RIP Adam Yauch. Beastie Boys Founding Member MCA Has Died
Adam Yauch – better known as “MCA” – died this morning, losing his battle to cancer. Yach, 47, was diagnosed with cancer in 2009. In 30+ years with the Beastie Boys, Yauch, along with Mike D and Ad-Rock, sold over 40 million albums and released countless classic songs. The Beastie Boys were inducted into the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame last month. Yauch did not preform because of his illness.
The Beasties were a group that almost everyone reading this grew up with. While mainly considered a hip-hop group, they defied any single genre.
The Beasties on Soul Train.
Yauch also had plenty of ties to the sports world. Growing up in Brooklyn, Yauch was a Knicks fan and appeared in NBA Jam as an unlockable character in NBA Street Volume 3 as well as both the original NBA Jam and the 2010 version. Yauch also produced and directed Gunnin For That #1 Spot, a documentary about some of the top basketball players in the country. The movie features Kevin Love, Michael Beasley, Jerryd Bayless, Tyreke Evans, Brandon Jennings and Kyle Singler.

Junior Seau, Adam Yauch are two really strange celebrity deaths. I think the 3rd will be in the TV\Movie genre — keeping with the strange\kind of young theme I am going to go with Ted Mcginley.

Shadrach is such an underrated song. It kind of gets lost since it was on Paul’s Boutique and that whole album was sick, but that song is in my top 5 Beasties songs. Good pull CRM.

Yeah, not my favorite either, but it was tough to beat the four that precedeed Hello Nasty. Paul’s Boutique still gets heavy play at my house. My 9 and 6 year old sons are also big fans now.

still a good song to see live. Overall, not a band worth seeing or listening to anymore but they had a stretch run of a few good years before mainstream radio culture got to them.

No. No she really wasn’t.
May 4th, 2012 at 2:50 PM
Nah, Spencer and I are kindred souls in the Church of Golf. We can kid each other.
But seriously, fuck Zappa. Outside of Apostrophe and showing up Tipper Gore and the PMRC as a bunch of douchecanoes, he accomplished nothing. While Beefheart, who was so much further ahead in the avante-garde realm (and sheer songwreiting ability), got bupkis in terms of sales and recognition in comparison.

VU: hugely influential. Yoko: biggest influence was breaking up the Beatles.
Although honestly, Yoko gets a lot of credit in the art and art-rock worlds. But she also deserves blame for birthing Sean and unleashing Cibo Matto on the public consciousness.

Or, as we used to refer to her in the early days of MTV, “Nina Airhead.”
May 4th, 2012 at 3:01 PM
only thing i was offended by was you saying beefheart was a better songwriter…im not sure if you meant just rock songs and all that, but, in my eyes, zappa is the greatest composer post 1920 of any music, let alone classical or jazz realms.
zappa’s my fucking hero man…it’s all subjective and all that, and i know you weren’t being a dick, i just…damn man…shit.
May 4th, 2012 at 3:01 PM
Anyhoo, I still think Spencer deserves his own weeky golf post on TBL.
Just leave the kazoos in Joe’s Garage.
May 4th, 2012 at 3:04 PM
His music was interesting. In fact, I once wrote a high school essay on jazz-rock and how much of an influence Varese had on Zappa. But I just didn’t like his lyrics or singing.
And I always felt Beefheart got the short end of the stick in their partnership.
Ah, to each his own. Have fun cranking your new clubs this weekend!

Ill Communication was one of the first CD’s back in my ‘stealing from Columbia House/BMG’ days. RIP.
May 4th, 2012 at 3:07 PM
oh yea…me neither, and he didn’t either (…in the classic albums for apostraphe and overnight sensation, he even says that…he just wrote lyrics so idiots – his words – could have a human voice to relate to). most of his lyrics were total bullshit…some were even invoices for shipping shit. he just didn’t care about music with lyrics in there and the more ridiculous and offensive he could be, the better.
that’s part of why i loved his music so much, that juxtaposition between outrageously complex, intelligent, challenging music and the utter nonsense of the vocals.
OH HYELL YEA. you know this isn’t an issue.
