Tiger Woods Takes a Subtle Shot at Kevin Na For His “Waggle”
Golfer Kevin Na admitted over the weekend he needs to speed things up and pull the trigger (that’s what she said?). His demonstrative waggle was downright ridiculous at the TPC over the weekend, and the slow play from Na (among others) reached a breaking point: Tiger Woods chimed in, without specifically naming Na:
“I think it’s very simple,” he said. “If you get a warning, you get a penalty. I think that would speed it up.”
With the difference between first and second place this week costing $684,000, Woods rejects the Tour’s existing system of fining players between $5,000 and $20,000 for consistent pace of play violations.
“Strokes is money,” he said. “I would take the five grand (fine) over the 800K. That’s one shot. That’s the difference. That’s what people don’t realize – that one shot is so valuable out here.”
Tiger Woods, if you’re curious, finished 40th at the TPC. That’s on the heels of his 40th place finish at the Masters. [Golf Channel; Na Waggle via Paul Pabst]

Good for Tiger. Kevin Na can go eat shit. Relegate Na back to the Nationwide Tour.

Dude needs to fire his sports psychologist.
And by the way, what Tiger said is what everybody is saying.
May 14th, 2012 at 11:57 AM
I found this funny.
Set up: Traffic geniuses in Atlanta decided to open the emergency lanes to regular traffic during rush hour. Nothing bad could happen with that strategy. Of course, some knucklehead bounces off a guardrail ….

Tiger Woods, if you’re curious, finished 40th at the TPC. That’s on the heels of his 40th place finish at the Masters.
The implication here on the heels of quoting Tiger in a story about the integrity of rules in the game is a pretty lazy one.

josh beckett, steve trachsel, and Nomar think this guy takes too long..

Also, signal flare to Duffy: if you’re writing the Mad Men post, if you could include a screen cap or 5 of Alexis Bledel from Pete’s fantasy sequence, I and I imagine several others would greatly appreciate it.

Tiger on Sunday can be one of the biggest slow play offenders and has terrible course etiquette.
May 14th, 2012 at 11:58 AM
tiger takes for-fucking-ever himself…stop posturing and fucking hit the ball.
he doesn’t have a strong history at sawgrass…his shitty finish here is not very surprising.

Did the crowd count the NA adjustments in the relevant Asian-tongue like the NY area crowd did to Sergio Garcia (in spanish) a few years back?

Seriously though, let’s not ruin this golf post with Tiger talk. Thanks.

“Interestingly, the last time a player actually was given a penalty stroke for slow play was Dillard Pruitt in 1992. Pruitt now is on the Tour’s rules committee.”
I don’t think you understand the meaning of the word “interestingly.”

no, hitting em fairly flush and controlling spin and trajectory…just don’t feel comfortable with alignment and was leaving myself in 2-putt range rather than tap ins. between wedge and putter, costing myself prolly 10-strokes over a round when im not hitting the shots poorly.
been hitting the ball fairly well after a little slump tho, which is nice.

/”Hit the fucking ball, Sergio!”
//Heard all broadcast
May 14th, 2012 at 12:06 PM
to put this in perspective…they were getting on him for taking 30-40 seconds. na and guys like webb simpson routinely take up to a minute.
May 14th, 2012 at 12:07 PM
I always equate my alignment issues with pure laziness. Just not taking the extra 10 seconds it takes to pick a target and get aligned properly.
May 14th, 2012 at 12:08 PM
The singing of “na-na-na-na hey hey goodbye” after Na put one in the water on 13 was a bit much
May 14th, 2012 at 12:08 PM
Did anybody watch the tournament and know when they finished play on Sunday? The final group teed off at 245pm.
Is 3:30 really that unreasonable for guys on a penal course for the largest purse of the year? I think its overblown.
May 14th, 2012 at 12:08 PM
Wrong club or bad aim causing the ball to miss by so much? Wrong clubs’ a pretty easy fix, the other requires drills on the range with a couple of clubs/alingnment sticks.
May 14th, 2012 at 12:09 PM
Holy shit. Thank god someone said something. Sergio thinks Na is being ridiculous. Hit the fucking ball.
May 14th, 2012 at 12:09 PM
see, i take the time to get aligned, it’s just when i do, i feel REALLY uncomfortable and my past wedge shanking issues start to creep into my head.
it’s all mental…the shots are just offline. just gotta get used to hitting them on that line without the fear of shanking. only happens on 30-60 yard pitches too. really weird mental tick.
May 14th, 2012 at 12:09 PM
“to put this in perspective…they were getting on him for taking 30-40 seconds. na and guys like webb simpson routinely take up to a minute.”
Which brings up the answer to an interesting bit of golf trivia.

