Ha. Who hasn’t tried that?

“if you ask me, this says more about how stupid the people of Texas are than how unpopular Obama is…”
Thats an interesting conclusion since it happened in WEST VIRGINIA.
Side note: West Virginia is a closed primary, these were democrats voting for Mr Judd.

Similar to ESPN using Keyshawn to deliver crappy commentary to us viewers on Sunday NFL Countdown.
Too bad Sunday NFL Countdown doesn’t show pics of Kim like here, http://www.radaronline.com/sites/radaronline.com/files/photos/image_20120110/kim-kardashian-bikini-football-01.jpg and here.

So I have a phone interview this afternoon for a job I really want, a big step up that I know I could excel at if given the opportunity. I’m interviewing with a woman I know somewhat.
My problem is I’m not a big self-promoter, thus I think I’m perceived as a long shot with a lack of “sizzle.” For all I know, this could just be a courtesy interview based on my connections at this organization. My cover letter is great and my resume is solid.
But I need to make a compelling case to someone who probably already has her opinions formed about me about why I should be the guy. What more I have to offer than what she thinks she knows about me. But it needs to be genuine – it can’t be an over-the-top sales pitch – because again, she knows me enough to know if I’m faking it.
So based on that synopsis, I’ll yield the floor for advice. Go.
May 10th, 2012 at 8:26 AM

I’m uncomfortable taking my kids to the liquor store with me. Just doesn’t seem right. But when I do, I definitely strap to the hood.

Damn I hate interviews. I’m not good at self promoting either, I’m more likely to self deprecate. It just seems so fake. Look at my resume, look at my record, talk to my references, whatever. Why do you need to hear me cheerlead myself to you? Ugh.
May 10th, 2012 at 8:36 AM
The scariest thing is when you bluff your way through an interview and then they hire you and you realize oh fuck I don’t know how to do any of the shit I said I do.

/Yes – I know he has nothing to do with the price of gas in America.

What a pussy. If it’s a “given” then he should drive for a year if Barry loses. That’s some mighty fine hedging.

Drink whiskey before, during and afterwords.
Make reference to not being self promoter but you have forced yourself to outline why you can do said job.
Generally speaking you treat a warm call like a cold call to prove you are not taking the relationship for granted.
If all else fails call her babe, women loved to called babe.
May 10th, 2012 at 8:51 AM
Big Hoss – when they ask you what your faults are, always say “I have extremely high expectations of my coworkers b/c I have extremely high expectations of myself. This can be problematic when working with people who view their job with less importance than I do.”
May 10th, 2012 at 8:52 AM

very true. Republicans just want to beat Obama. They don’t really care who does it, as shown by the candidates over the past year. I think the best candidate was Huntsman but sadly, elections are about money and not actually about political stances anymore.
May 10th, 2012 at 9:07 AM
the biggest problem is a complacent democratic base. there will be a lot of urgency created by the obama campaign so people don’t stay home on election day.

/they’re going to end up in Quebec City
May 10th, 2012 at 9:09 AM
i still think this year for the GOP was about eliminating the terrible candidates from 2016. Bachmann, Newt, Santorum, Paul, Romney (if he loses) will be kept on the sidelines in 2016 so they don’t bring down a potentially strong gop lineup in 2016 against a potentially weak dem lineup.
May 10th, 2012 at 9:09 AM
Oh, I don’t disagree with you on that.
I just think if you’re in a position of authority and only concentrating on an employees/student’s social networking habits, perhaps you’re not concentrating on things you should be doing.
This is sort of like the boss, whose best management move is to worry about what time everyone gets in in the morning. If you got into management to worry about that, you should re-think things.

There is a lot of logic in this thought. Christie, Rubio and Jeb Bush are all much better candidates (though none are locks) compared with the shit the Reps trotted out this time. The fact that at one point Rick Santorum, Herman Cain and Newt Gingrich were considered the front runners still boggles my mind.

However, a little birdie told me Vipstand.tv is a possible location.

I’m the same way. Summer of 2007 AMC used that song as the music for their monthly promotion of the movies they were running (back when AMC actually showed movies) and I was like whoa this is solid. I never really got into them before that.

Son Volt. I just fell asleep reading that name. Yawn.
agree, i always thought they were boring. not even a new band with jim james (new multitudes) could pep jay farrar up.

