Tim Welke’s Blown Call in the Dodgers-Rockies Game Was Absurdly Awful
First base umpire Tim Welke’s version of “out” in yesterday’s Dodgers-Rockies game might very well be the worst blown call I have ever seen. Todd Helton has to be at least two feet off the bag. It’s so embarrassingly bad that it could easily slide into the Naked Gun baseball blooper reel, the one where players get hit by cars and attacked by tigers.
When MLB issues the inevitable apology today, the hope is they keep it short, sweet, and blunt. A simple Bill Walton “terrrrrrrrrrrrrrible” would more than suffice, as would an expanded version of instant replay.
Below are a couple of screengrabs from Larry Brown Sports. They greatly assist in driving home the absurdity:
And of course, the aforementioned blooper reel:

A sport gets posts in proportion to how many people care about it. Thats just business. I spend about 4 hours a day on nhl.com, you should check it out. it’s all hockey all the time.
May 3rd, 2012 at 1:30 PM
True story — when I saw NYC and DC, I was confused because I didn’t think the Wizards made the playoffs.
People who think hockey matters are adorable. Enjoying hockey is great and I’ll never begrudge people who do. But you have to understand why is fifth or sixth on the sports consciousness totem pole, even during the playoffs.

It’s pathetic that Welke got the call wrong. It’s even more pathetic that the umps behind the plate and at 3rd (who both would have had fantastic angles) didn’t overrule the call. Umpires are taught not to get in the way of one another instead of helping their “teammates” get it right.
May 3rd, 2012 at 1:55 PM

THe only valid argument over content of this site is when someone posts a feature and has no idea what the fuck they’re talking about, like they did zero research. I think most (not all) hockey fans kind of don’t care if the sport is not discussed or covered in every single medium.
I really couldn’t care less about the popularity of the sport relative to other sports in North America or what channel the game is on. Whatever channel the game is on, I’ll subscribe to that channel. There are sites out there that strictly cater to hockey fans. I recommend hitting those up.

Spence, since I missed the golf post … are you (or anyone else) going to the US Open?
Post whatever you like, God knows I don’t watch hockey, but using that string of posts as an excuse for the lack of a hockey post is funny. The no-hitter was pre-Roundup and the other two were immediately after. The hockey post must have gotten lost in two hot women posts, a birth, a car wreck, and mocking MLB (injuries and calls).

Have you guys ever tried contacting someone at MLB Advanced Media about this? I know Mr. Hot Mustard [copyright irishmafia 2006] likes to complain about it on Twitter a lot and even puts a mention @MLB but I bet if someone from a sports blog as widely read as this one, Deadspin, Big League Stew or Sports Illustrated contacted the folks at MLBAM, they’d find a way to monetize those embeddable videos for you.
MLB likes to make money. The NBA, NFL and even my beloved NHL are missing out on chances to make lots of money off their video content. I know Jason McIntyre likes to make money. He built this website to do that and it does a very good job. The staff here must understand what MLB is trying to do with their policy on media rights.

May 3rd, 2012 at 2:32 PM
This never rules.
May 3rd, 2012 at 2:35 PM
Check your Twitter, mantis. Got a fantasy question I’ll keep out of the comments regarding Chooch.
May 3rd, 2012 at 2:36 PM
Actually, they are allowing the Weaver to embed.
May 3rd, 2012 at 2:36 PM
This your statement or your hypothesis as to what MLB will tell me? Or am I just wasting my time in general, Jason?
May 3rd, 2012 at 2:37 PM
Makers has a mint julep flavored whiskey specifically for juleps that they only release for 3 weeks during the year. Week before Derby, Derby week and week after.
Hell yes. Thanks.

There are advantages of being owned by a Fortune 500 company.

Forty Creek.
Bulleit won’t break your bank and mixes well.
May 3rd, 2012 at 2:38 PM
Options, if you will.
May 3rd, 2012 at 2:40 PM
honestly, i prefer it when videos aren’t embedded…id rather open a new tab just for the video.
May 3rd, 2012 at 2:42 PM
I don’t care what anyone says. Sports are really neat and fun.

