if God really has a problem with gays getting hitched, won’t he ultimately take care of them? That’s kinda how I view the whole thing. I got no beef with gays and wish people would just let this shit go. But if God REALLY doesn’t like them (and again, how the fuck would we really know?) then what am I going to do about it?

I told this to an acquaintance who became a born-again in the last few years and said, “You could draw God’s wrath” or something like that. I’ve been fortunate to serve on the board of my college so I’ve been around a lot of rich people. One guy who’s made a ton of money and given millions, if not tens of millions, back to the college, has been in charge of the last few major capital campaigns. He literally chokes up when he talks about the average people who give money back to their school. He says their gifts are far more sacrificial than his.

Once he was pushing board members to give more so the college could get a matching grant from a prestigious foundation somewhere. I gave him a check for $250 – it was all I could do as we’d just had a new baby – and he practically started bawling.

That guy has it figured out.

Of all people, Bobcat Goldthwait (sp?) made such a gerat point last week on Real Time when he said that Romney has this sentiment (or seems to have it) that in life you should always want to be a millionaire or you’re not doing it right. I don’t need a million dollars nor do I think I will ever have that kind of money, but to be happy I won’t need it. I grew up happy with great friends and excellent parents and we never had that kind of money. It’s almost insulting at times when I hear him speak.

I agree with everything you said, with the exception of that point I bolded. We will all need a million dollars, and in reality probably multiple millions of dollars, in accumulated assets to retire and maintain the even modest lifestyles we’re used to.

But a million dollars on hand right now…obviously not.

How much is a lower end CC membership in Dallas? (and, I assume in Houston?) Dumb question, but what do membership fees cover, just golf/tennis, or are there other benefits?

I had a ClubCorp Young Exec membership a couple years ago for $250/mo and no handshake. That gave me availability at 12 country clubs in the DFW area, plus priveleges nationwide for a pretty small fee. It was a really good deal for the under 40 crowd. The only hiccup is that you couldn’t get a tee time until 48 hours before a round, so it made trying to play early on weekends hell.

If you become uber rich and complain about being marginalized I will hate you. Other than that though yeah you’re safe.

I am in no danger whatsoever of becoming uber rich. Though I do aim for comfortably middle class. It isn’t what you make, it’s how you manage it.

Texas, West Virginia..same thing.

I’ve lived in both places. Texans are richer, West By Godians are less delusional about themselves. Both have major, major problems, however.

I don’t think i’ve heard one argument against gay marriage that wasn’t rooted within a religious context that had valid points.

All of this. I love it when we use a 2,000 year-old-book written by ignorant men as our guideline for how we should treat people.

I mean, I’m a straight white guy. I’ve never know what it’s like to have someone hate me, or protest against me, or try to marginalize me as a person because of who I am. This has to be an incredible moment for those people.
