RIP Knicks Season. Knee-Jerk Thoughts on New York in 2012-2013
Knicks 94, Heat 106. Series over. Season over. Carmelo took 31 shots and scored 35 points. In 35 minutes off the bench, JR Smith amazingly shot 3-of-15, had zero rebounds, zero assists, zero steals and zero blocks. He did have two turnovers. (Afterward, he took to twitter and responded to all the NY fans who hammered him for the performance.)
Anyway, let’s briefly talk about next season:
1) Mike Woodson inexplicably played Steve Novak just 12 minutes in game five. The “best shooter in the NBA” who led the league in 3-point shooting (47 percent) was 4-of-7 from deep in the series. Miami defended him well, but that’s a horrendous job by Woodson. Anyway, if Phil Jackson and John Calipari say no (and neither seems interested at this time, anyway), my vote is for Stan Van Gundy.
2) According to this chart, the Knicks have decisions to make about the following players who were at one point in the rotation: Baron Davis, Mike Bibby, Jared Jefferies, Steve Novak, Bill Walker, Landry Fields, Jeremy Lin. In order of importance – Lin, Novak, Jefferies. Frankly, it wouldn’t surprise me if the others didn’t return. The emergence of Shumpert makes Fields less important. Baron’s career might be over. Mike Bibby turns 34 next week.
3) JR Smith can opt-out and try to make more money elsewhere, which is probably what will happen. New York simply can’t afford him and Lin and Novak. The Knicks need Smith’s offensive punch off the bench, but they probably can’t afford him.
4) Free Agency: Ha. That’s funny. Like they have any cap room. I’d try to move Amare, but good luck with that. Moving him to the bench and a 6th man role makes sense. A starting lineup of Lin, Shumpert, a 3-point shooting small forward (Novak?), Melo and Chandler work for you?
5) NBA draft: No first round pick. In the 2nd round, the move would probably be to get a point guard to back up Lin, a shooting guard, or a power forward (Amare will get hurt again). Just a few names of players who could be around in the 2nd round (48th): Kansas PG Tyshawn Taylor, Baylor PF Quincy Acy, Missouri SG Kim English, Missouri PF Ricardo Ratliffe, Wesley Witherspoon, SF, Memphis.
6) Keep Isiah Thomas away from the franchise. Please.

TBL when does the Clippers / Spurs matchup start again?
May 10th, 2012 at 9:37 AM
Naw, that’s alright…
May 10th, 2012 at 9:38 AM
as soon as the Grizzlies series ends?
May 10th, 2012 at 9:39 AM
On ESPN this morning I learned that all the Knicks need is the right PG, the right system, the right coach and a lot of good “nuts and bolts” role players. That’s it.
May 10th, 2012 at 9:41 AM
I agree that Novak should get more burn but its not like he wouldve carried them to another victory.
May 10th, 2012 at 9:41 AM
I never thought about it till now but Amare is very much on the Danny Manning career path.
May 10th, 2012 at 9:42 AM
A couple months ago they were loaded. Now, you’re suggesting they start Steve Novak and get a 7th man with the 48th pick in the draft?
May 10th, 2012 at 9:42 AM
And also the Pacers need a top 5 go-to player to win a championship. So insightful…
May 10th, 2012 at 9:42 AM
No chance Phil Jackson goes to NY with the current Knicks situation. batshit crazy owner, Isaiah lurking somewhere in the wings, bad contracts on the roster, no depth, and a one-dimensional player as lead dog. Stay in Montana, big man
May 10th, 2012 at 9:43 AM
Trading Melo would be my first priority.
May 10th, 2012 at 9:43 AM
Novak didn’t play much because no matter what he did, he couldn’t get his shot up. Spolestra made sure that closing out on Novak was a priority. That got him a little scared to pull the trigger.
May 10th, 2012 at 9:44 AM
Wait. I think I missed the one about the Jazz’s season. And I anticipate that there will be one about the Nuggets this weekend.
