Cole Hamels Admitted to Plunking Bryce Harper on Purpose
Cole Hamels threw a 93-mph fastball that hit Bryce Harper in the first inning of last night’s game in Washington. Following the showdown, rather than professing the usual laughable innocence that typically comes with a plunking, Hamels was thoroughly honest:
“I was trying to hit him,” Hamels said. “I’m not going to deny it. That’s just — you know what, it’s something that I grew up watching, that’s what happened, so I’m just trying to continue the old baseball — I think some people kind of get away from it. I remember when I was a rookie the strike zone was really, really small and you didn’t say anything just because that’s the way baseball is. Sometimes the league is protecting certain players and making it not that old-school, prestigious way of baseball.”
Good for Hamels. It’s rare to read such a forthcoming quote, and it’s certainly fun to see some “old time baseball.” If Reggie Dunlop were still around and managed to get his hands on that quote, I have no doubt the old man would stand and applaud, and then check the living hell of the first person he could get his hands on.
Some members of the Nationals disagreed with Hamels and felt that the beaning was the Phillies way of recognizing their sudden presence in the NL East, something that has never existed in the past. But I don’t buy it. I see a 19-year-old rookie playing baseball with dizzying flair, and some cranky veterans getting irked by what they see. Nothing more, nothing less. Remember when Buck Showalter got mad that Ken Griffey Jr. wore his hat backwards during batting practice at Yankee Stadium? It’s a similar situation, and much like that one, it will pass.
The beauty of the beanball was Harper’s response of stealing home in the same inning. If that isn’t the most magnificent, ballsy counter-punch to being hit by a pitcher, I will gladly sew my head to the carpet for the remainder of the day. What a player, and a what a tremendous way to begin a fun new rivalry.
Here’s the aforementioned moment where Bryce brought the grapefruits. Better watch it soon, MLB vultures will be scrubbing it from existence in less than five minutes, if they haven’t already:

not gonna lie, harper stealing home on that pickoff was AWESOME.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:04 AM
I’m a baseball traditionalist, but what’s good about Hamels admitting a plunking for no reason?
May 7th, 2012 at 10:04 AM
At least Cole Hamels is playing the game the right way!.. or something…
May 7th, 2012 at 10:05 AM
The steal of home was a perfect FU to Hamels.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:05 AM
It’s hard to hate the kid.

Griffey. Legend.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:07 AM
Admitting to a welcome to the big leagues plunking is kinda cool.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:08 AM
I’m all for Hamels plunking that punk Harper and if Harper can rise up against the animosity mounting up against him, good for him.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:08 AM
god damned i loved this paragraph.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:08 AM
Even in slow motion you can tell how fast Harper is. Hope he lives up to the hype.
/Rangers v. Nationals in the World Series
May 7th, 2012 at 10:08 AM
Nationals should be proud that someone actually considers them a contender. It’s too bad that the locals are not behind this team enough.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:09 AM
My god, this sport is so damn white.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:09 AM
Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball for 64 was the best. Griffey hit a HR 9/10 times.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:09 AM
he’s like cam newton…impossibly arrogant, impossibly talented, took the back roads and look like they could own the game. modern day tiger woods-es without the PR machinations.

May 7th, 2012 at 10:12 AM
Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball for 64 was the best
The trades were ridiculous. I had basically every All-Star on the Cardinals.
/still remembers hitting walk-off against my Dad with Omar Vizquel

May 7th, 2012 at 10:12 AM
Love it. I love everything about this. Props to Hamels for owning up to plunking him, and props to Harper for making them eat crow.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:13 AM
I had Griffey baseball for SNES, where you could bend the curveballs from one side of the batters box to the other and back.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:14 AM
Agreed. It wasn’t like Harper did anything to warrant a plunking. I guess it would have been shits and giggles if he happened to get his hand broken on that pitch. My own thought is the best revenge would have been running out to the mound and stomping the shit out of Hamels.
/plunking hitters is sooooo fucking cowardly
May 7th, 2012 at 10:16 AM

/pours one out
May 7th, 2012 at 10:17 AM
The mentality I guess. Taking offense with Griffey wearing hat backwards, not allowing players to celebrate too much when they homer without the opposition getting their panties in a wad. Taking offense whenever someone “flashy” comes in. Constant chatter about “right way to play the game” or “have respect for the game”. Y’know, stuff only old white people care about. It’s like anything other than the norm is always frowned upon.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:18 AM
Umm…yeah…this actually happened.
I love HuskerDawg’s grim links.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:19 AM
Agree. It’s like when Euro soccer fans make monkey calls or throw bananas on the pitch whenever a black guy hits the field.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:20 AM
Imagine he gets thrown out at the plate? He stole Ric Flair’s grapefruits.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:20 AM
I agree.
Roy Halladay would have NEVER owned up to it. He just would have glared at the reporter who asked if it was a purpose pitch and that would have been his answer.

