Teenager With One Arm Throws a No-Hitter
Coleman Shannon was born without a right arm from the elbow down. Fourteen-year old Shannon hasn’t let that slow him down, and he is a star pitcher in Johnsonville, South Carolina. He recently threw a no-hitter, and also is a pretty good hitter.
Shannon’s inspirational story is reminiscent of major leaguer Jim Abbott, who was drafted 8th overall in the 1988 MLB Draft by the Angels and also played for the Yankees, White Sox and Brewers. Abbott threw a no-hitter in 1993 while a member of the Yankees. Like Abbott, Coleman Shannon is a left-handed pitcher and looks to have a bright future no matter what he ends up doing, as he has also learned to play the guitar and is driven to succeed.
On his no-hitter, Shannon shows he is already a pro when it comes to the post-game interview: “I got a bunch of people to back me up, that’s the way the game’s supposed to be played.”

Working in a kids hospital I can tell you that the ones I’ve come across that are dealt the greatest challenges like this young fella often show the greatest perseverance and attitudes. You find better perspectives from 14 year old kids with terminal illnesses or missing limbs than you do from some adults.
Hope this kid succeeds and makes it to the Show some day.

Shouldn’t he get a prosthetic arm? I’m sure someone in MLB could help him out.

Just another example of how a left hander will always have a job in MLB, in this case, even if he doesn’t have two full arms.

deaf kids actually have advantages playing baseball
it really is amazing what abbott did. i mean it’s one of those things that might lose its amazement over time, because it actually happened, but if someone were to have told you a similar story in fiction form before it happened, how many would have said, yeah i can see that?

Great story. Love how quickly he reacts after the pitch to get his glove on.

and also is a pretty good hitter.
I was wondering how he would hit and after watching the video, it doesn’t appear to be an issue.

Interestingly, Jim Abbott never played minor league ball. He went straight into the Angels’ rotation in 1989.

How so? He can still sit on his functioning hand to numb it.
/this response is based on my understanding of “the stranger” as described by Dave Chappelle.