/since you’re dedicating posts to mediocre basketball teams after they’re eliminated
//I expect my “storied franchises” to have more championships than the Houston Rockets
May 10th, 2012 at 9:44 AM
Fuck no. But it’s not like they’ll have much of a choice…
May 10th, 2012 at 9:44 AM
The Suns only need a starting PG, SG, SF and PF and they will be a championship contender (The Bench is set!). Oh I don’t like this game.
May 10th, 2012 at 9:44 AM
And I can’t believe that in 2015 they will be over the cap with just 3 players….$61.5 million wrapped up in Melo, a guy that can’t play defense, and a guy that can’t play offense. That’s incredible.
May 10th, 2012 at 9:45 AM
This entire paragraph is why everyone laughed at Knicks’ fans when they were SO EXCITED about this year’s team.
May 10th, 2012 at 9:46 AM
Give (or force) Amare into the James Harden role in the second unit. At the same time, Amare + Carmelo = Clusterfuck.
That is fucking amazing. It’s like a robot that stands and shots 20% from some spot on the floor only occasionally it doesn’t catch the pass and commits and turnover.
May 10th, 2012 at 9:46 AM
Exactly. And if he can’t even get his shots up, what is he bringing you? Then again, since Fields has fallen off a cliff he couldn’t have been worse than him.
May 10th, 2012 at 9:46 AM
that’s the same person..oh..you meant Amare as the 2nd person..
Lin also isn’t the answer as a starting PG. Just look at how Boston and Miami made Jeremy Lin look like a backup PG or D-leaguer
May 10th, 2012 at 9:47 AM
Last year of everyone’s contract. And Melo will have opted out by then. I don’t know if there is an extension by that point, but still…
May 10th, 2012 at 9:47 AM
Also, quite a trio pacakged together at The Players. Tiger, Rickie, and Hunter. They’re all even after 13 (started on back), with one birdie and one bogey each.
May 10th, 2012 at 9:47 AM
Move them to Columbus
May 10th, 2012 at 9:48 AM
Getting excited for a playoff team > general nonchalance for a playoff team in the Highlight Factory.
May 10th, 2012 at 9:49 AM
Watching SVG attempting to get Melo and Amar’e to play defense would be high comedy.
May 10th, 2012 at 9:49 AM
Good time to revisit this? Or should we wait until the Finals are over?
/lets do both
May 10th, 2012 at 9:51 AM
damn, that’s one creepy thought. a lurking Isaiah.
May 10th, 2012 at 9:52 AM
You must have missed the atmosphere in Game 5 in ATL. That place was nuts.
May 10th, 2012 at 9:52 AM
6) Keep Isiah Thomas away from the franchise. Please.
This is the smartest thing in the entire paragraph.
May 10th, 2012 at 9:54 AM
With the new CBA, I doubt Melo opts out of $23.5 million at 31 years old.
May 10th, 2012 at 9:54 AM
So funny. Even funnier that Atlanta was left out again, yet finished 4th with their All-Star F/C out for 90% of the season.
May 10th, 2012 at 9:54 AM
1 playoff win in like 12 years? GREAT FRANCHISE!!!!!
May 10th, 2012 at 9:55 AM
To be fair, he knew they’d be losing Woodson to the Knicks in the winter.
May 10th, 2012 at 9:55 AM
Anywhere can get hyped up for a game that’s close late. Plus, they haven’t grasped the concept of not cheering for the visitors yet.
May 10th, 2012 at 9:56 AM
Why would anyone ever want JR Smith on their team?
May 10th, 2012 at 9:56 AM
Sigh. The sad thing is I have no clue what I would rather. Him opt out, stay, or sign an extension.
May 10th, 2012 at 9:58 AM
Amare … just not a good player.
May 10th, 2012 at 9:58 AM
But wait, there’s more:
2nd round: Miami over Indiana, New York over Chicago (Yes, I’m buying into Baron Davis and a cast of characters in the backcourt!)May 10th, 2012 at 9:58 AM
They were jacked the entire game. The one team that brings out the crazy in Hawks fans seems to be Boston. We hate them.
