NBA Mock Draft For 2012: Pre-Draft Lottery Version
NBA Mock Draft, 2012, 1.0 – March 1st
NBA Mock Draft, 2012, 2.0 – March 29th.
With the NBA lottery order set, it seems like the ideal time for a mock draft. The lottery takes place on May 30th, and then the draft is June 28th. Here’s a stab at what the draft might look like if the ping pong balls hold true to form.
1. Charlotte – Anthony Davis, C, Kentucky.
2. Washington – Brad Beal, SG, Florida. Third worst 3-point shooting team in the league adds a premier shooter. Love MKG, but I’ll lean Beal here.
3. Cleveland – Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, F, Kentucky. Cavs could draft for any position but PG.
4. New Orleans – Thomas Robinson, PF, Kansas. Like Drummond – think he’s got a higher upside – but they need scoring inside.
5. Sacramento - Andre Drummond, PF/C, UConn. With a Cousins/Drummond interior, will this team finally play defense?
6. Portland – Austin Rivers, G, Duke. Do they trade down for a point guard or reach for one? A Rivers/Matthews/Batum trio can score and defend.
7. Golden State – Harrison Barnes, SF, UNC. Warriors will need a replacement for Dorrell Wright, who only has one year left on his contract. Jury’s out on how Barnes will be as a pro, but being the No. 2/3 option should suit him well.
8. Toronto – Damian Lillard, PG, Weber St. Bit of a reach this high, but the Raptors needs are point guard and small forward, and I’m not high enough of the Joneses to grab either here.
9. Detroit – Tyler Zeller, C, UNC. The Pistons have Greg Monroe, who might be better suited to play PF. Should they go center or small forward? Zeller/Monroe is a nice C/PF tandem. If they take Perry Jones, they’ll regret it. Sleeper here: Meyers Leonard.
10. New Orleans – Kendall Marshall, PG, UNC. A backcourt of Marshall and Gordon is a strong one. Hornets play their Top 10 picks right, they should get two starters.
11. Portland – Jared Sullinger, PF, Ohio State. I think he could be like DeJuan Blair or maybe Corliss Williamson – solid contributor in the NBA for a long time. Could back up Aldridge, or start alongside him if they can’t get a center.
12. Milwaukee – Meyers Leonard, C, Illinois. Don’t need offense, but do need size inside (Brown/Udoh seem better suited for power forward). The risk – is he another Cole Aldrich or Byron Mullens?
13. Phoenix – Jeremy Lamb, SG, UConn. A steal this low. Suns need to hope Steve Nash sticks around, although that seems unlikely.
14. Houston – John Henson, PF/C, UNC. With Camby’s contract up and Dalembert possibly gone too, Henson could get a chance to start in 2012 and maybe finish in the Top 15 in blocks.
15. Philadelphia – Royce White, F, Iowa State. Huge fan of White’s work, and can see him playing both forward spots in the NBA. Yes, I’d take him over Terrence Jones and Perry Jones.
16. Houston – Dion Waiters, G, Syracuse. Insurance for injury-prone Kevin Martin.
17. Dallas – Arnett Moultrie, F, Mississippi St. The Lamar Odom they never got! Well, minus the prolific 3-point shooting. Long enough to play PF or center, and will fill the void of Brandan Wright (assuming he leaves).
18. Minnesota - Terrence Ross, SG, Washington. The 3-point shooter they lack; wouldn’t surprise me if he started over Ellington/Webster early next season.
19. Orlando – Perry Jones, F, Baylor. Would love to see him workout against Terrence Jones. How can you begin to guess which version of each Jones would show up?
20. Denver – Fab Melo, C, Syracuse. With a deep but injury-prone team, I’d peg their needs at SF/SG/C, with the latter listed in the event McGee gets big bucks from Portland or someone else.
21. Boston – Moe Harkless, F, St. John’s. Innate scoring ability who could become a very nice player in a couple years.
22. Boston – Doron Lamb, G, Kentucky. He won’t be the next Ray Allen, but he’s a tremendous 3-point shooter.
23. Atlanta – Tony Wroten, PG, Washington. As I tweeted last month, Wroten wanted to stay in college but was wooed because the Hawks are enamored with him. He definitely will not get past this spot.
24. Cleveland – Terrence Jones, F, Kentucky. He’s got the talent go in the lottery, and probably will. I just couldn’t find a spot for him.
25. Memphis – Quincy Miller, F, Baylor. With no pressing needs, the Grizzlies grab a guy who was never 100% as a freshman and might have been a lottery pick if he stayed another year.
26. Indiana - Festus Ezeli, C, Vanderbilt. A lot is up in the air for the Pacers after next season (other than Granger). Assuming they want to keep Hill, George and Hibbet, size would be a wise pick here.
27. Miami – Marquis Teague, PG, Kentucky. Heat have one more year with Chalmers/Cole, and Teague might be better than both of them.
28. Oklahoma City – Will Barton, G, Memphis. Not quite insurance for James Harden (who may bolt after next year), but Barton’s got a terrific skill set.
29. Chicago – Scott Machado, PG, Iona. Probably can’t afford to keep Watson, and Machado is more of a pure point guard than Lucas. Derrick Rose could miss the first two months of next season, and there’s certainly no need to rush the franchise back.
30. Golden State – Andrew Nicholson, F, St. Bonaventure. Had this pick in last mock draft, might as well stick with it.

