Former FSU Linebacker, BOT Member Derrick Brooks Claims Big 12 Approached Florida State
The Florida State fun continues. Former FSU football player and FSU trustee Derrick Brooks told CBS Sports’ Tim Brando it was the Big 12 that initiated talks with Florida State about potentially joining the conference.
From Brando’s radio show:
“It’s no harm in listening to what the pitch is. From our president’s standpoint, he was just attempting to put things out there from his perspective. ‘These are the pros as I see it, and these are the cons as I see it.”
“Hopefully by the Big 12 flirting or courting us it gives the ACC that much more credibility.”
“From my understanding, it is the Big 12 wanting to talk to us.”
Texas AD Deloss Dodds claims there have been no talks between the Big 12 and Florida State. FSU AD Randy Spetman also disputed the notion. He told CBSSports.com: “I don’t know where Derrick got that.”
Reasonable conjecture: There’s a significant faction at Florida State, pleased with neither the ACC nor the new TV deal. There might have been informal talks on some level about hypothetically moving Florida State to the Big 12. Whether that’s Florida State seriously wanting to move to the Big 12, a prelude to demanding a greater share of football revenue (postseason?) from the ACC or an attempt to send smoke signals to Mike Slive at the SEC, has yet to be determined.
In incidental news, Florida State University (the school) is trying to figure out how to replace the $65.8 million in state funding it lost.

I’m so fucking tired of realignment.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:12 PM
Slive and Co. want nothing to do with Free Shoe.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:15 PM
Derrick Brooks won the White NFL Man of the Year Award in 2003.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:16 PM
I can see why they were called, the Big 12 needs more cannon fodder. I mean it’s not like Colorado is there to be kicked around anymore.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:18 PM
Derrick Brooks won the White NFL Man of the Year Award in 2003.
Then who won the Black NFL Man of the Year Award?
/Whizzer!
May 16th, 2012 at 3:18 PM
The sad truth to all of this realignment business is that if there was a college football playoff system in place, there would be no need for any of this.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:19 PM
They don’t need cannon fodder, they need 12 teams. Being a 10-team conference right now is stupid. Everyone knows the B12 will go to 12 soon, but I don’t think adding FSU is where they’ll go. I’d bet Louisville and Cincinnati would be on their short list.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:20 PM
Dat Nguyen.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:20 PM
Not true at all. This is about the money the leagues get from their TV deals, and that money comes not from the postseason, but due to the regular season. The B10 Network, Texas doing their own thing and the P12′s deal changed the game. When Slive renegotiates the SEC deal now that A&M and Mizzou are in the SEC, they’ll get close to $25 million a year per team most likely.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:20 PM
Derrick Brooks, at his peak, was just as good as Ray Lewis; he just didn’t get the same hype. Should’ve come up with a ridiculous pregame introductions dance.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:20 PM
Being an ACC guy, I really want FSU to stay, but I’m assuming they’re gone. Too bad.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
Slive and Co. want nothing to do with Free Shoe.
Slive does, Gators don’t.
No way Gators let FSU in the SEC. They can block any such move — and have.
That would be like Georgia allowing Georgia Tech in… or South Carolina letting in Clemson. That’s a no-win for Florida.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:24 PM
Derrick Brooks, Booker T. Washington High legend, champion at every level, 3rd greatest pro athlete from Pensacola in the 90s, and all-around great guy.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:24 PM
brooks is good people.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:25 PM
It’s a no-win for everyone not named Florida State. They add nothing to the conference other that adding to the likelihood of the league cannibalizing itself.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:25 PM
legend.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:25 PM
Derrick Brooks, at his peak, was just as good as Ray Lewis; he just didn’t get the same hype.
Being a witness to murder and lying about was the best thing for Ray Ray’s career. Derrick Brooks was a beast.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:26 PM
He was key to the Tampa defenses owning Mike Vick when they were both still in the NFC South.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:26 PM
No way Gators let FSU in the SEC.
This is all that needs to be said about FSU and SEC.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
he was an unbelievable linebacker, no doubt, but im talking about brooks off the field…dude does stupid amounts of charity work.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:28 PM
he was an unbelievable linebacker, no doubt, but im talking about brooks off the field…dude does stupid amounts of charity work.
It’s incredibly stupid. Did you know that you don’t even get paid for charity work?
May 16th, 2012 at 3:29 PM
If Slive and Co wanted FSU in badly, they could get them in. Slive is smart enough to know that they have enough powers in their conference right now. That’s why A&M and MIZ were good additions (though I would have preferred them to stay at 12). Neither team will rock the boat too much. They’ll build up the middle class of the conference and make it stronger without making it impossible to run unscathed.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:29 PM
They are going to start with jacking up tuition and student “activity fees”.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:30 PM
If FSU leaves, may as well just merge the ACC and Big East right?
May 16th, 2012 at 3:30 PM
Notice not one reputable person has said, in effect, “Derrick Brooks has no idea what he is talking about?” or “Derrick Brooks is full of shit?”
That’s how much street cred the guy has. He’s above reproach.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:31 PM
i know, right? like those ghetto youth are going to be able to pay you back for that trip to africa. just another athlete who’s going to be broke soon after retirement.
/intentional idiocy…just making sure
May 16th, 2012 at 3:31 PM
I’m so fucking tired of realignment
i am too because based on how things have gone, it seems every story someone wants to throw at the fan is at least possible.
also, these pop up ads are maddening. make it stop.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:31 PM
It’s incredibly stupid. Did you know that you don’t even get paid for charity work?
But Brooks was already prepared for that life. He played against guys that weren’t getting paid every week in college. He never forgot that
May 16th, 2012 at 3:32 PM
True (but cannot underscore how Florida would never, ever let it happen; Gators have veto power). Football-wise, makes sense. Financially, not so much.
Adding a school already in the Old Confederacy doesn’t grow the brand.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:32 PM
That’s why A&M and MIZ were good additions Husker Dawg
You railed against Mizzou prior to admittance to the SEC. What has changed your mind?
May 16th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
It’s the perfect story for the modern sports blog/website. The possibilities are now endless as WVA is in the B12 and Boise State is (thinking about staying) with the Big East.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:34 PM
Oh…I hate both coming to the SEC, but from a business point of view it makes sense. I would have stood pat at 12 and let every other league make mistakes, but the proof will be in the pudding when the SEC’s new TV deal is monstrous.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:35 PM
KC:
I’ve accepted that standing pat simply wasn’t an option (or wasn’t going to be considered) so getting two teams that help the overall strength without scaring the powers is fine by me. It’s not what I would have done, but I get why they did it.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:37 PM
It’s the perfect story for the modern sports blog/website.
yep. whatever you throw out, no matter how poorly sourced, has a shot at being correct.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:39 PM
Yeah, but apparently Texas prefers 10 teams and no conference title game because it will provide an easier path to the title game/new playoff system. You know, the same Texas that has only two conference titles this decade.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:40 PM
yep. whatever you throw out, no matter how poorly sourced, has a shot at being correct.
Chip Brown agrees.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:41 PM
While I laughed at your crack about Texas, they know that in the long run they’re second only to Oklahoma (provided Bob stays in Norman). When you’ve only got to beat one other conf team with equal or better talent, that’s awfully enticing.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:41 PM
It’s not what I would have done, but I get why they did it.
SEC staying several steps ahead of everyone else.

