Dan Patrick is Pissed at ESPN (and so are other media members, too)
With all the concussion-related news in the NFL recently, former Super Bowl winner Kurt Warner has been in high demand. The bounty-loving Saints knocked him out of a playoff game two years ago, ending his career.
So Dan Patrick interviewed Kurt Warner Thursday, the day after Junior Seau committed suicide. Warner said he wouldn’t want his kids playing football. He’s certainly not the first former player to say this, but the news was picked up by ESPN, which credited Patrick’s show. Later, Colin Cowherd interviewed Warner, and Warner said the same thing.
Friday morning, Mike & Mike played a sound byte of Warner, but they credited Cowherd’s interview, not Patrick’s. Cue outrage!
Audio: Dan Patrick is angry.
(Note: Patrick and Cowherd were friends at ESPN. In our profile of Cowherd, he talked about Patrick giving him advice.)
Patrick isn’t the only media member who has voiced displeasure with ESPN lately. A few guys at CBS Sports – namely Jeff Goodman, Bryan Fisher and Brett McMurphy – have been railing against ESPN’s Andy Katz recently for reporting something they broke hours (or a day) prior. McMurphy has owned conference realignment in college sports, soundly beating ESPN and every other outlet. Often, instead of giving him credit, they pull the “ESPN has learned.” At ESPN, you rarely see “as first reported by CBS Sports” or something along those lines. Ditto with Goodman and college basketball coaching changes and transfers.
And Jack Curry at the YES Network has feuded with Buster Olney on twitter over scoops.
ESPN has had this problem for years – another outlet will break a story, but then ESPN will flood the zone (online, radio, TV) with the story, and quickly claim it as their own, rarely attributing the outlet that originally reported the story.
I’m sure the Ombudsman is on the case.

The moving truck should arrive at Mississippi State any day now. It’s a long drive from Boise after all.

Did TMZ credit Wayne Fontes Safari for breaking the story of Seau’s impending death?
May 4th, 2012 at 12:16 PM
Kate Upton
NSFW..probably duckworth’d but i dont care
May 4th, 2012 at 12:16 PM
whenever I listen, I don’t ever recall DP having many positive things to say about ESPN (the company), so I don’t really know if this is all that shocking is it?
May 4th, 2012 at 12:17 PM
Dan Patrick is forever complaining about ESPN. Just get over it already, man. How many years has it been since they let you go? You would think it was yesterday the way he always rants about “the mothership.” Even that phrase is tired and weak.
May 4th, 2012 at 12:17 PM
This is nothing new, though. ESPN had been doing this for years. It’s their MO.
May 4th, 2012 at 12:18 PM
THe thing is…PTI, Around the Horn, and Gottlieb Show all credited Dan Patrick Show. Cowherd took the kids question from the end of DP’s interview, started his off with that question, and gave no credit. Patrick was fucking steamed this morning.

Nope.

Down with ESPN. Support DP.
May 4th, 2012 at 12:19 PM
Theflack,
So people shouldnt complain when another show/company takes an idea and passes it off as their own? DP rails against ESPN because they deserve it

Go on…

It’s like Holly Sonders is talking to her right chesticle in the pic at the top of the page. It’s enchanting.
May 4th, 2012 at 12:21 PM
A.P.,
His constant complaining makes it hard to distinguish one issue from another. He just comes off looking like a bitter ex-employee, in my humble opinion.
May 4th, 2012 at 12:23 PM
DP left on good terms and had no hard feelings until ESPN management started dicking around and banning ESPN people to go on his radio show. That ban isn’t enforced on 99% of other sports radio shows. Its a vendetta by a couple douchebag suits in bristol who are bitter after the fact that DP’s show is kicking the shit out of Cowherd
May 4th, 2012 at 12:23 PM
Doubt he’s that bitter. Leaving ESPN was the best thing that ever happened to his career.

What do you want to do today, right chesticle? I don’t know, what do you want to do? …(hand in the air)
May 4th, 2012 at 12:26 PM
Vlad,
I totally agree with you. If he could just go one show without mentioning the Eastern Seaboard Programming Network he’d be much better off, and so would his listeners.
May 4th, 2012 at 12:27 PM
Is that true? I have no clue about ratings as far as radio goes. Do you have a link to that?