In last post, but probably more appropriate in a BB post:
Great read on Greg Oden.
May 9th, 2012 at 3:24 PM
it’s 3:24 and internationals still are staying overseas.
/tbl’d
May 9th, 2012 at 3:24 PM
I am utterly befuddled by the above statement. It is literally a contradiction.
The lottery order is set, but the lottery is not for three weeks? Someone help me out here.
May 9th, 2012 at 3:26 PM
Just for clarification…is this what YOU would do in their shoes, or what you think they will do?
May 9th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
Agreed Milk Steak, that was a pretty good read
May 9th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
little of a, little of b…does it really matter without internationals though? seeing as 2/3 of this exercise is rendered invalid simply by omission…
May 9th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
The Wiz would be smart to go Beal over MKG, but Grunfeld will probably go for Festus Ezeli, mistaking him for another shitty int’l player.
May 9th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
Where is Steve going exactly? Toronto?
May 9th, 2012 at 3:29 PM
I dont think this has been clarified in any mock draft post
May 9th, 2012 at 3:29 PM
It’s not going to be a big draft for Internationals this year. Maybe one first-rounder.
No way Beal goes ahead of MKG and I’d be shocked if Robinson goes ahead of Drummond. Don’t think Rivers goes Top 10 either.
May 9th, 2012 at 3:30 PM
Biel > Beal > Veal
May 9th, 2012 at 3:30 PM
when’s the commenter draft?
May 9th, 2012 at 3:30 PM
well fuck you too then.
May 9th, 2012 at 3:32 PM
I always see comments like this (from multiple people, too, I’m not singling you out) in TBL draft posts. Besides Evan Fournier, what international player is going in the first round? It is an extremely weak international class this year, and not many Euros will even be getting second round consideration, let alone first. Could a Euro sneak in at the end of the first round? Sure. But nobody has any idea who that may be at the moment.
May 9th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
I have now read something on Grantland. Thanks a lot, Mark Titus.
May 9th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
Also, Rivers is not going anywhere near 6, and neither Jones will slip past 15, especially Perry.
May 9th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
na, i deserve to be singled out for that, DD.
May 9th, 2012 at 3:34 PM
There is no way A. Rivers goes top 10.
May 9th, 2012 at 3:34 PM
daily show and colbert report should be real interesting tonight. real interesting.
May 9th, 2012 at 3:35 PM
Yeah this is the weakest Euro prospect draft in a long time, that’s not really a valid chirp to throw at TBL for leaving them out.
HOWEVER. Continuing to say that Harrison Barnes is the answer for a team looking for an NBA caliber long range shooter is baffling.

cuz of the gay marriage comments by obammer?
May 9th, 2012 at 3:36 PM
Shit, so I’m going to have to wait until the second round for a team to draft a 5’11 unmotivated drunkard with a youtube highlight tape consisting of dunking on children in fake beards.
May 9th, 2012 at 3:36 PM
You’re old enough to know that you don’t draft for need, you draft for talent.
May 9th, 2012 at 3:36 PM
No way in hell. They’re redrafting Sean May.
May 9th, 2012 at 3:38 PM
tbl posting the OdenDong and Oden’s career tanking = coincidence? I think not…
May 9th, 2012 at 3:38 PM
Didnt the Warriors get the 7th pick or did I miss the meaning of your previous 20 posts on them?
May 9th, 2012 at 3:39 PM
cuz of the gay marriage comments by obammer?
uh huh.
May 9th, 2012 at 3:39 PM
Sure will be; might take a day for the GOP talking heads to explode first though

Bobcats in six.