A competent ombudsman could have a fucking field day looking back on the last two years of “journalism” as it pertains to realignment in college athletics. To call it an abortion is to do a disservice to unrealized fetuses everywhere.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:43 PM
a combudsman, perhaps?
/portmanteau-ly shit was that a horrible joke
May 16th, 2012 at 3:45 PM
Well, the Pac 12 was technically at 14 first, but they added 1 okay team and 1 terrible one, so that wasn’t the best decision. The SEC got stronger when they added the two new schools, and at this point I think they got stronger without getting too strong, making it more difficult for teams to go 11-1 or 12-0.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:45 PM
Made my day.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:46 PM
So true.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:47 PM
I love this guy.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:47 PM
Here’s the thing I think we all need to remember when we talk about college athletics and these big money deals. The more money there is, the more difficult it is to win, even for established powers.
Why? Because the smaller or less historically successful schools get way more marginal utility (bang for the buck) from their increased revenue. Texas already shells out for the best coaches, the best facilities, etc. Sure, Texas can now stripe its field in gold-flaked paint or hire migrant workers to spoon-feed its players, but who the fuck cares? But a place like Texas Tech can use that money to close the gap in more meaningful ways.
By no means will it be an equal playing field in terms of history, tradition, name recognition, etc. But I think the big bucks benefit the have-nots far more than the haves.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:49 PM
I think there’s a lot of truth here. Never really thought of it that way.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:53 PM

yeah Spencer that sounds like a good company to get auto credit from.

“The SEC got stronger when they added the two new schools, and at this point I think they got stronger without getting too strong, making it more difficult for teams to go 11-1 or 12-0.”
Adding another couple of Mississippi States made the conference better? I think you’re drinking too much Aggie kool-aid. They haven’t been relevant in a much weaker conference since 1998.

Funny. And on a local news station’s website. Lot of hate in Cleveland.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:56 PM
What he’s saying is that the SEC added two programs who won’t do much to threaten the quest for schools like Bama, LSU and Florida to get through the conference slate unscathed, but will be a step up from programs like Kentucky, Ole Miss, Miss. St and Vandy. Meaning, they won’t be a threat to impede the top dogs, but they will fortify the middle class and spring for the occasional 9-3 or 10-2 season.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:58 PM
If you think Miz and A&M are Miss St’s I don’t know what to tell you. MIZ, at the very least, is well above Miss St.
What he said.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:58 PM
And I’m saying he’s giving the Aggies and Mizzou too much credit. They will be just another couple of Mississippi States.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:59 PM
Texas A&M isn’t going to spring for the occasional anything, unless you count track and field championships. I know people get this huge boner over A&M’s brand name, and obviously they have a huge and dedicated following. But strip away all that crap to actual results and they aren’t impressive at all.
Great pickup for the SEC. Adds dollars, adds eyeballs, does nothing to threaten the established order.
May 16th, 2012 at 3:59 PM
They’ll win more than an average of 5 games a year, and that’s what MSU has done over the past 10 years I believe.

Such a great bit.
May 16th, 2012 at 4:02 PM
While I’m skeptical of both Miz and A&M’s offense in the SEC, Sumlin and Co. look like they can recruit, and if you can land studs, you can probably run pretty much any system you want. God knows the state of Texas should have the HS talent on the DL to compete in the SEC.

that is so simple, and so very true. that needs to be on a billboard in every big city in texas. that way, the aggies may shut up.
nevermind, they wouldnt.
May 16th, 2012 at 4:13 PM
It only takes one good HC hire to get a program to win. I have no clue if Sumlin is that hire, but all it takes it one.
May 16th, 2012 at 4:15 PM
This is a terrible yet kind of funny story. More funny is that I’ve seen it on a couple of different media outlets.

Perhaps, but what are the odds of making such a hire when your athletic department is run by Ranger069 and AggieLifer86 on the TexAgs message boards?