May 10th, 2012 at 9:59 AM
Zeke Pt. II is coming. You know it. Dolan can’t help himself.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:00 AM
Step 1: determine who you’re keeping – Carmelo or Amar’e. They get in each others’ way.
Step 2: trade/amnesty whoever you choose to be rid of.
Step 3: build to fit what the remaining franchise piece doesn’t do well. Ex: Amar’e + Chandler.
Step 4: don’t be so eager to use up whatever cap space you free up on next big name/trade assets.
Step 5: Lock Jim Dolan out of GM office
Step 6: PROFIT!
May 10th, 2012 at 10:00 AM
And also, if you stick with the Hawks on a nightly basis with their owners and their mental midgets like Joe Johnson and Josh Smith, you’d have 3 ulcers. This team and their ownership are so dysfunctional. You can never bet on or against them as you never know what you’re getting. They are the most frustrating team in the NBA. At least everyone knows Melo, Amar’e and Smith are pathetic chokers who can’t play defense. With Atlanta they can look like the best team in the league in the 2nd QTR and the worst in the 3rd.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:01 AM
I for one am shocked that a fan would optimistically overestimate the ceiling for his team. Nobody ever does that.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:02 AM
I’ll defer to the expert:
He’s got unlimited range, a slick handle (see below) and should be a deadly weapon for the Knicks on the offensive end.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:02 AM
The Pistons will take Amare for Austin Daye and a 2nd round pick.

May 10th, 2012 at 10:06 AM
The comments on that thread are outstanding.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:07 AM
Oops.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:10 AM
Well this should make things fun and interesting.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:13 AM
That kind of article pisses me off. Breaking news: teenage boy did dumb shit.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:15 AM
Agree, though this just furthers Mittens’ image a spoiled rich kid who has disliked the gays for his entire life. Not a good image to have in 2012.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:17 AM
Well this should make things fun and interesting.
Barring some type of felonius (sp?) activity, I think all late teens, early 20′s behavior should be absolved from a presidential campaign.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:17 AM
Also, I can’t imagine going to a HS that looks like the one Romney went to. It’s straight out of Toy Soldiers. That life is so different from the one I grew up with, and I grew up what I think was a privileged life.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:17 AM
They used their amnesty. Amare is untradeable. So the decision is made.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:18 AM
So, are the Kings moving to the OC or are they staying in Sacramento?
May 10th, 2012 at 10:19 AM
Romney’s camp thinks Obama eating dog meat at age 6 in Indonesia is news, so I would say turnabout is more than fair play.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:19 AM
I love that Romney went to Cranbrook. It cost more for one year at Cranbrook than it does at the University of Michigan.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:21 AM
Yeah, Cranbrook is ridiculous. It really is. If Sparty were around, he’d tell you more. That’s his hometown.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:22 AM
I thought Puck Daddy had the monopoly on eulogies?
May 10th, 2012 at 10:23 AM
WHAT.THE.FUCK.
That boggles my mind.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:23 AM
Which bad contract did the Knicks amnesty??
May 10th, 2012 at 10:23 AM
Just the highly offensive ones. Seriously, fuck that guy.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:25 AM
Did any one catch Reggie Miller calling Melo fat last night?
May 10th, 2012 at 10:25 AM
It’s still confusing to me that they chose to amnesty an expiring contract so they could sign Chandler to a $55.5 million contract.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:25 AM
there’s no gambling at cranbrook…and i never slice.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:26 AM
Just asking here, would there be a way to unload Chandler & Melo for Howard & Hedu?
May 10th, 2012 at 10:27 AM
Maybe Lin, Amare and Chandler for Howard, Hedu and Nelson?
