Kobe Bryant’s Reactions to the Media Are Getting Increasingly Hilarious
Reporter: “Can you guard them?” [Them being the Thunder.]
Kobe: “Excuse me?”
Reporter: “Can you guys guard them, as a team?”
Kobe: *Fierce look of disdain* “No.”
The facial expressions Kobe makes after saying “No” should have had the rest of the ink-stained wretches in the room cracking up. Kobe’s dismissive nods that follow might be my favorite non-verbal NBA expression since Amare’s eyebrow raise at Blake Griffin.
If you look closely, you can almost see a “What the fuck is this clown talking about?” smirk on Kobe’s face as he turns to get up from his chair.

“What the fuck is this clown talking about?”
Always with the clowns with you.

They can’t guard them, but I love it when someone asks a dumb question and gets a dumb response back.
May 15th, 2012 at 11:35 AM
He answered the question honestly.

Typical exchange in my house:
Daughter: “Where’s mom?”
Me: “two-by-fours are not really 2 by 4.”

Serious question – has any all-time great player been on the wrong end of playoff game blowouts more often than Kobe?
May 15th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
They were showing some Blake highlights the other day, and when he dunked on Gasol (one of the times)…they showed Bynum’s reaction shot, which showed disgust, praise, and comedy all at once.
May 15th, 2012 at 11:41 AM
Not that I can recall. His teams do have a penchant for getting blown of the court.
May 15th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
No comments on the baseball post. OK.

Shaq.
May 15th, 2012 at 11:45 AM
I think that has a lot to do with makeup of the rest of the team in the second go-around. The Shaq/Kobe teams were MUCH tougher and Phil Jackson actually cared. This second incarnation has Metta (who’s tough but a psycho) and then Bynum (petulant child) and Pau (soft). They did have Derek Fisher who was incredibly tough, but was always outmatched.
Kobe has something to do with it too, not that he gives up, but he despises his teammates probably more than any other star I can remember. The chemistry has never been good on any of his teams. That’s on him in a lot of ways.

Shaq kept getting swept until ’99-’00.

I hate Kobe as much as the next guy, but a lot of this has to do with the sheer number of playoff games he’s been in. You play in a lot of games, you’re going to get blown out in some.

Good point. 216 counting last night. Which is 35 more than someone like Tim Duncan who has been in the playoffs every year of his career.
Still, it seems like there is a lot of playoff games where Kobe’s Lakers get blown off the court, especially elimination games.
May 15th, 2012 at 11:52 AM

May 15th, 2012 at 11:56 AM
That’s part of it, but it seems a trademark of the post-Shaq Laker teams that they take a game or two off every round. I’m thinking in particular of the Houston series a couple years ago that went to 7 games when it shouldn’t have, and the Denver series last round where they just mailed Game 6. Then there are the times where they just know they’re not winning the series so they quit (Game 7 vs. Phoenix in ’06, Game 6 vs. Boston in ’08, Game 4 vs. Dallas last year).
Not saying it’s all on Kobe, but he’s the star so it ultimately reflects on him.

I think he’s top-10 all time. Probably back end of the top-10, but top-10 nonetheless.
May 15th, 2012 at 11:57 AM
Stupid question aside, could you imagine busting your ass in a game, then having to put a suit on and go sit in a room with a bunch of sloppily dressed media types repeating the most topical “how did it feel when…” questions on a nightly basis?
May 15th, 2012 at 11:58 AM

Seems like a weak excuse. Kobe would hate this excuse.
May 15th, 2012 at 12:00 PM
Not the biggest Kobe fan, but that was a stupid question.
What sort of response was the reporter looking to elicit there?
May 15th, 2012 at 12:00 PM
No, but I can imagine sitting in a room dealing with a bunch of sloppily dressed morons and their stupids questions for 0.00001% of the money.
May 15th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
You play in a lot of games, you’re not gonna have a good time.
May 15th, 2012 at 12:02 PM
To be fair, he chooses to dress like that. It’s an obvious attempt to be like Jeter.
May 15th, 2012 at 12:03 PM
eh, you only lose endorsement money if you get accused of rape, chronic adultery, illegal interstate gambling and killing dogs.
outside of all that, you might actually make more endorsements being a dick like Kobe, even if you violate one of the three mentioned previously.
May 15th, 2012 at 12:03 PM

