I started with a Honda Nighthawk 750 – it was plenty quick, even through the mountains here (Colorado). You can probably find something to get you through a couple of years for well under $1500.

maybe a Honda Shadow w/some miles on it. Not sure how big you are. You can probably pick one up pretty cheaply. I’d definitely go used to see if it’s something you like, then upgrade later. The cruiser types are certainly easier to start with, and much lower insurance payments.
