Oregon) High School senior Caroline Inglis if she wanted to take some time off from the devil sport after what happened to her earlier this week at the OSAA Class 5A girls tournament. From The Oregonian:
Inglis was disqualified after her final round for signing an incorrect scorecard. She shot a 3-under-par 69 at Trysting Tree Golf Club and would have finished at 2 under and won by nine shots.
Shortly after turning in her card, someone pointed out that it was incorrect. Inglis ran inside and turned herself in. Her reward? Disqualification. Luckily, she has three other state titles.
The disqualification cost Inglis the opportunity to become first golfer — boy or girl — to win a fourth consecutive title. Inglis had burst onto the state scene in 2009 at Trysting Tree. Having played the sport for just two years, she finished at 16 over and won.
Inglis now has nothing left to look forward to besides playing golf at the University of Oregon. Hopefully, she’ll keep a closer eye on her scorecard in college. [Oregon Live]

It always made more sense to me that, if you signed an incorrect scorecard and gave yourself a better score on a hole, that you should be assessed a two stroke penalty, but if you signed an incorrect scorecard because your score was worse on a hole, but even with that worse score you would still finish in x place, you’d get to stay in x place. Does that make sense?
