The NCAA is Sniffing Around Nerlens Noel, the Kentucky Super-Recruit
Nerlens Noel is the top recruit in the country, and he’s headed to Kentucky. Noel is considered the replacement for Anthony Davis, and the Wildcats are pinning their hopes on another deep NCAA tournament run on Noel being a shot-blocking machine inside. But first, the NCAA is going to poke around Noel to make sure everything is above board. From Pete Thamel in the NYT:
A person who has been briefed on the N.C.A.A.’s inquiry said the topics officials were planning on inquiring about included Noel’s relationship with Chris Driscoll, a former Providence assistant who is close to Noel. Driscoll was barred this year from campus at the Tilton School, the New Hampshire boarding school where Noel has spent the past two years and is completing his final year of high school …
N.C.A.A. officials also planned to find out about Noel’s relationship with Errol Randolph, a former substitute teacher at Everett High School who is another of Noel’s advisers, according to the person briefed on the inquiry. Until recently, Randolph had a link on his LinkedIn page directing people to the Web site of the sports agency run by the prominent basketball agent Andy Miller. The link to Miller’s ASM Sports Web site has since been removed.
If you read this terrific story on Noel in March, you know there’s been plenty of shady activity around the kid throughout his high school career. (Sidenote: Noel is still not qualified, which is probably the bigger story right now. His school believes he’ll eventually qualify.) Kentucky fans are peeved at this report – at least a dozen have tweeted me Thamel vs. UK conspiracy theories – but the NCAA’s interest in Noel’s situation shouldn’t surprise anyone. Whether or not they’ll be able to unearth anything is another story. [NYT]

Was always clearly a walking recruiting violation.
A fact which makes ESPN’s decision to hire him as a guest blogger on recruiting all the more hilarious and prototypical of that organization.

Theo Huxtable’s barber still doing work I see.

I just hope PC doesn’t get any negative fallout from their former association with Driscoll.

Incredible flat top.

Not so perfect after all.
Fuck LinkedIn, every moron who is terrible to do business with will eventually send you no less then 5 linkedIn requests.

TBL your boy Matt Jones has already pointing out that they do these types of investigations with every top level recruit. Also he says Thamel has an anti-UK agenda. I don’t know if he does or doesn’t though.

As long as he keeps that bad ass hair cut all is well in the world.

Surprised Pete Thamel acted like this was truly “breaking news” last night, especially from someone who covers so much college hoops. This happens EVERY year. Pretty standard procedure actually.
May 9th, 2012 at 1:06 PM
Just leave the kid alone, the poor bastard will end up playing for the Bobcats anyway and that should be punishment enough.
May 9th, 2012 at 1:06 PM
truly an Eraserhead

This Youkilis for Dempster trade talk is very strange. Who the hell started it?

what would be the problem with say the top 20 or so recruits getting ‘audited’ by the ncaa? privacy issues or the default ‘not enough manpower’ crutch?
May 9th, 2012 at 1:08 PM
dempster has a ton of value; the youk part is strange
May 9th, 2012 at 1:09 PM
Has anyone ever used it to help them land a job?
I’ve only used it to investigate people I know.

Youkilis for Wolters, Huff, Barnes and Wheeler.

knitty, i have gotten clients off linkedin. not so much aggressively searching, as one time being found, and one time noticing an old friend was on there and he happened to just join a pub so i got all opportunistic and said congrats let me know if you need any freelance help
then i linked him 20 old stories and he made fun of me

Cubs and Youk. This seems to be the origin. Other outlets are picking it up too. The ESPN beat reporter for the Cubs is coming on to talk about it on the radio here shortly.
Here’s one for the White Sox, too.

I’ll bite. Why should they be treated differently than any other recruit?
May 9th, 2012 at 1:22 PM
It isn’t completely unfounded. We do have your former general manager and your starting pitching staff outside of Lester does kinda suck. Also, Will Middlebrooks is kinda the flavor of the week in Boston right now.
How’s Marlon Byrd working for ya? Chris Carpenter should be locking up that closer role any day now…

