Why Would Phil Jackson Jeopardize His Legacy to Coach Carmelo Anthony?
The Knicks are on the brink of playoff elimination – again. Their 87-70 defeat against the Heat was New York’s 13th straight playoff defeat (an NBA record for futility!) and dropped them into an 0-3 hole which they have zero chance of coming out of.
Carmelo Anthony was awful again, shooting 7-for-23 with five turnovers. For the series, he’s shooting a grotesque 34 percent and has 12 turnovers vs. six assists. Some people will defend him by saying, “he didn’t have Jeremy Lin.” Others might say, “Amare missed game three.” The Knicks were missing two starters!
Just stop it, please. He doesn’t make his teammates better (never has), he’s a ball-stopper, and here’s his wretched playoff history:
1-3 (vs. Minnesota; he missed the series clinching loss)
1-4 (vs. Spurs)
1-4 (vs. Clippers)
1-4 (vs. Spurs)
0-4 (vs. Lakers)
10-6 (beat New Orleans, Dallas, lost to the Lakers)
2-4 (vs. Utah)
0-4 (vs. Boston)
0-3 (vs Miami)
Career playoff record: 16-36. He’s gotten out of the first round once in nine tries. As many folks noted on twitter following the game three loss, Melo appears to be the new Tracy McGrady.
At this point in Melo’s career – he turns 28 this month – the question has to be asked: Can you build a team around him? If the answer is yes, then sure, perhaps Phil Jackson can name his price and be the next Knicks head coach. If the answer is no – which I suspect it is – then why would Phil Jackson ruin his legacy as the second greatest coach in NBA history to coach the Knicks?
Jackson had Jordan. He had Shaq. He had Kobe. Elite, Hall of Fame talents. He’s not delusional enough to think he can succeed in the East against the Bulls and Heat over the new three years, is he?

Dude has 11 titles, right? I don’t think he can jeopardize his legacy. Hell, Jordan played for the freaking Wizards and transitioned seamlessly into trying to be the worst GM in the history of sports yet he hasn’t done a thing to his legacy.
May 4th, 2012 at 10:28 AM
C’mon.
May 4th, 2012 at 10:28 AM
Phil can in no way tarnish his legacy at this point. I hate the guy being a Spurs fan but he’s got nothing to worry about, rings are rings.
May 4th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
I know this team has barely played together due to injuries and the lock-out, but this is a very poorly constructed team all the way around. While a starting over would anger the fans, it’s really what they need to do.

I assume you’re taking Red over him? I think I’d take Phil, personally. Coaching in the era of FA and winning the titles he won is more impressive than doing so when Red did, but to each his own.

LeBron has more playoff wins in Miami than Carmelo does in his career.

Jordan comp is terrible. He was how old in Washington?
Jackson won with Kobe, Shaq, Jordan. As soon as he loses badly with the Knicks, “he only won because he had the best players.”
May 4th, 2012 at 10:36 AM

May 4th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
Hate to break it to you Knick fans, but you guys are the only ones who think like this. Outside of NYC, nobody cares about the Knicks. Phil Jackson? Seriously?
May 4th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
The comp is terrible? You said Phil would ruin his legacy. Jordan has been an epic failure in pretty much everything he’s done post Bulls, yet his legacy is untouched. Are Phil’s rings going to disappear if he sucks with the Knicks for 3 years?

May 4th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
The Knicks are fucked because of Amar’e, not Carmelo.
Carmelo, Tyson, a real power forward, and healthy Lin/Shumpert is a good core.

BREAKING NEWS: To win a championship, you need great players.
There’s always been this argument against Jackson being a great coach. He just took over teams that had great players and coasted into winning titles.
May 4th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
I often wonder if J-Mac really believes what he writes. There is all kinds of simpin’ in the content of this post (and the follow-up in the comments for that matter.)
May 4th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
Good point. The guy tried to play BASEBALL at the height of his basketball greatness and not even that ruined his legacy.
May 4th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
Which is a dumb fucking argument. Red Auerbach (sp?) had the most stacked teams in the history of the NBA, yet no one mentions that. I agree that Popovich is an all-time great, but he had perhaps the best PF to ever play the game. Pat Riley had perhaps the best PG to ever play the game. To win multiple titles, you need elite players.

I was actually in attendance for the game where he hit his first home run. Dude looked so awkward in a baseball uniform.
May 4th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
Why the hell should the Knicks keep Carmelo? He’s a fucking loser. When’s the last time the Knicks actually won a playoff game? Like a decade?
May 4th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
Did anyone really expect this Knick team to do anything? Regardless of who they played. They are a team of mismatched parts. Anthony and Chandler you can keep as core, even tho Anthony is hugely overrated as a great player, but Fields, Amare, Bibby, Davis – garbage at this point. No team with JR Smith playing major minutes will ever win, has his best moments in blowouts, a straight gunner. Lin? whatever, unproven. Why would Phil Jackson ever go near this team. They aren’t close to anything.

Football is more about raw speed and strength, that doesn’t help you hit a jumper or hit a pitched baseball
This is an interesting point because it involves comparing skills that are highly relative to each sport. That also makes it problematic. It seems that the only thing which each sport has in common are that an athlete has to start with certain physical attributes. Some guys, no matter how much they practice, will never make it to the big time because they get injured easily/have reaction time that is a split second slower than normal, etc. But trying to argue that skills from one sport are not transferable to another is sort of like people asserting that the TV show they watch is better than the ones that others watch: it’s a near impossible argument to bring to fruition.
May 4th, 2012 at 11:02 AM

Much shorter distance for a baseball, and you’re trying to hit a round ball with a round bat.

78 feet versus 60 feet six inches. Still, you have less time due to the higher speed of a male professional tennis first serve. Agree on the racquet, but you also have to cover ground to return serve.

A&M’s tailgating scene is relatively new. Up until 8 years ago there was really nowhere for folks to set up near the stadium. Then they wisened up and took away all the freshman parking next to Kyle Field, opening it up to gameday traffic.
My 1st senior year (’99) I lived a block south of Kyle Field. We had a huge yard, and could haphazardly fit 14 cars in it. Which we did, for $15/ea. Ahh, the salad days.

A coach isn’t the highest priority the Knicks need to address, and either getting Amar’e and Tyson (not Melo) to either gel together on the court or trading Stoudamire are. Much respect to the terrific Heat defense. They shade their defensive help towards Anthony and still recover quickly enough to shut down the shooters.

Looks like Anthony does lead the league in 1 category. Something to build on?
/Durant is one more win away from leading his team to more playoff series wins than Melo.

The defense has been reminiscent of the ECF against the Bulls last year- they’re doing the same stuff to Melo that they did against Rose, just in different areas of the court. The design and execution is excellent towards stopping one dimensional teams like these Knicks and last season’s Bulls.

@UM Since I left Dallas and come up to the Northeast(5 years), I think I’ve eaten pizza from a chain restaurant once or twice. There are too many mom and pop places to sample for pizza, gyros, etc. Even if it’s a fail, it’s something different. But use yelp to guide you.

It’s stupid to leave the Celtics out of those teams that are a threat in the east, they’re more of a contender than the Bulls are at this point