May 7th, 2012 at 10:20 AM
Huh? where did that come from?
May 7th, 2012 at 10:21 AM
not necessarily surprised…spiritual enhancement via cannibalism is still alive and well outside our little ‘murrican bubble.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:21 AM
Except that Hamels actually has to stand up there with a bat in his hand and accept the possibility that he, too, could get thrown at.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:22 AM
It happens in Spain often, actually. Euro’s are just as racist as Americans, even though they like to think otherwise.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:23 AM
didn’t it happen rather viciously and recently somewhere in GB or ireland?

/team the hound
May 7th, 2012 at 10:24 AM
Hamels shouldn’t have admitted to intentionally plunking the kid. Bud is going to see to it that Cole misses his next start. I’ve got no problem with him sending a fastball to the meaty part of Harper’s body but just lie about it. Say it got away from you so that you don’t hurt your team later on.
Harper’s defense has actually been the most impressive part of his short stint in the show so far. Watching him and Ankiel throw lasers from the outfield has been fun.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:24 AM
Okay, that’s fine. I’m not even arguing against that. We are talking about baseball and the allergy that sport has towards individualism. When europeans throw bananas at african players, they’re not doing it because they don’t agree with those players individualistic attitude. They are doing it because they are racist pricks.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:24 AM
If Hamels really wanted to channel “old-time baseball” he would have told everyone he pitched the entire game on coke or LSD.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:25 AM
Wouldn’t be surprised. Demarcus Beasley had his car fucked up and had racist phrases and shit drawn on it when he was playing in Scotland.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:25 AM
Wonder who plunked him in his “welocme to the big leagues” moment in those great old days he speaks of.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:26 AM
It’s going to be hard for Rizzo to convince Davey Johnson that he wants to send the kid back down. They get Zimmerman back on Tuesday. With Werth breaking his wrist last night (that was gruesome) I think we’re going to get another 6 weeks of Bryce no matter what.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:26 AM
It was 93. People who are offended by it need to relax. It is baseball. It will always be baseball.

May 7th, 2012 at 10:28 AM
Y’know, stuff only old white people care about. It’s like anything other than the norm is always frowned upon.
Idiotic. Players of all races respect the code of the game. Bob Gibson was #1 Code Guy and he was as far from whitey as possible. If a player doesn’t like the treatment, he has many outlets to take matters into his own hands. The game polices itself just fine for the most part.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
i think that’s less a symptom of white-ness as it is a symptom of american sports culture. it’s like that throughout…invidualism is stunted in lieu of increased marketability and corporate banality. it’s easier that way for the athlete than it is to stand up and defend yourself when the majority of athletes seem quite insecure due to a childhood filled with handlers and sycophants.
even in invididual sports like tennis and golf, you see this…players adhering to a template designed in some sports company’s headquarters. id argue that MLB is less susceptible to this than the NFL, though.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
Old Hoss Radburn, of course.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
In reality, it probably had more to do with the Phils being babies about losing two in a row to the Nats and being in last place. Baseball players are such pussies.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
/+1 rail of that good shit that got Dave Parker and the Pirates busted in 1985
May 7th, 2012 at 10:30 AM
No doubt. The Phils are scuffling and the fact is, the Nats have played them pretty hard pretty much every year since they popped up in DC.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:30 AM
Is there video of the run from the third base side camera in real time?
May 7th, 2012 at 10:30 AM
Ofcourse I’m generalizing and people of all races have “those kind” of people who are uptight and want to go back to the “good old days”. But come on, who is more likely to think that the sanctity of the game is compromised based on how a player wears a hat, a old white guy or a young black one?
May 7th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
Actually, I think you were talking about how “white” baseball is.
/white people apparently can’t be individuals
//my apologies for butting in – go about your business
May 7th, 2012 at 10:32 AM
This division may actually be the toughest in baseball now. The Braves are off to a solid start, the youngsters on the Nationals are producing, the Marlins have won 6 in a row and you knew that talent wouldn’t stay dormant for long. The Phillies need the right side of their infield back in a bad way. At least they get Cliff Lee back on Wednesday. There’s 4 teams that could have a shot at the playoffs here though.
The Mets still suck of course. Every division has a bottom feeder though.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:32 AM
It is? I’m having an easy time of it.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:33 AM
Listen I think we can ALL agree that white people get the short end of the stick in this country. Let’s move on, people. They just want us to fight together, gotta be better than that, be the smartest white people you can be.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:34 AM
Reminds me of when Deion Sanders broke in to the majors with the Yankees and drew a dollar sign in the dirt at home plate right in front of Carlton Fisk.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:34 AM
golf…only it’s how a young white guy wears a hat compared to how an old guy wears a hat.
and the young guy’s hat is only acceptable if it’s still marketable.

