Notre Dame Will Wear Some Tacky Irish Flag Cleats Against Navy
All, College Football May 8th. 2012, 12:00pm
Adidas’ fiendish plot to destroy Notre Dame football’s soul continues. The Fighting Irish kickoff the 2012 season in Ireland against Navy. Players will be wearing this fetching footwear. Recruits love this sort of thing. The only question: does Notre Dame go full on asshole with the shamrock helmets as well or just stick with the goldgasm?

ewwwwww
May 8th, 2012 at 12:03 PM
I like em. Good for ND stepping out of the box a bit.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:04 PM
ha. and here I thought that Willingham had destroyed their soul.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:04 PM
Pretty sure the past four coaches have done a much better job of this.
Repeat this every time some old douche in the media takes a shot at new uniforms. Hey old man…they’re not doing this to appeal to you, someone who doesn’t matter.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:04 PM
wait, why are they wearing soccer cleats?
May 8th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
If there’s any color combo that goes well with navy/gold, it’s green/orange. Great design.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
Disgusting.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:06 PM
Methinks they’re not caring too much about matching with their unis here, and more about paying homage to Ireland.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:07 PM
Reminds me of cantaloupe.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:07 PM
I can’t wait to see what NEB does for their one-game thing this year. Knowing NEB they’ll change like one stripe or something like that. They have such an old, crabby base of fans.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:07 PM
I make better.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:09 PM
Hawt.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:09 PM
Well methinks it fucking sucks. Agree to disagree.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:09 PM
Concept is fine, execution is horrible. Considering your logo already has three stripes built into it, why not build off that instead of making it the whole shoe?
Plus they make me think of Congo’s flag which is green/yellow/red in diagonals.
Terrible all around.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:09 PM

Changing a school’s traditions based on the whims of an 18 year old kid is retarded.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:10 PM
I know Notre Dame and Michigan are slaves to adidas, but let’s show a little pride, guys.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:11 PM
It’s only cleats
May 8th, 2012 at 12:11 PM
Methinks they’re not caring too much about matching with their unis here, and more about paying homage to Ireland.
An homage. Yeah, that’s what it is. Not a marketing opportunity at all. It’s an homage.
/air wanking motion
May 8th, 2012 at 12:12 PM
Looks like something the U should be wearing.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:13 PM
OH THE HORROR!!! What??? They want to wear a different shoe one game a year? Well fuck me sideways…I’m done with them. DONE!! If they won’t wear the same cleats each week then I just don’t know what to do with my fandom.

Basketball schools tend to take desperate measures to remain relevant and “flashy” in football.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:13 PM
Can’t it be both?
May 8th, 2012 at 12:14 PM
Is it, though? Are you sure it isn’t the systematic destruction of all things tradition at Notre Dame?
May 8th, 2012 at 12:15 PM
A little bit of this.
But mostly this.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:15 PM
It’s only cleats
This is also true. I don’t this is as much an abortion as the shamrock helmet. I just loath the “recruits like it” argument.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:16 PM
I think the concept of tradition appeals to a certain type of personality irrespective of age.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:17 PM
OH THE HORROR!!! What??? They want to wear a different shoe one game a year? Well fuck me sideways…I’m done with them. DONE!! If they won’t wear the same cleats each week then I just don’t know what to do with my fandom.
I don’t so much hate the cleats in this case. Just the concept that you espouse. Basically I hate everything that you stand for.*

May 8th, 2012 at 12:17 PM
Tradition is overrated. It used to be tradition to burn women at the stake if we thought they were witches back in the medieval days. Sometimes it’s good to break them.
/slight hyperbole
May 8th, 2012 at 12:18 PM
If Tom Brady were wearing them, the internet would have an e-boner
May 8th, 2012 at 12:18 PM
I think it’s funny that they’ll run with that concept for the unis, then pump the kid up on school tradition* during the recruiting visits.
/I’ve never been recruited, so I only assume this is what happens
//along with the slutty co-eds
May 8th, 2012 at 12:18 PM
I think the concept of tradition appeals to a certain type of personality irrespective of age.
Yes I agree. I’m certainly not saying that I’m 100% right and everyone else is 100% wrong. But I think that the kids play for the school and what it stands for. The school shouldn’t change it’s image to make some adolescents happy. What else should we dispense with because 18 year old kids think it’s stupid?
May 8th, 2012 at 12:21 PM
Wait, a football game in Ireland? Why hasn’t the NFL thought of this? Dubliners would be all about it.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:21 PM
Yeah…they really don’t, though. They play where they feel comfortable with the coaches and where they can play. Does tradition get you in the door? Of course, but that’s about all it does. You still have to have the coaching staff and opportunity to play relatively soon for 90% of these kids.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:22 PM
I really do like the cleats. I just feel off about ND wearing them. I think I’d feel differently if it weren’t for the shenanigans with the helmets last year.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:23 PM
Uniform changes are fine, as long as they’re tasteful and not overboard.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:25 PM
I so want NEB to come out to something like this when they do their one game change, but I know that’s not going to happen.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:25 PM
The question no one is asking is how these things will hold up on a scissor lift in 50 mile per hour winds, pretty important…
May 8th, 2012 at 12:25 PM
Luckily the U steps out of the box with the Nike Pro Combat instead of these Leprechaun footpads.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:26 PM
michigan’s would be on a similar path if they had a soul to begin with.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:26 PM
The Italian Catholics will appreciate them.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:27 PM
i prefer subtle changes to shading and striping and shit like that. wholesale changes remove the safety net.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:27 PM
Football: where a 17 year old kid is more likely to be enticed by a shoe than the fact that the shoe exists because you would be getting to play a game in Ireland, where you will be getting a free vacation.
Slaves these days, their priorities, smh.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:27 PM
Yeah…they really don’t, though.
So you’re saying that tradition and the school’s reputation mean nothing to any 18 year old kid anywhere? Might want to watch the end of the next Army-Navy game if you really think that’s the case.
And it extends beyond the service academies. Why do players get hyped up to beat a rival program? Why does Michigan-Ohio State matter? USC-UCLA? Texas-OU? Rivalries evolve from geographic, social and academic differences. The kids may not readily think of that when yelling out “It’s 5:15 and Michigan still sucks”, but they wouldn’t have the attitude they have without that base in the first place.
I’m not so naive to think that the majority of recruits don’t pick a school based on a coach. SMU lost it’s best recruiter to UCLA in the winter and then our three best recruits followed him. But I think it’s silly to make an across the board statement either way.