May 14th, 2012 at 12:11 PM
I’ve got a buddy who plays pretty slow, but not like this. I couldn’t imagine being on tour and having to play with something that slow and indecisive. It makes what Kuchar did yesterday all that more impressive.
May 14th, 2012 at 12:11 PM
don’t think it’s a clubchoice issue…just not being decisive. i overcompensate…aimed up right, just move my target line too far left until im comfortable and not worried about hitting it into a bunker or missing hte green. just wanna get puttin’ but unsatisfied even without the shanks.

May 14th, 2012 at 12:14 PM
At Bethpage, Sergio was really bad, but like most of the guys, said it just reached a critical point and was brought under scrutiny due to the stage of the event. Like Keegan Bradleys spitting, Tiger’s swearing, etc. Also, you get Joe Six Pack out there acting lame, well – that’s classless on their part, not Na’s.
There are always a few guys on tour with some routine issue. It’s a gripe like travel calls in the NBA. Always will be there. I honestly blame some of the TV production guys. Put Na on tape delay and make it work. Frank Chirkanian would have solved this post haste.
May 14th, 2012 at 12:14 PM

Slow play on average golfers is the worst. My all-time least favorite is the guy who can’t tell a story and play golf at the same time.
May 14th, 2012 at 12:15 PM
Spence, what’s your set up and alignment like? I’ve gotten a lot more consistent with a slightly open stance, weight forward, ball forward of center. Control the distance with your back swing and make sure you make an aggressive move at the ball, focusing on rotating through the finish. My last thought before the swing is to keep my hands quiet and use the big muscles.
May 14th, 2012 at 12:18 PM

May 14th, 2012 at 12:18 PM
diesel…slighly open, weight about 60/40 on the front, ball forward of center. i think my problem is im trying to keep the same length backswing, and control distance with my finsh, rather than swing arc. you mentioned the aggressive move…im making that, just not going thru the ball, like milksteak said.
dude, if you put in as much practice time as i do and still have these problems months later, it’d bug the living shit out of you too.

May 14th, 2012 at 12:32 PM
Part of our regular foursome couldn’t make it, so one guy brought his neighbor. Dude pulls some sick clubs (R9s, i think) out of his trunk and was talking a good game. First tee, guy does a Na waggle and shanks it into the next fairway. My buddy drops him off to hit it – another full Na waggle. Scalds it 20 yards (probably 20 feet). Took about 20 minutes to play the first hole. We didn’t say anythign to hime at this point. Second tee – a topped 40 yard drive (after full waggle). Guy then proceeeds to hit the ball behind himself. At this point, we told our buddy to have him pick up or play from another ball and to tell him no more than 15 seconds to hit the ball.
May 14th, 2012 at 12:34 PM
i feel his pain…the days when you just don’t have it are brutal. how was the rest of his round? he at least show some potential?

wow…that’s damning. i wonder what even made him think he’d be ok doing that…you figure a rich guy newbie would at least have some humility rather than trying to fake his way through a round. yeesh.
you know, as long as someone plays reasonably quick and has a sense of humor about the state of their game, i don’t have a problem with it. if a guy shows up with a white belt*, r11′s, rbz fairways, blades, vokeys with stamps on em and a new scotty, sucks ass but we have a good time, i can’t complain all that much.

on the whole, agreed. but the reason im so pissed about it is because im 2-putting after chips that should be hole-able. like, basic, simple, easy ass chips. i know i can do it fine, i hit some good wedge shots the rest of the round…just need consistency.
but overall, agreed…need to hit irons closer. gotta get better with every club tho.

From a guy that sucks, has cheap clubs and still wears tennis shoes to play, I love these guys.
May 14th, 2012 at 12:46 PM
Best defense against the mental side is to have a repeatable swing for the distances. For pitching, on a clock face 10-2 (some wrist break), 9-3 (some wrist break), and 8-4 (no wrist break). Run through these with your wedges and 9 iron and you’ll get 12 good shots from 50 yards in.
May 14th, 2012 at 12:47 PM
but overall, agreed…need to hit irons closer. gotta get better with every club tho.
just giving you shit, I went through a 2 month period where my wedge and putter may as well have been attached because iwas grabbing for both everytime I reached a green…
May 14th, 2012 at 12:47 PM
oh, also, yesterday we pulled up to #15 tee box and the first thing I saw in the trash was a RBZ shaft busted in half. I hate golfing with people like that, but love watching them from a far.
There were a couple probably college age douche-bags (Ricky Fowler flat billed hat, alopng with white rimmed sunglasses) playing with their parents yesterday. kid with the hat pushes a drive way right, throws his club about 20′ and starts cussing all over the tee-box. if that was my kid I would be driving his ass straight off the course.