May 10th, 2012 at 10:27 AM
Yup. It’s exactly like you described it. One of those rich ass east coast prep schools. A very good friend got thrown out of there after his freshman year for selling drugs. Hilarious. Also, I hung out with a few girls at MSU who went to Cranbrook. Their parents were disappointed in them.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
Excuse you, Jersey, it’s called the Playoff Factory now.

Watson:
Is it the same cost to send a kid there when he’s a 7th grader as it is when he’s a senior in HS?
May 10th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
YYSA, hit us with a fair Melo trade.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:30 AM
The genius running the team thought it would be smart to amnesty 10 million of Billups deal so they could overpay Chandler. Mind you this was knowing very well that you have 100 million dollars wrapped up in a guy with bad knees that is aging.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:30 AM

Not sure about 7th and 8th grade. But I know the high school years are over 20K per.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:32 AM
Hahahahaha. That’s the best comment of the day.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:34 AM
Maybe Lin, Amare and Chandler for Howard, Hedu and Nelson?
I like it. Dwight would negate some of the massive defensive liabilities of Amare. Somebody run this through the trade machine (blocked here).
May 10th, 2012 at 10:34 AM
duffman is thrusting in the direction of cran…
sir, there’s no thrusting at cranbrook.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
Lin’s contract expires so it would ahve to involve a sign and trade. Jameer has an $8.6 player option next year (that will get picked up) so Lin’s contract would have to be near that.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
Lin and Nelson are free agents, so no.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
I mean no you can’t run it through the trade machine, they won’t let you put in expiring contracts.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
someone actually watched the games. The author of this thread obviously didn’t. The Knicks need a starting point, they have a capable backup in Lin. The chemistry issues between Amar’e and Melo is overblown. They’ll have to figure out how to get Stoudamire and Chandler to maneuver in the post when they’re out there together. When it was either one of them out there with Anthony, they worked fine, when it was all 3, it became cluttered.
May 10th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
This one works.
May 10th, 2012 at 11:02 AM
Carmelo Anthony’s annual first round exit is suddenly becoming my favorite May tradition.
May 10th, 2012 at 12:39 PM
1 option that would never happen, would be to ask melo/amare to restructure their deals.
That would free up some money to make a run at Nash or Goran Dragic. Again, I’m not sure either player, let alone one would. This would allow you to keep Lin as a backup (gasp!) and keep novak and jefferies.
A trade that would work is Amare for Okafur and Jack on New Orleans (money works via ESPN NBA Trade Machine). The Hornets, or whatever they get renamed to, will draft a PG this year so Jack becomes available. New owner wants a name to go with some young pieces…is Amare that guy?
May 16th, 2012 at 6:30 PM
You’re putting way too much stock in Novak. Yea he’s a great shooter when he’s open, but he can’t get himself open. He was 4/7 from downtown in the series…but with the amount of time he was on the floor he should have gotten way more than 7 shots. If anything Woodson made a mistake leaving him out there after seeing how tightly the heat were playing him, he certainly should not have gotten more time. If Novak’s not getting open shots it hurts the team to have him on the floor…he can’t move with the ball or without the ball, he’s too slow to recover loose balls or to beat people off the dribble (if he were even able to dribble), and he’s useless defensively. I love Novak, he’s a great a shooter and a hard worker but he doesn’t have the awareness or ability to compete in most aspects of the game. Anyone who would argue that is either not paying attention when they watch him play, or doesn’t really know what they’re watching when they watch basketball.
Novak’s the man, but he’s a totally one-dimensional player…and it’s a dimension that’s not worth making room for if he’s only going to give you 6-12 points a game for 20+ minutes of doing nothing every where else on the floor. No way Novak should be a starting anything, Amar’e shouldn’t be coming off the bench or leaving New York…him and Melo are both ridiculously valuable assets. They only have problems when one them tries to run the offense, sooo you get them a point guard who can run an offense that revolves around the two of them and they’ll be fine. Start writing about how to utilize both Melo and Amar’e at the same time, stop writing about how they get in each others way.