Hey MPIII, ever played Royal Oaks? You wouldn’t happen to drive a Mini Cooper, would ya?
May 10th, 2012 at 9:24 AM
“This is the most exciting/inspirational/saddest thing you’ll read/hear/watch today”
It’s shameless self-promotion, with which as you mentioned previously, you are not proficient. No?
May 10th, 2012 at 9:25 AM
Sporting News ranked all 124 College Football coaches. No. 1 is no surprise, but No. 2 might be to some people.
Couple of thoughts:
James Franklin is way too fucking high (25th), but so is Gene Chizik (36th).
Dantonio one spot ahead of Richt is fucking hilarious. Has Dantonio won the B10 outright? I think he maybe shared a title or two.
May 10th, 2012 at 9:25 AM
Dems are going to roll out Hillary in 2016, everyone knows it’s going to happen.
May 10th, 2012 at 9:25 AM
I’ve been lucky enough to get free tickets for 3 playoff games now. So yes. One game though I couldn’t tell you what happened because we pregamed for about 4 hours at saddle ranch.

May 10th, 2012 at 9:26 AM
the tea party congressmen are more than Boehner can handle, even if he wanted to get things moving, no one wants to b/c they see it as a win for Obama rather than the country.
the scary thing is the guy who beat Luger in the primary who says a compromise is Dems coming to the GOP, not both sides meeting in the middle.

I listened to some Son Volt back when I was in school but they never really did it for me. they have a connection to Wilco I guess?
May 10th, 2012 at 9:27 AM
Trace is an insanely good album
That album was so good he kept making it over and over again.
The only Wilco I like was the first Billy Bragg collaboration. I just wasn’t much a fan of either Wilco or Son Volt. Uncle Tupelo was great. Never got past them breaking up. Whiskey Bottle.

I suggest you just go to Wiki and type in Uncle Tupelo. Very interesting how that all shook down.

Uncle Tupelo was a great alt-country band. After they split, Jeff Tweedy started Wilco and Jay Farrar started Son Volt

Mike Gundy is considered the 10th best coach in college football? That seems like a bit of a reach. Dabo Swinney at 27? They must value paying recruits highly.

i like that band alot. the album has a few duds on it (none where JJ is the lead), and Ahead of the Curve is my favorite track on the LP.

My goodness. the Diamondback opening pitch story…allergies kicking up again.

I’m not sure desperate is the right word, as she’ll be the biggest name in the election for sure, but I agree that her time came and went with the disaster that was her 2008 campaign.

May 10th, 2012 at 9:33 AM
i enjoyed it. I like all the indiviual acts of the guys so it was interesting to see how they sounded together. (well, Conor oberst is hit and miss but his most recent album sans Bright Eyes moniker was pretty good)

Oh…she’ll have a great shot, especially if unemployment is sub 7%. I just think her age will be the biggest issue. The last time we elected someone that old we got Reagan and he forgot his name half of the time in his 2nd term.

May 10th, 2012 at 9:36 AM
The Democratic field in 2016 has a chance to be pretty good too. There will be a strong groundswell for Hillary if she wants it. I’m wondering if Andrew Cuomo will be the nominee, however.

Graveyard Shift
There’s too much time spent looking for a reason
It’s the simple ones that beat the most truth
Oh, what a life a mess can be

Get up and start what needs to be done
It’s running down, there’s much you missed
Working on that graveyard shift

May 10th, 2012 at 9:40 AM
Old Man Bill is one helluva coach. I don’t think he’s too high, yet I’d take Pelini over him as well as KST will never win shit with Bill. Sure, they can have random seasons where they win 10 games, but that’s it. Having said that, I don’t think Pelini is anything special at this point. Dude has to show something this year or he’s gonna be the next Mark Richt in terms of people talking about how hot his seat is.
May 10th, 2012 at 9:40 AM
i think the big difference is women are relatively healthier than men at that age and medicine is far more advanced than when Reagan was in office.
the problem the GOP will have is running nothing but governors against at least one person with very strong international affairs and legislative branch experience, as well as a strong adviser behind the scenes with bill.
she’s a smart choice but ran up against Obama, no one could have beaten that in the primary.

I disagree with that. Hillary SHOULD have beaten him, but her campaign didn’t take him seriously until it was too late. Hubris got the best of them in my opinion.

May 10th, 2012 at 9:44 AM
Agreed that he has to win something more than he has. Not convinced that if he doesn’t do it this year he’ll be on the hot seat. I’d say he has another couple years. If there isn’t at least a BCS appearance in next 3 then the hot seat.