May 8th, 2012 at 12:31 PM
I’m talking big boy football, not sentimental football. All due respect to Army and Navy, but if they didn’t have those names on their helmets, no one would watch them play football as they’re terrible.
Sure, those games matter, but when those schools have shitty coaches, they don’t get the talent (see Rich Rod or any coach before Mack Brown at Texas). Tradition gets you in the door, coaching and winning gets the kid to sign on the dotted line.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:31 PM

Right. So schools should cater to that attitude? Seems like a poor idea to me.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:33 PM
Prime example was Cal this past year. They lost their ace recruiter 2 weeks before signing day and what did 3-4 of his kids do? They followed him to Washington and dropped Cal in a heartbeat.

I don’t disagree with any of that. But selling out tradition to 18 year old kids who usually wouldn’t know a profound thought if it took a shit in their lap is just plain stupid to me.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:36 PM

May 8th, 2012 at 12:40 PM
Are you really selling out tradition by wearing these cleats for one game? That seems like a pretty big jump to conclusions.
No. I’ve said more than once that I don’t really mind the cleats. I’m disagreeing with your position on catering to 18 year old kids who don’t know shit.
May 8th, 2012 at 12:40 PM

It’s still a choice of university made by high school seniors. The kids who choose to go to a service academy, whatever the reason, accept that in going there they will lose some of their identity to take on that of the academy. It’s an extreme example to be sure, but Husker, your assertion was a blanket statement saying that all 18 year old kids think the same way. And that’s simply not the case. The university, any university, should sell itself based on what it stands for, not what they think the kid wants to hear. And if that doesn’t appeal to kids these days, that strikes me as a societal issue.
As johndewar said earlier, the importance placed on tradition appeals to some people more than others. But even those who deny its importance can’t help but participate in it. Rivalry games, as I mentioned earlier, are the most outward manifestation of that.

I have no problem with small changes. I do have problems with wholesale changes. I’ve made that qualification several times. I think these cleats are tacky, but it’s one game and it’s to a purpose. The Notre Dame shamrock helmets though are just ludicrous to look at. As is every uniform that Oregon has worn in the last 10+ years.

cats are cool because they are a mini version of lions and tigers. i know dogs are cousins of wolves, but there are so many btreeds that look like rodents or mops that the connection is not in your face. cats look like big cats, unless they’re too furry or have no fur, and that’s a minority
our brindle short-hair stalks and pounces and get the night time crazies, grabs your hand and ‘disembowels’ your arm with its back legs

Ladies love the scruff.

Pretty sure the perfect example of this is the Tyrus Thomas-Blake Griffin comparison. Still pissed I missed that post.

Here I am, just trying to get noticed, and everyone keeps pointing out the flaws in my logic.
It’s just not fair.

Still think he’s a highlight reel and merely an above average basketball player. The Tyrus comparison did make for a great meme though.

Ladies will love what I tell them to love when I’m slurring nonsense at them in bars.

2 children is more than enough for me.

I think you may be onto something, though I’d say he’s a bit better than above average. His game does need a ton of work, though.

there are times when being outnumbered has its drawbacks, no doubt

2 kids is way more manageable than 3+. I also think a family of 4 is plenty big, but I get that others like a larger sized family.

BITCH, THESE ARE TIMES WHEN YOU NEED A DOG!!!!!!
May 8th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
Not necessarily – we spaced ours out. Big bro was taking care of little bro early on. Sis in the middle has been higher maintenance than both boys combined, but she’s got me wrapped.

we held off getting pets for a long time because we knew they would be like another kid. the cat is less so. kids plus pets = 6

As long as she does the same with her boyfriends when she’s older, you’re golden.