Hey man, we are lot less racist than spaniards or italians. It still happens, but black players getting abused in germany is a rare thing. Mainly it happens in former east german towns. Who are clearly still behind west germans when it comes to their views on race and the world in general.

May 7th, 2012 at 10:38 AM
If this were old time baseball the columnists and writers would look the other way when the ball players were getting drunk, high and laid by road beef I stead of writing about it on their blogs. Of this were old time baseball there would be no pitch counts and the only stats that mattered would be how many girls went down on Mickey the night before.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:38 AM

of course not…that’s just not profitable. we’re individually packaged, but part of a collectible, limited edition set that plummets in value with each subsequent new release.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
I’ve seen videos of that. Unless I’m mistaken, didn’t Fisk react like Deion drew the sign of the devil instead of the $ sign?
May 7th, 2012 at 10:39 AM

May 7th, 2012 at 10:40 AM

May 7th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
It’s a shame that they need 60,000+ Phillies fans to have their highest attendance of the year. What a joke franchise. They don’t deserve Harper or Strasberg.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
FWIW, I have no problem with Harper getting beaned if he actually did something, but it just was unwarranted. And bad haircuts and your helmet flying off aren’t justifiable reasons.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
Can we get a proper ranking of euro-racism, I’m a bit out of touch.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
Of this were old time baseball there would be no pitch counts and the only stats that mattered would be how many girls went down on Mickey the night before.
If this were old time baseball teams wouldn’t be invested in their players to the extent that they are now through free agent contracts and the team’s trainer’s job would be to call a pitcher complaining of soreness in his arm, a pussy.

What a joke franchise. They don’t deserve Harper or Strasberg.
The paint hasn’t even dried on the new stadium yet. Bud and MLB did it’s best to kill them when they were the Expos. They also came to a town that already lost 2 teams in the past. This town is going to take a long time to get behind the team. I think they owners have done a good job of trying to generate interest in them.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
Spain is No. 1. All other countries battle for second. Though really, I would say Germany should be lifetime No. 1 after Hitler, but I’m open for debate on that.

You should probably remove “white’ and “black” from the above statement, and I think you’ll have your answer right there.
Do you think Frank Robinson didn’t act like a miserable old ass towards younger players?
May 7th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
i know…i just remember how packed the vet was before rollins and howard and chase, etc came aboard. it’s a shame all those fans that weren’t supporting the phillies when they sucked now have to drive all the way to washington dc to watch their team play…you know, now that they’re good enough to support, and all.

Not so sure about that. I would go with the Italian Fascists; I recall an actual player putting up a fascist salute on the pitch and being unapologetic about it.

May 7th, 2012 at 10:47 AM
It’s the entire block of eastern european countries followed by spain and italy. Germany is way down the list. Really, we are not racist at all. I think that impression comes from the fact that we don’t smile or get overly friendly with strangers. But we do that with other white people too. We are not overly friendly people. But that doesn’t make us racists.
It’s that damn Hitler that messed things up. Bastard.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
I won’t deny what you’re saying here. Just is pathetic that they needed to create #Natitude and yet they couldn’t even get enough of their own fans to show up every game this weekend.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
We may have a new clubhouse leader, though there’s a Spanish team (I believe in La Liga) that does a Nazi salute as a celebration. Perhaps it was an Italian team, though. If Italians didn’t make some of the most delicious food imaginable, I’d probably hate them. As it stands now, though, they gave me the beauty of gelato, and for that I have to love them.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
Nationals Park is a really nice stadium. Ben’s Chili in center field. The Nats are generating somewhat of a following but I maintain that the transplant factor of DC inhabitants will prevent them from gaining a following like other larger cities. They’ll pack the place this year though. Competitive club.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
Really, we are not racist at all.
I’m not sure that there is any country that can make that claim.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:50 AM