May 3rd, 2012 at 2:42 PM
This is especially true for gifs, which just slow down load times to a standstill.
May 3rd, 2012 at 2:43 PM
Bulleit won’t break your bank and mixes well.
Bulleit Rye is a game changer for cheap-ish brown liquor
May 3rd, 2012 at 2:43 PM
Joking aside, my point is that if TBL approaches MLB and says, “I’m EIC of thebiglead.com” vs saying, “I’m EIC of thebiglead.com of the USA Today Sports Media” he instantly has name recognition.
And if he can sell the embedding for not just his site, but all of USA Today, not only would MLB be more likely be to agree to such a large opportunity, but then he would have a monopoly on baseball videos that nobody else in the internet would have.
May 3rd, 2012 at 2:44 PM
Juleps are sweet by their nature, i’d go with a bourbon with a higher rye content, like Bulleit($) or Woodford($$) (Maker’s and other wheated bourbons are too sweet for my tastes). Woodford is the official bourbon of theKentucky Derby, too. They have special 1L bottles this time of year.
May 3rd, 2012 at 2:45 PM
Hold up. Isn’t USA Today and MLB Advance Media in some sort of partnership?
May 3rd, 2012 at 2:45 PM
I tried, St. Bear. Got a “no comment.” Even offered to do the leg work with no compensation necessary. Jason isn’t interested in promoting baseball for money.
May 3rd, 2012 at 2:46 PM
Well this post looks like a dumpster fire.
May 3rd, 2012 at 2:47 PM
In fact, USA Today and MLB Advanceed Media are partnering in something

Woah. Yup!

The plot thickens!

Oooo, are we talking about booze? We had two and a half handles of Famous Grouse left over from our wedding reception. A month and a half later and only part of one handle is left. Free booze goes quickly.
May 3rd, 2012 at 2:50 PM
Woodford Reserve
I tried Woodford for the first time two years ago. I find it to be too sugary.
May 3rd, 2012 at 2:51 PM
Quite true, Joe Posanski left for this venture. Interesting to see what happens. Perhaps there’s more here than we think hence TBL’s “No comment”.

You guys are way behind. Did you not see the Posnanski news we broke?

I didn’t say you weren’t allowed to like it. I don’t care for it though. Belleit is my bourbon of choice.

Sugary isn’t a word I’d use to describe Woodford. I’d go with balanced, though i think they do have a heavier char on the barrel which could lead to the sugary description. What bourbon do you usually drink?
May 3rd, 2012 at 2:55 PM
I keep this.
May 3rd, 2012 at 2:56 PM
You welcome
May 3rd, 2012 at 2:57 PM
So this means what we are talking about is even easier to accomplish since your foot is already in the door.
May 3rd, 2012 at 2:57 PM
I go with “perfection”
Vodka
May 3rd, 2012 at 3:00 PM
Oh, i got my barrel on order. Should be ready in 2015.

Bulleitt. Knob Creek. Basil Hayden. All personal favorites.

Isn’t hockey essentially soccer on ice with punching allowed? They are both terminal to watch.
May 3rd, 2012 at 3:04 PM
no comment
May 3rd, 2012 at 3:14 PM
No pigeon holing then. Bulliet and Buffalo Trace are my $20 bottles. Bulliet is in-your-face with the rye, which i like. Knob Creek is ok, but at that $$, i’m a Woodford fan. I was never able to get into Basil, too sweet and not strong enough (proof) for me. Different strokes and all… Have you tried Weller 107? That’s what I go for when I want a wheated whiskey.

Old Pogue is on my try soon list. Same distillery makes Willet, my new favorite (not the one in the pot still bottle).

May 3rd, 2012 at 3:35 PM
This is the funniest thing I have seen on TBL today.
May 3rd, 2012 at 3:36 PM
Two t’s in Willett, dammit.

No offense, but fuck mint juleps. A waste of good whiskey.

Now let’s shut this stread down, as we are wont to do with so many others.
