Absolutely, and smoking is a risk factor for many other cancers, and even non-fatal conditions like blindness (macular degeneration). Smoking is a significant risk factor for coronary artery disease, so to see an increase in CVD in a population which smokes less, is striking.

People die, people get weird diseases. What you do for a living can affect both of those things. Was this not known?

One additional note… they control for BMI I believe, and still find an effect. One interpretation could be that a 35 y/o former NFL player with a BMI of 32 might have trouble keeping that BMI from getting higher, than would his non-football playing counter-part.

The study also directly says that it is likely because NFL players smoked cigarettes far less frequently than the public at large during this time period and were in better shape. The former NFL players died of cancer at a much lower rate, particularly with lung cancer (16 actual vs. 52 expected).

The NFL players as a group were also less likely to die of coronary diseases, with one exception: cardiomyopathy.

Is cardiomyopathy caused by coronary disease, or all causes of cardiomyopathy (which I don’t think falls under the umbrella of coronary disease).

I think all the studies re: NFL are flawed due to the invasive culture of roids. These guys are a very unique subset so to compare them to any other is apples to oranges.