“Well, what we did tonight didn’t work. Perhaps we are going to have to switch up our matchups, and maybe try out a few different looks in Game 2. Oh, and I had sex with your wife.”
[Pau leans to Kobe, whispers]…”His wife’s in a coma”
May 15th, 2012 at 12:04 PM
Which would be tested on a nightly basis because all those media tards want to do is catch somebody, anybody saying something stupid so they could sensationalize it into drama. Count me out.
When I was at Auburn (interning in the athletic department) I was talking shit about an AU basketball performance/loss in the post game press conference room (before coaches/players had arrived) and was later told to pipe down by my boss who said that a student assistant had been quoted in a newspaper article as an anonymous “athletic department source upset with head basketball coach…” after he exchanged similar feelings with one of his friends in the press room. That was the day I found out reporters were assholes.
May 15th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
That’s an amazing stat. 85 in the last 5 seasons alone. At the end of the ’08 season Duncan had the lead (155-152).

May 15th, 2012 at 12:09 PM
Also, I gathered plenty of other evidence to prove the same…err that “a lot of” or “many” or “a high rate of” reporters were, if not outright assholes, at the very least they lacked a certain respect for hygiene, niceties, and/or respect.

Depends where you’re asking the question. I’ve never met anyone who thinks he’s as good or better than Jordan. I think it’s pretty safe to say he’s top 10 all-time. Is anyone really questioning that? The guy was pretty dominant on both ends his entire career and he has the rings.
So for him to be overrated, there have to be people overrated him. Who are those people? And where do you think he should be rated.
And yes, I do think he’s better than Bird. If you want to debate me on that..that’s fine. But it’s a legitimate argument. Heck, there are plenty of Laker fans that think he’s the best Laker ever, which means he’s better than Magic. And I don’t think you’re crazy if you engage in that debate either.

You play in a lot of games, you’re going to get blown out in some.
Seems like a weak excuse. Kobe would hate this excuse.
Believe it or not, even the Jordan Bulls got worked on occasion, and they were one of the greatest teams ever. Nobody goes 4-0, 4-0, 4-0, 4-0. Not sure who created this mythology that the best teams just go ballz deep every game.
May 15th, 2012 at 12:26 PM
That chick who writes for The Score gushes over Kobe to an absurd degree. Nauseating.
May 15th, 2012 at 12:28 PM
Mr. Lima, you should come out to LA. Lots of Laker fans think Kobe is the GOAT. Saying MJ > Kobe will start an argument with countless Laker homers. Kobe seems like he is in the 8-12 range when ranking all time.
May 15th, 2012 at 12:29 PM

Kobe: Yeah, ’cause I fucked her so hard!
May 15th, 2012 at 12:41 PM
kobe doin’ work
May 15th, 2012 at 12:51 PM
yeah that’s absurd. I had no problem pointing out where I thought Kobe stacked up with Jordan (better outside shooter, more range, and I thought just as good of a defender…pippen better than both). I also thought Kobe did it with less athleticism so his skill level and footwork was right up there. Jordan went up against handchecks, but less athletic defenders.
But Jordan was clearly the best (better passer/rebounder/higher IQ). Just think Kobe is as close as we’ll get to Jordan at that position.
8-12 seems fair. Obviously tough to compare the eras. The Magic/Kobe debate is actually a pretty fascinating one.
May 15th, 2012 at 2:51 PM
Kobe is better than Magic. Magic would be an All-Star in today’s NBA, but wouldn’t ever be in the conversation of who the top three guys in the league are.
There have been, over the years, some epic game one beat downs. The Lakers could still rally to win the series, but I think Kobe was honest and in FU mode at the same time. There is no way. None. That the Lakers can guard that OKC team. They’re weak at point and have been for years. Westbrook is going to eat them alive.
May 15th, 2012 at 6:55 PM
Sweet answer. Totally true.