how can we test this?
May 7th, 2012 at 10:56 AM
I’ll admit that my opinion of Germans will most likely always be of a negative persuasion due to WW2. Some things are just too terrible to forget, and in the grand scheme of things, 1938-1945 wasn’t that long ago.
May 7th, 2012 at 10:56 AM
There’s a weird dynamic in Germany. It’s almost like they want to be out-and-out racists like France and Spain, but they don’t act on it because of the past.

well, in the silly context of why pitchers plunk batters anyway, i have no problem with this. hamels is the vet, and a well-respected one, so the league is more his league than harper’s. know your place kid

I’ll admit that my opinion of Germans will most likely always be of a negative persuasion due to WW2. Some things are just too terrible to forget, and in the grand scheme of things, 1938-1945 wasn’t that long ago.
Do you harbor a dislike of Japanese people too? They may not have systematically killed as many people, but they did some pretty horrible things too.

May 7th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
It’s fucking terrible, actually. I played in a crazy competitive soccer league from 11-18 and was totally burned out from it when I went to college. There is literally no off season. Summer camps and tournaments, fall and spring seasons and winter indoor ball. Then I look at Tennis and Soccer professionally and I see the same thing. Football is now catching up with the 7v7 shit in the summers. They used to at least have that off, but that’s gone by the wayside as well.
I guess people read the site a lot after 5-6, because they post good, topical stuff at those times often.

It seems like if you’re going to harbor negative thoughts about Germans because they killed a lot of people 70 years ago, then you should hold a similar set of feelings against the Japanese for doing the same thing, albeit on a much smaller scale. Sexual peccadilloes or not.

May 7th, 2012 at 11:15 AM
I missed it. None of the articles I read mentioned exactly what he did and made it sound like he had some kiddie porn on his computer. Was there more to it than that? Not sure why it would matter if a recruit had his pic taken with a guy who had some 16 yr. old girl’s naked pic on his computer…

Weird. I hear kiddie porn and think far younger than 16. But as far as I know, the dude was like the ultimate fanboy (insert joke about OSU fanboys here) and he was seeking out these kids and shit. I agree that if you want to go to OSU (or any school) ruling them out because of one pervy fan seems odd. I wonder if there is more to the story, but they’re using Pervy McBuckeye as we all hate those people and will accept it as a good excuse.

May 7th, 2012 at 11:20 AM
It seems to me the recruit should be more freaked out if it was male porn on his computer (or if there were actually some problem involving human interaction as opposed to looking at young girls), which is why I’m curious for more details.

Again, it seems odd that this would be a reason to dump a school at all, but who knows. More than likely the kid was promised something a la “we won’t recruit another player at your position” and that turned out to be false and he got upset. Though perhaps he got the willies from being around this dude and the whole vibe was ruined. Who knows.

Truer words are rarely spoken in these parts.

Oh I know, but just like most NFL teams have bounty programs, only NO got caught. OSU just happens to have their ultimate fanboy get outed as a bit on the pervy side. I still think it’s odd that this is the reason the kid decommitted.
May 7th, 2012 at 11:35 AM
Football is now catching up with the 7v7 shit in the summers.
It has already caught up. Nov-Dec is really the only time off for HS/MS unless you play baseball/lacrosse.
“Optional” workouts, ya know?
May 7th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
Waiting For Next Year had a solid article on the Buckeyes player de-committment. His father said it was more of of his son re-considering OSU and had nothing to do with any particular aspect of the school or the coaching staff. Sorry, cant link to it.
May 7th, 2012 at 11:37 AM
which would be fine except for the fact his original statement was full of explosive rhetoric that hinted at the exact opposite of a calm, reasoned reconsideration.

I can speak from personal experience that the parents of high school kids who are shopping for colleges with their kids are hardly of the soundest mind 100% of the time.
May 7th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
Dude’s father has walked back his original statement significantly. OSU is still under consideration, though I wouldn’t bet on it.

Exactly. You don’t come out and say what the dad said and then follow it up with, “but yeah, they’re totally still an option.” Makes no sense.