May 10th, 2012 at 9:46 AM
in all honesty, I don’t know what they will do should the Hogs have a great season. hitching the wagon to JLS would be a bad idea, and the way the roster sets up this year, next year will be down from the previous three, so it seems it would be a good time to bring in a new head coach. I just don’t see any good in keeping him around past this year, regardless of what happens this year.
May 10th, 2012 at 9:47 AM
If they finish like I think they will this year (8-5/9-4) you can be damn sure he’ll be on the hotseat. He’s paid too much money to lose 4 games every year, which is exactly what he’s doing. My big issue with Pelini are the hires he’s made on offense. As good of a defensive coach as he is, I think he’s equally bad when it comes to hiring offensive guys. Their OL coach is terrible, their RB’s coach has been nothing but average for 20 years and their OC has a lot to prove.
May 10th, 2012 at 9:48 AM
I do…hire someone else and say thanks but no thanks to JLS. I don’t care if they win the whole fucking thing. They should, under no circumstance, hire Smith as their permanent coach.
May 10th, 2012 at 9:48 AM
What, you’re not at Prestonwood already? Amateur.

How much is a lower end CC membership in Dallas? (and, I assume in Houston?) Dumb question, but what do membership fees cover, just golf/tennis, or are there other benefits? Was a member of a tennis club here and it was north of 200 a month.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:04 AM
I just don’t get the opposition to gay marriage. I never cease to be amazed that people have no qualms whatsoever about telling a woman what she can and can’t do in her own vagina or gay people who they can and can’t marry. But then when they’re told they have to buy health insurance so the rest of us responsible people aren’t picking up their tab when their irresponsible asses go to the ER, it’s an infringement upon their freedom.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:04 AM
I must say, though, that the gay people that I’m friends with on facebook were nauseating in their response as well.