Did anyone credit The Jerk for creating those awesome glasses with the nose handle?
May 4th, 2012 at 12:29 PM
what you doin titty?
oh, you know…titty stuff.
May 4th, 2012 at 12:30 PM
People can gain alot of immediate hits by claiming a dispute with ESPN

Did anyone credit The Jerk for creating those awesome glasses with the nose handle?
They were going to … right up to the point when it made customers permanently cross-eyed … What a jerk.
May 4th, 2012 at 12:31 PM
Husker, ill have to look it up. I thought i saw it from Deitsch or another media guy on twitter. I could be wrong about the numbers but it is true that some espn suits are bitter than Dan is doing well on his own
May 4th, 2012 at 12:32 PM
it’s sleazy, but like all other aspects of the media these days, no one is really disputing the claims and it goes away once the next story comes out.
May 4th, 2012 at 12:32 PM
Oh hey, there’s darrell. We’ve been waiting for your input from last night’s knicks game

Golf is hard enough without big old fun bags getting in the way of your back swing and follow through. She really is skilled.

I’m waiting to find out what’s wrong with her. Like she hates Jews, or has smelly woman farts, refuses to give blowjobs, or despises fun…barring any of those things, she is fairly close to being a perfect woman.
May 4th, 2012 at 12:36 PM
Pretty much this. Just a fart in the wind.
May 4th, 2012 at 12:37 PM
It it seems to good to be true it probably is. But for now I’m giving her the benefit of the doubt. I mean and I hate women on the golf course and stuff.
May 4th, 2012 at 12:37 PM
holly sonders is the opposite of the holocaust.
May 4th, 2012 at 12:38 PM
She probably does anal by the 2nd date
May 4th, 2012 at 12:39 PM
Things were great until Carl Reiner had to go and fuck shit up.
May 4th, 2012 at 12:40 PM
i like how she tends the pin tho, i will say the rough was a little long.
May 4th, 2012 at 12:41 PM
She’s probably crazy and pulls the goalie just when she feels like she’s losing. That’s probably it, she’s nuttier than squirrel shit.
/Throwing shit against the wall that probably won’t stick
May 4th, 2012 at 12:42 PM
Maybe she putts from the rough…..
May 4th, 2012 at 12:42 PM
i laughed.

When Holly Sonder is making out with a guy and he asks her “Got any lube?”, she doesn’t even flinch.

May 4th, 2012 at 12:43 PM
If fuckin Watney wins this week, that will be the 4th time this year a golfer won the week before I have him. If it weren’t for Holly’s tits I’d be madder than I am right now.

Ah, pulling a Moynahan
May 4th, 2012 at 12:44 PM
holly sonders wasn’t one of the five hookers craig james killed.
May 4th, 2012 at 12:45 PM
I’m not sure I understand what ESPN as an entity did wrong here. There are two separate interviews, one conducted by Dan Patrick and one conducted by an ESPN employee. The interviewee answered the same question in the course of each interview and ESPN played a clip from the one they own. If Patrick is mad at Cowherd for stepping on his toes that makes sense but it’s not like the country was waiting with baited breath to see who would break the news of whether or not Kurt Warner’s kids would play football and ESPN is passing off this society-altering event as its own reportage
May 4th, 2012 at 12:49 PM
The Heat are better, Dan Patrick is too old to be playing the role of sports hipster, and he misses ESPN more than it misses him and that hurts.
May 4th, 2012 at 12:51 PM
Who, me? I’m just waiting for the Phil Mushnick post.
May 4th, 2012 at 12:51 PM
Here’s my question: Is this part of a bigger effort by ESPN as part of their policy? It seems to me that there is really no law on the books as far as sourcing. So if you’re trying to maximize profit, you’re not going to credit someone else unless you are legally required to, because it may draw attention to that competitor. If I’m not mistaken, SportsByBrooks kind of referenced this in regard to TMZ.
By the way, I’m not all saying that I agree with that – I think they needed to credit Dan Patrick and they certainly were first with it. Just that the mentality nowadays seems to reflect only what is required by law, instead of what is right.
May 4th, 2012 at 12:54 PM
shocked to find out that Cowherd has friends.
agree with Darrell. I think this may be the second occasion.
May 4th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
The idea of journalism being practiced by ESPN is laughable. They’ve done things like this for years. Patrick ought to know that better than anyone else.
May 4th, 2012 at 1:30 PM
Too bad Mrs. Eugene Tooms wasn’t, either. Maybe then TBL would quit giving that non-teenage attention whore the attention she so cravenly whores for.
May 4th, 2012 at 1:32 PM
Damn cocktease, holding out until the second date.
May 4th, 2012 at 1:39 PM
Patrick’s such a damn whiner. I’ve got money some of the ESPN brass do stuff like this just to screw with him.
May 4th, 2012 at 1:44 PM
Craig James thinks Holly Sanders is a little too thick.
May 4th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
Yeah no doubt…dayummmm!!
May 4th, 2012 at 4:06 PM
ESPN is not creditable as an accurate news source. Otherwise, they would fire Joe Schad for his totally bogus reports on who will be the next coach where.