He should have used “Having said that…”
May 7th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
what makes even less sense is considering penn state when you’ve done nothing to dispel the rumor that your kid is decomitting because of a pederast. one would think that’d be follow up question number one for a reporter.
May 7th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
Who cares
May 7th, 2012 at 11:45 AM
If what’s going around the internets is true, the dad and family weren’t as sold on OSU as the kid. Then the twitter perv happened and got the family all worked up and the kid gets weirded out (a perfectly logical response) and decides to repoen recruitement.
Most disturbingly, he’s considering Penn State, where he would shower in the same shower where a grown man screwed a 10 year old boy.
May 7th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
Exactly. It’s why I would guess there is more to this or it’s simply a case of a kid jumping in too fast. I saw where the No. 1 kid in the nation is now admitting he’s not going to announce until signing day most likely. The kid is a total stud, but holy hell does he love being the No. 1 player a bit much for my liking. He seems like a guy that will come in thinking he’s better than everyone else (even at Bama, where he’ll most likely end up) and that’s never a good thing.
May 7th, 2012 at 11:48 AM
He should have used “Having said that…”

I would bet that Penn State will be the safest campus re: pedophile issues in the country from now on. Not sure that makes up for them being the worst for 20 years. I have to say that the PSU fans on this board are always the first to make some SEC-schools-are-stupid comment, so them being knows as PedoBear U is rather funny,

May 7th, 2012 at 11:53 AM
(sits back smugly, singing “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad)
May 7th, 2012 at 11:53 AM
He’s all Bama, actually. It would be a shock if he doesn’t end up there. His HS coach was a starter on the 92 Bama title team and has been pushing him there from day one. The coach also steered his brother to Ole Miss over UGA because he didn’t want UGA having that card to play. This kid has a “top 5″ of like 8 schools (seriously). He adds a new one each week it seems. Again, he’s a stud (not Clowney good, but good nonetheless) but he comes across as someone who wants to be a star a bit too much.
May 7th, 2012 at 11:55 AM
That’s a quality individual right there.
May 7th, 2012 at 11:56 AM
ah…that makes sense.
frankly though, not sure why he’d want to go anywhere other than bama. guaranteed ticket to the league.
May 7th, 2012 at 11:58 AM
The most important people in recruiting are the mothers and then the head coaches. Win the first one and you will most likely win the kid, but if you win them both you’re golden. It’s a shame when coaches steer kids where they want them to go, but it happens all of the time.
May 7th, 2012 at 11:58 AM
i don’t like this meme and am sorry i started it
What a short life
May 7th, 2012 at 11:59 AM
True. What would concern me about him is that he’s already 6-5, 270. He’s going to get bigger for sure, so he’s not going to play OLB in a 3-4 as some have said. He’s either going to be a 3-4 5 technique guy or a 4-3 DT unless he stays at 270, but I don’t see how a 17-year-old kid will stay at 270 when he enters college.
May 7th, 2012 at 12:02 PM
if you can turn into a pass rushing threat at that size, you’d have every 3-4 defense with a good QB already on the roster beating down teams’ doors for a chance to draft him.
but i think, while offense in CFB is clearly ahead of the NFL, defense from the NFL has been finding its way into CFB…we’re seeing a lot more hybrid type defenses rather than base 4-3′s these days, and a guy who can slide inside on passing downs is quite valuable.
May 7th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
That’s UGA right now. They are a base 3-4, but when they play teams like Missouri, they’ll be in nickel so much. I have dreams of seeing them line up against Missouri with this front 4:
Jarvis Jones (6-3, 240) on one end with Cornelius Washington (6-4, 270) on the other with John Jenkins (6-3, 350) and Kwame Geathers (6-6, 350) at the DTs. Holy shit that would be glorious to watch.
May 7th, 2012 at 12:08 PM
get rid of the fatties and slide the DE’s down. fatties are a waste against mobile QB’s if the offense isn’t designed for any runs more than a draw inside.
May 7th, 2012 at 12:10 PM
That’s what will most likely happen, but MIZ needs to run the ball to succeed, and they wouldn’t run for shit right there. Jenkins is a penetrating T actually, while Geathers is more of the classic run-stuffing 3-4 Nose. Washington runs a legit 4.7 (if not under) so he would be hell for a running QB. UGA will be short handed in the secondary when they play MIZ (which is a concern for sure) but I like their DL to obliterate MIZ’s OL.