May 10th, 2012 at 10:08 AM
yeah, it’s sad. It’s mind boggling, but i pity those with that point of view. that’s a tiny, tiny world they put themselves in.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:08 AM
In what way? Just excitement over it?
I somewhat give them a pass. I mean, I’m a straight white guy. I’ve never know what it’s like to have someone hate me, or protest against me, or try to marginalize me as a person because of who I am. This has to be an incredible moment for those people.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:09 AM
I get it. I even feel it. As we age, I think there’s this pull (at least in my head there is) towards “that’s the way things have always been”. Even I feel it on the gay marriage issue. A part of me thinks “marriage is between a man and a woman, that’s the way it’s always been.” It’s not necessarily logical, but I can definitely see that element even in non-bigoted peoples’ thinking.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:12 AM
I’m late to the party on this — Does gay marriage affect my life in any way at all? No. If it makes people happy go for it — Seth Rogan had a great tweet yesterday:
Claiming that someone else’ marriage is agaisnt your religion is like being angry at someone for eating a donut because you are on a diet.
Though if someone is agaisnt it, I would be open to hearing your reasoning — if it can stay civil.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:12 AM
You are much more tolerant and understanding than I think I would be.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:13 AM
How much is a lower end CC membership in Dallas? (and, I assume in Houston?) Dumb question, but what do membership fees cover, just golf/tennis, or are there other benefits?
Dallas Athletic Club is 7500 for a junior membership and includes 400/month of dues that involves golf, pool, tennis etc. for what that course is, its a great value.
Houston- Cinco Ranch or Blackhorse is the way to go IMO. about the same as above.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:13 AM
How much of this is tied up in your opinion of marriage for yourself?
May 10th, 2012 at 10:16 AM
Completely agree with this.
It’s not like straight people have done some great justice to the “institution” of marriage given the current rate of divorce in first marriages (it’s even higher in second marriages).
Who are straight people to quibble on who and who shouldn’t get married?
May 10th, 2012 at 10:18 AM
We got married in Vancouver several years back. I would be completely fine with a “separate but equal” type of thing like civil unions if it involved all the “rights” of marriage.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:22 AM
It would be Pelini as he is the one doing the hiring. I don’t blame incompetent coaches for accepting a good gig. I do blame the person who hires them though.
Re: Gay marriage
Our kids will look back and be amazed at how terribly we treated gay people for so long. It will be much in the same way we look back at our parents with disgust at how their generation treated black people. When you side with exclusion as opposed to inclusion, you always look like the fool.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:23 AM
Sorta encapsulates the whole of human history and existence, doesn’t it?
May 10th, 2012 at 10:23 AM
I don’t think i’ve heard one argument against gay marriage that wasn’t rooted within a religious context that had valid points.
it’s like that SNL skit “Point/CounterPoint” with Jimmy Fallon and Derek Jeter.
Fallon (as red sox fan): Point, You suck derek jeter!
Jeter: Counterpoint. No, I don’t.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:24 AM
Thoughtful response and I don’t disagree. A few years ago, I don’t remember how many, when this issue started to enter my consciousness, I was against gay marriage too – though not virulently – but I thought there should absolutely be some kind of civil union with all the rights of marriage, etc.
But over time, though I never recall “deciding” that I’m on board with gay marriage, I found myself being pretty strongly in favor of it. Not sure why, I assume that as I thought about it over time and was more exposed to the idea, I realized I really had no reason to oppose it.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:24 AM
So well said. My feelings exactly. I can’t imagine someone protesting my wedding or telling me I’m not on the same level as a human being as they are.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:27 AM
All of this. I love it when we use a 2,000 year-old-book written by ignorant men as our guideline for how we should treat people.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:27 AM
If you become uber rich and complain about being marginalized I will hate you. Other than that though yeah you’re safe.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
I’ve lived in both places. Texans are richer, West By Godians are less delusional about themselves. Both have major, major problems, however.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:30 AM
I am in no danger whatsoever of becoming uber rich. Though I do aim for comfortably middle class. It isn’t what you make, it’s how you manage it.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:30 AM
“West By Godians” might be the best thing I’ve read in a long time.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
Also, plaudits on the ScarJo pic. She’s rockin’ it.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
One thing that really got me from a lot of the language of the bible thumpers in NC that I read about this is that they say marriage was created by God for a man and a woman. Pretty sure secular people and even pagans were getting married long before the Church ordained it a sacrament.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:32 AM
Of all people, Bobcat Goldthwait (sp?) made such a gerat point last week on Real Time when he said that Romney has this sentiment (or seems to have it) that in life you should always want to be a millionaire or you’re not doing it right. I don’t need a million dollars nor do I think I will ever have that kind of money, but to be happy I won’t need it. I grew up happy with great friends and excellent parents and we never had that kind of money. It’s almost insulting at times when I hear him speak.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:33 AM
I had a ClubCorp Young Exec membership a couple years ago for $250/mo and no handshake. That gave me availability at 12 country clubs in the DFW area, plus priveleges nationwide for a pretty small fee. It was a really good deal for the under 40 crowd. The only hiccup is that you couldn’t get a tee time until 48 hours before a round, so it made trying to play early on weekends hell.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:33 AM
Oh…they were and it’s a proven fact that those who hate gays like to ignore/avoid/discredit.

throughout your life you are going to earn money, spend money and make money through investments or by chance, lose that money, and make it back again.
money will buy you consumables, it will buy you status, but it will never buy time. Our time in this world is finite, aspire to have a life rich with friends and family, not rich with money.
i became much more comfortable with my life once i realized this.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:38 AM
I agree with everything you said, with the exception of that point I bolded. We will all need a million dollars, and in reality probably multiple millions of dollars, in accumulated assets to retire and maintain the even modest lifestyles we’re used to.
But a million dollars on hand right now…obviously not.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
I’ve been fortunate to serve on the board of my college so I’ve been around a lot of rich people. One guy who’s made a ton of money and given millions, if not tens of millions, back to the college, has been in charge of the last few major capital campaigns. He literally chokes up when he talks about the average people who give money back to their school. He says their gifts are far more sacrificial than his.
Once he was pushing board members to give more so the college could get a matching grant from a prestigious foundation somewhere. I gave him a check for $250 – it was all I could do as we’d just had a new baby – and he practically started bawling.
That guy has it figured out.

As somebody raised Catholic, here’s the thing that annoys me about religious folk and gay marriage:
if God really has a problem with gays getting hitched, won’t he ultimately take care of them? That’s kinda how I view the whole thing. I got no beef with gays and wish people would just let this shit go. But if God REALLY doesn’t like them (and again, how the fuck would we really know?) then what am I going to do about it?
I told this to an acquaintance who became a born-again in the last few years and said, “You could draw God’s wrath” or something like that. I then dropped a line from Huck Finn when he was thinking to himself about letting Jim get away and what kinda trouble that could get him in: “All right then, I’ll go to Hell.” Guy quieted down after that one.