May 9th, 2012 at 1:26 PM
I think it would come from the angle of ‘these guys are more likely to be provided improper benefits’ and it would be an investigation of the schools recruiting the player than the player himself.
May 9th, 2012 at 1:26 PM
Youk has an expiring contract so that’s even more sense. Especially with it being a $13M option or $1M buyout next year. Dempster makes $14M this year. Salaries are basically a wash.
It just doesn’t make sense because Ian Stewart has been OK at 3B and just has an unlucky BABIP right now. Youkilis is not a long term solution at 3B. It might just be a fit for the rest of the year when they trade LaHair mid-season for young pitching. Could move Youk back to 1B.
May 9th, 2012 at 1:26 PM

well, they are highly sought after and the highly sought after are usually* sketchy on grades, being favored, have shady connections with aau folks who have shady connections.
if they are all good, what’s the problem? if they are not, the threat of audit would help set folks straight during HS.
plus, i was really asking what you guys thought of it as an idea
*cynical assumption

no, i meant auditing his HS academic file and looking into any questionable associations
May 9th, 2012 at 1:28 PM
I think Jim Valvano is rolling in his ESPN sponsored grave at the thought of more oversight into improper signings.

at some point they have to consider more people are long-term options than castro, jackson, and samardja. lahair is older but let’s say he’s got five years left. i think threeheaded theo monster is hoping fora title before five years is out
May 9th, 2012 at 1:31 PM
Aaaaah, in that case, I still don’t mind it. However, the net would probably have to be a lot wider than top 20.
May 9th, 2012 at 1:33 PM
oops forgot rizzo
May 9th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
LaHair is 29 years old, meaning he’s already peaked as a player, and is a career minor league journeyman. Sell high. Especially since the Rangers will be looking for a 1B fill at the deadline.
Mitch Moreland sucks.
May 9th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
no, i meant auditing his HS academic file and looking into any questionable associations
That happens anyway with the clearinghouse. If I understand the clearinghouse.
And everybody knows the Top 20ish recruits for four years in advance anyway. Calipari knew what he was getting into and felt comfortable with it.
In the end I don’t really care either way. The NCAA is a collection of fucks and I don’t respect anything they do in the name of the student athlete.
May 9th, 2012 at 1:36 PM
And more diverse ethnically to avoid “racial profiling” allegations.

Boom. Profiling was the first thing I thought of. Also, what is the Top 20? Who decides? Top 20 at what date? Top 20 of each class?

if racial profiling gets me a scholarship to a school that helps me be a pro and make lots of money, then profile me. we supposed to invent asian hoops stars?
and, sure, how do you pick the top 20 or 50? well, how do the recruiting sites do it?
May 9th, 2012 at 1:47 PM
AIM FOR THE FLATTOP!!!
May 9th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
Matt Jones isn’t biased or anything.
May 9th, 2012 at 1:54 PM
well, how do the recruiting sites do it?
I bet in some cases they are influenced by recruits “handlers.” I hate recruiting sites. Not a whole lot of transparency. There is also the “Notre Dame Effect.” If a big time school is after you, then your stock rises whether or not it is deserved.
if racial profiling gets me a scholarship to a school that helps me be a pro and make lots of money, then profile me.
I agree with that in theory. However, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson would be whooping up a shitshow and the NCAA is a cowardly organization and wouldn’t want to ruffle the feathers of those two.
May 9th, 2012 at 1:54 PM
you don’t think it’s strange?
Well, after reading comments I guess not. It just seems weird, ya know?

Right, glad that’s settled. LOL.
I hate that he’s considered the spokesperson for all UK fans. He’s not. Not even close. Maybe for the youngsters out there who have no sense of history and can’t form a complete thought without help, but not for all of us. Not by a damn sight.
So, so, so, so much that. I wonder how much digging Thamel did into Shabazz Muhammad background, for instance? While he may or may not have it out for UK, he does have an axe to grind with Calipari, that much is obvious.
May 9th, 2012 at 2:17 PM
Youk is one of my least favorite athletes of all time. Hate him to death.
May 9th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
His school believes he’ll eventually qualify.
This always makes me laugh just a little.
Which is it …
“Truthfully, this kid is really pretty much a dumb-shit and our staff is incapable of actually teaching anything, so no, we don’t think he’ll qualify.”
“After all that money that was donated on his behalf, we’re essentially required to pass him, no matter how stupid he really is.”
May 9th, 2012 at 2:29 PM

I’ve never understood this. I mean I know people dislike athletes for whatever reason, but he garners a lot. My dad can’t stand him. His reason? He has none.

I’m with you on this.
But I have a strong dislike for him and have no idea why. He just seems like a douche of the highest order. And that dumb-ass batting technique. Of course, my dislike for anything Boston except its seafood is pretty high, so I’m an outlier.

This has to be the least surprising news ever. Only thing surprising it it took them this long.
