I follow Turkish football very closely. First of all there are a couple of things wrong with this article – it wasn’t dirty n—- , it was f—ing n—– that was the words that were used.
Secondly, the ban was for insulting Zokora. If it had been for racism he would have received a much heavier ban.
The problem in Turkey is that in the last few months the Turkish FA have been making some absolutely ridiculous decisions, which have all been in favour of one particular team – Fenerbahce, who Emre plays for.
Among these decisions is a decision to ban one of the Fenerbahce directors for attempted match fixing, while not punishing the club, because (and this is the literal phrase they used) “it was not recorded in the minutes of the meeting of the club board of directors that he should try to fix the match”!!!!!
This match fixing thing is the reason Fenerbahce were kicked out of this season’s champions league. And EFA are currently looking into it very closely. And the result of the match fixing (several matches in fact) was that Fenerbahce won 16 of their last 17 games last season and pipped Trabzonspor to the Turkish championship on goal difference. So there is a lot of bad blood between the clubs.
What made things even worse, was that a lip reading expert was called to testify as to what was said, and his report was leaked as having confirmed the racist comment. Despite this, Emre was still only punished for insulting language rather than racism.
So, while I cannot excuse Zokora’s behaviour, it is possible to understand it. He is trying to get justice in his own way, because it is obvious he is not going to get it from the Turkish football authorities (hence possbily the reason the referee did not send him off, as it could have caused a riot).