“Very well, if that is the way the winds are blowing, let no one say I don’t also blow”
May 9th, 2012 at 3:41 PM
And both Rivers and Barnes will be terrible along with Kendall Marshall (who reminds me of that UConn guard that fizzled out in the pros).
May 9th, 2012 at 3:41 PM
The war on marriage has begun!
May 9th, 2012 at 3:42 PM
Sure will be; might take a day for the GOP talking heads to explode first though
fox might implode. even the female anchors have boners.
May 9th, 2012 at 3:43 PM
I could see Atlanta taking Terrance Jones and dealing Josh Smith as I assume he still wants out. Better yet, how about we trade Joe Johnson to someone…anyone for carton of cigarettes (for Zaza) and some fried plantains (for Horford) and call it even?
They tape at either 5:30 or 6:00, so they may wait until tomorrow to tackle this. That way it gives Tony Perkins, Bryan Fischer and everyone at Fox News to blow a gasket or two.
May 9th, 2012 at 3:43 PM
so if obama stumps for legalization (he won’t…since he has completely backtracked every single step of his pro-weed stance he supposedly had during the election), would the GOP say it’s “the war on the war on drugs?”
May 9th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
Sooo, yeahhh… this is actually still the Warriors’ pick at 7 right now. If the lottery pushes them out of this spot THEN it becomes Utah’s.
May 9th, 2012 at 3:44 PM

El-Amin? Marcus Williams? Tate Geroge? Ben Gordon? AJ Price? Chris Smith?
May 9th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
Double dipped, YES!
May 9th, 2012 at 3:45 PM
(he won’t…since he has completely backtracked every single step of his pro-weed stance he supposedly had during the election),
he has seriously backtracked on so much.

i know what side i’m on

May 9th, 2012 at 3:47 PM
Shepard Smith is wildly out of place in that station. He might even be their hostage.

Henson to the Pistons. Book it.
May 9th, 2012 at 3:49 PM
Probably said already, but this would be the Warriors.
May 9th, 2012 at 3:50 PM
el-amin was chubby
May 9th, 2012 at 3:50 PM
Marcus Williams… damn thats a long list of busts, although Gordon has been solid.
May 9th, 2012 at 3:50 PM
I even said it twice.
May 9th, 2012 at 3:51 PM
i can’t fault him for encountering political obstacles, but during the election, he was very pro-weed and said he’d respect the state’s individual decisions.
then comes 2010′s crackdowns. and 2011′s. what a cocksucker.
May 9th, 2012 at 3:52 PM
Ya Gordon isn’t really a bust and Price is a decent role player, I just listed the first few I could think of.
May 9th, 2012 at 3:53 PM

i cant either, but i am sure alot of people voted for him based on his perceived desire to swim against the tide.
May 9th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
Excellent…I should have just posted “Broccoli probably already said this…”
May 9th, 2012 at 3:54 PM
I’m more interested on which Seinfeld episode is on tonight than people talking gay marriage on the news channels.
May 9th, 2012 at 3:54 PM
Marshall is so similar to Marcus Williams it’s scary. Right down from the looks, their #’s, both lefties, same skin tone, same lack of quickness/agility and great passing skills.
May 9th, 2012 at 3:54 PM
What are the odds that a team could jump ahead of them into the top 3? like 1/5?
May 9th, 2012 at 3:54 PM
Machado will be a solid value for some team late in the first round if TBL’s approximation for him is close.
May 9th, 2012 at 3:54 PM
now hold on. who was bthcing in the roundup about obama being a coward and waiting until he was re-elected to do this?
mole?
May 9th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
same skin tone,
snuck that one in grand dragon
May 9th, 2012 at 3:56 PM
I would love for Marshall to fall to Phoenix at 13. He would be a nice pair with Gordon in Phoenix.
May 9th, 2012 at 3:56 PM
rip vidal sassoon
/jck is sad
May 9th, 2012 at 3:56 PM
Yep it was me. I was definitely not alone on that though, a lot of the “political experts” in the media were saying he would have to wait. I didn’t realize Biden made the comments he did, though. Good old Joe, that’s why he was my primary dog.

