The Grizzlies Have Folded Late Twice Against the Clippers. Where Has Tony Allen Been?
As a Clippers fan* I’m not complaining, but if you’re a Memphis fan, how jammed up are you about the rumored tug-of-war between the coach and owner over the use of shooting guard Tony Allen? In last year’s playoffs, Tony Allen was a lockdown defender. Full of energy and hustle and confidence, Allen was a big reason (Zach Randolph was the biggest, though) the Grizzlies upset the Spurs in the first round. But in this year’s first round series against the Clippers, Allen has been invisible.
Allen played just 17 minutes in game three, and wasn’t on the floor late when Chris Paul took the game over. The Grizzlies instead have opted for the lineup of Conley, Mayo, Gay, Randolph and Gasol. Last year, when Gay was out injured, Allen averaged 26 minutes a game in the playoffs; he’s only played that many once so far in the Clippers series. Memphis could be up in the series 3-0 if not for two very poor 4th quarters.
You’ve got to play Conley and Gay, and unless you want to go small – probably worth a look; it’s not like they even get the ball to Gasol in the 4th – the decision seems to be Allen vs. Mayo. In game three, Mayo was 1-of-8. He’s shooting 33 percent in the series. Is lack of leadership the issue? Wonder if we’ll see Allen in crunch time tonight if it’s a close one.
* Since 2010, when Blake Griffin started dunking. Yes, I own a Blake Griffin t-shirt.

That’s a good question. Allen has worked thru a minor knee injury picked up late in the regular season. In parts of Game 1, he tried to chase Paul around but wasn’t very effective staying in front of him.
Maybe Hollins thinks Mayo is due for a good game shooting tonight, and will stay with him late instead of Allen.
Still rooting for the Grizz, but I have a feeling the Clippers are gonna get off to a great start & cruise to a win. Being down 3-1 is gonna be tough for the Grizz to overcome.

Spurs are going to boat race* whoever wins this series next round.
*Assuming one of the top 3 players doesn’t get injured right before the series starts like last year.

Well, we already know what size it is…

The last 11 minutes of the 4th quarter, Chris Paul made 1 FG and had 1 assist.

Yeah puts an alternate spin on Oh man, I shot Marvin in the face.

May 7th, 2012 at 8:47 PM
wait, other people didn’t become Blake Griffin fans when he started dunking on the league?
well, considering he sat out until about 630ish remained, that’s not a surprise. but when did the FG/assist come? Back-to-back when the game was 80-80 (i think). maybe 80-78 memphis lead.
May 7th, 2012 at 8:55 PM
I think the difference is between being a Blake Griffin fan, and being a Clippers fan (as you said in the post) since you’re a Knicks fan. I don’t see anything wrong with enjoying watching another team play. And also people here just love bitching about Griffin for the same reason they love bitching about everyone else. I’m biased though.
Still, where’d the lighter fluid come from?

Recent comments doin work tonight. Apparently Yolanda figured that google thing out and found an old post about her. Look out bitches, she’s pissed.

Yes. Somebody tweet at NDUB at tell him to get in here ASAP.
May 7th, 2012 at 8:59 PM
I’m not at all a Blake Griffin fan, actually. He doesn’t do anything for me.
I’ll take the footwork of Kobe and Melo, or LeBron and Rose going to the bucket, or Rondo’s passing or (name a million other great things about the NBA). Dunks are cool, but Griffin doesn’t do a ton more than that very consistently. I also find it funny that a couple of Griffin’s most celebrated dunks were clear offensive fouls.
May 7th, 2012 at 9:01 PM
Yep, right after Bledsoe took the game over with a bucket and an assist too.

Scalia, if you don’t think CP3 is the clutch guy on that team, i can’t help you.
Also, don’t forget the crucial Reggie Evans put-back.
May 7th, 2012 at 9:23 PM
chicago – as a guard, I too am a huge Rondo fan. But he plays for the Celtics. I can’t wear Boston gear in any capacity.
I was going to get a CP3 shirt but they were sold out after the trade, so i picked up a Griffin one.
May 7th, 2012 at 9:27 PM
He’s certainly their best player, no question. Nobody ever said anything to the contrary and that really isn’t the point here. But, saying he took over that game in the 4th quarter when he had a bucket and an assist is stretching things a bit to fit your narrative.
May 7th, 2012 at 9:28 PM
THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE.
May 7th, 2012 at 9:31 PM
Hey I’m not faulting you for digging Griffin, he’s just not my style. I think I was just surprised that you would go as far to specifically label yourself a “Clippers fan”. I get it if you like watching them play and will root for them the rest of the way, but have you adopted them as a second team? If so, I was just taken aback from witnessing your Clippers fandom coming out announcement.
/wouldn’t fault you for it based on the state of the Knicks

I was just giving you casual shit. Chill. It is TBLAD.
Also, can you free Dirt? It has been a week and he served the sentence you gave him. One week. And he even apologized/clarified his wrong-headed post with an immediate post. He screwed up. He apologized. Also, bring back Yardwork and the PM Round-up.

I never said I thought NYC wasn’t the biggest city in the US. But lots of people + tall buildings does not = good sports teams. Plus, I always give TBL and other NYC sports fans shit. Why? Because it’s fucking fun. That’s why.

“Tall buildings does not equal good sports teams”
I laughed out loud at that. Hilarious, actually.

May 7th, 2012 at 11:46 PM
Every vote Lionel Hollins got for Coach OTY seems like theft now. The team’s best defender is chained to the bench in crunch time, while CP3 is eviscerating them. They’ve seen that the Clipper Bigs cannot hold Marc Gasol, yet Gasol doesn’t have double digit shot attempts in the fourth quarter of all three games total.
Everyone except Hollins seems to know what the Grizz need to do to win.

I hear ya. I couldn’t bear to watch the OT. You just knew the Grizz were gonna have a couple of bad offensive possessions, get behind & never catch up. They gotta have game 5 on Wed night.