it’s funny you mention this…saturday, i hit a green in reg and when i get up there, realized i brought my lob wedge with me out of habit. sad.
May 14th, 2012 at 12:50 PM
*actually, 75 yards in.
Due to off the tee issues, I suck. But I play fast. It’s just common courtesy, watch others balls off the tee, if the round isn’t going your way, pick up and play from your cart budies ball. If it’s still not going well, pick up and chip and putt out the hole (unless you scald your chip, then it’s time for more beer).
May 14th, 2012 at 12:52 PM

My common joke about 3 holes in is when I ask if it’s ok that I play best ball off the tee.
May 14th, 2012 at 12:52 PM
agreed with everything in 73…if it’s “one of those days” just hit the shots you know you can hit well and enjoy the weather. if you fuck up the others, just let it go and throw a ball down somewhere closer…at that point, why bother following the rules?

Got a golf trip trip this weekend. Mostly boozing, with 90 some holes of golf included.
May 14th, 2012 at 1:14 PM
you really think he’s mentally weak?
yes, and not b/c of his sketchy pre-shot routine. watch him in interviews and how he carries himself on the course and it’s obvious that he’s emotionally unstable (maybe not the best description) or something along those lines.
i guess he just doesn’t look confident more than anything.
May 14th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
oh, i totally agree with that. only life he knows is on a golf course, probably.

I have 500+ balls in my garage for a reason. I’m trying to convince myself to stop caring about putting balls out of play.
May 14th, 2012 at 1:19 PM
Na owns his slow play. He says he’s working on it. He says he feels tremendous pressure due to the rigors of the PGA Tour.
So he has a problem, admits it, gives a plausible reason – and that means he is unstable. I think he’ll fix it and be fine. He’s been making plenty of cuts. Once he frees himself up w/ confidence he’ll be even better.
May 14th, 2012 at 1:22 PM
Re: short game.
I love the 9-to-3 w/ PW for when I don’t want to go hard after a gap wedge or don’t like a lie. Very good shot ot have.
I think most people need a “go to” short game shot and go from there. Too many choices can be a bad thing. I work hard on the standard bump and run (can use various clubs) and putting w/ my hybrid. Two easy items that take fear out of short game. I can flop but do less now, puts too much stress into the game when you dont play as much.

Dang. I sent two of the massive “if it fits, it ships” boxes maxed w/ balls to the middle east for soldiers to hit. They hit them into a mine field. There are things like this you can do w/ them.
May 14th, 2012 at 1:24 PM
scripty…dind’t you play black diamond last year? i feel like i remember someone here talking about how it’s one of the toughest coursees around…
regardless, place looks gorgeous. should be awesome.
May 14th, 2012 at 1:26 PM
AWESOME.
May 14th, 2012 at 1:28 PM
That’s cool… had no idea you could do such things. I’ve seen one of the courses that was built in Basra. Three holes alongside a minefield.
95% of the balls I have are “good” balls (ProV, B330, Penta) so I’d hate to send them to certain death in a minefield. I’ll probably donate a couple hundred to First Tee this fall.
May 14th, 2012 at 1:29 PM
shit, if they’re in decent shape, i’ll buy a box off your hands.
May 14th, 2012 at 1:33 PM
It looks great from afar, but it’s been in pretty rough shape the last year or so. We were playing in late april, early may, so they may not have been able to get on top of things, but there was clover in the fairways, bunkers weren’t kept. They just hired a new superintendent, so hopefully they go that cleaned up.
It’s a grossly unfair course. It punishes good shots and if you hit a bad one, forget about it.
All that said, after playing both Boyne and Oglebay, we keep going back to Black Diamond. The cost of Boyne was about $700 for three days (plus 7-8 hour drive), Oglebay was nearly $600 (2.5 hours). We play Black Diamond for $275, including food and beer. Plus, you’re the only people there at night, so things can get out of hand, where at Boyne and Oglebay, people are nearby.
May 14th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
Also, I order 200 reconditioned balls to play in the afternoon when the drinking has really commenced.
May 14th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
I bought 200 balls from Lostgolfballs about a year ago right after I joined my club. I think I’ve gone through maybe four dozen of those since. In the meantime I find roughly a dozen 4-pc balls every round I play (when I walk). I spend a lot of time digging around the edges of fairways when waiting to hit.
May 14th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
not a good sign…
black diamond sounds like the old thunder hill course that just closed. i loved that place…but in a shitty economy, losing a dozen balls on top of greens fees isn’t exactly appealing.