May 9th, 2012 at 3:59 PM
not harassing you mole, just wondering if you are now pleased, impressed…what is the opposite of your stance this morning?
May 9th, 2012 at 3:59 PM
Yeah I think it’s around 25%, but I also heard something on the radio that one team has made a jump almost every year for the past few years.
May 9th, 2012 at 4:02 PM
SHUT IT DOWN GUYS, ESPN FIGURED OUT WHY SEAU DID IT
wow. deep thoughts with duff.
May 9th, 2012 at 4:02 PM
The rookie who was drafted onto the worst NBA team of all time? Definitely a bust, unlike Greg Oden.
May 9th, 2012 at 4:03 PM
i thought we all agreed that bass players weren’t allowed to talk?
May 9th, 2012 at 4:03 PM
Well it’s a political move. I don’t think it’s as risky as some people will make it out to be, because the swing voters who would leave him because of that probably weren’t in his camp much anyway. It could hurt the black vote, but that will be offset. People overstate the impact of the black vote in 2008. The only group that saw a statistically significant increase in turnout was young voters, who he was in the most danger of losing because of backtracking on things. This could invigorate them back to 2008 levels or higher.
I think he would have waited until after the election, but his hand was forced.
May 9th, 2012 at 4:03 PM
What were the odds that TBL was going to forget about the Warriors considering all of the posts he made about them tanking? I’m going with 3/1.
May 9th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
What are the odds that a team could jump ahead of them into the top 3? like 1/5?
I think it’s 8.9% x 3 times.
/not a draftametrecian
May 9th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
Didn’t Duff heavily invest in some company like Apple or Starbucks? He’s got major scrilla beyond his music money.
May 9th, 2012 at 4:07 PM
That will be interesting to watch as the awkward old gentlemen sit at their podiums while big notecards are pulled out of oversized envelopes.
/and I die just a little more as the Suns logo appears second again.
May 9th, 2012 at 4:08 PM
he’s owning the issue now rather than letting an issue like this distract in November. It makes sense.
May 9th, 2012 at 4:09 PM
I’m with you, Spence. Whether or not it’s a weak international class doesn’t mean they were considered for a second before the post went up.
May 9th, 2012 at 4:09 PM
he’s owning it now, so when he gets rehired, he can ignore it?
May 9th, 2012 at 4:10 PM
Agreed.
May 9th, 2012 at 4:12 PM
Lol.
Here is what it’s all about, summed up by a NYT reporter, no less –
https://twitter.com/#!/jeffzeleny/status/200300692047540225
May 9th, 2012 at 4:13 PM
no, he’s owning now so that it’s an old issue come November, so that it won’t distract from the message they are putting it out there.
i don’t think he’ll ignore it in the next term if he wins re-election, but if there’s bigger issues to take care of that will happen first.
the only thing he can do is ask congress to repeal DOMA, then it’s up to congress and we know how well they do things.
May 9th, 2012 at 4:15 PM
he’s owning it now, so when he gets rehired, he can ignore it?
+ 1.
if/when the right does this, its a tragedy bomb of epic proportions.
see- maher, bill and olberman, queef.
/dont care, but like fairness
May 9th, 2012 at 4:15 PM
The first bit of good fortune happened when the W’s won that coin flip for the 7 spot, hopefully it wasn’t just to kick all us fans in the nuts with another team jumping up. The lottery should have happened already, no sense in waiting this long.
May 9th, 2012 at 4:19 PM
I agree with that assessment, Mike.
Don’t think it’s a bad move though, all things considered.
May 9th, 2012 at 4:19 PM
It will force Romney to differentiate himself and argue against gay marriage which no one can intelligently while galvanizing Obama’s base.
May 9th, 2012 at 4:19 PM
spencer where have you been playing I saw you said 15 rounds? Do you call 9 holes a round? or does it have to be 18. I consider 18 a round (so it counts towards handicap).
May 9th, 2012 at 4:22 PM
sleepy hollow (3), tanglewood (4…5 if you count 36 as two rounds), boulder creek, windmill lakes (2), wicked woods (3), fowler’s, aurora (2)…and i think im forgetting one or two. and actually, ithink that might be more than 15 rounds too.
regardless, ive played a metric shit ton. and what’s “only 9 holes?”
May 9th, 2012 at 4:23 PM
agreed. Mitt will probably come out strongly against it, but considering there’s still 6 months before the election, plenty of time to steer the election back to the issues and re-enforce that.
what would surprise me is if Obama campaigned on asking Congress to repeal DOMA as part of his message, that’s something I don’t think he’ll do.
May 9th, 2012 at 4:23 PM
oh yea…little mountain twice too.

Thats a good mix. I’m looking to go off tomorrow but think its gonna be a bit slow with the rain. <85 or bust.

May 9th, 2012 at 4:35 PM
noon. I am planning to bolt work at 11am, loosen up, putt as opposed to my usual death race to the first tee. I think it won’t rain (I saw 58 and clear) but I was hoping to play firm with some rollout.

They possibly can’t screw this up if they get the 1st pick
May 10th, 2012 at 9:43 AM
Andrew Nicholson will be picked in the late teens to early 20′s. He would eat Melo, Ezeli and Leonard (put up 17 and 8 in an off night against him this year)alive. Playing at a BCS school doesn’t equal NBA success.
