A sucker punch? In lacrosse? No! (The kid’s name is Jake Champion!)
When I was growing up, Lacrosse was one of those sports only played by kids at private schools. I don’t know if it’s because I live on the East Coast or what, but seems like it is much more popular and mainstream now.

Kinda reminds me of Seinfeld’s Two-Face, she can look really good sometimes, and then sometimes she looks like she’s been rode hard and put away wet.
Not one of those times.

How did all that guy’s teammates stand around while he lay on the ground and the player who cracked him sat on the bench? I’d have hit the first guy I saw in the blue jersey, then charged the bench.

I keep seeing this Obama girlfriend story everywhere. All the write-ups present this as shocking news, and take great pains to point out that the chick is white. Also, isn’t the woman an amalgam of different people he dated when he was young?

If so, I started doing those for peoples birthdays a long time ago. Serious fun if you really know the person – I would make the ingredients a reflection of their personality/life. It’s really cool to be at someone’s house and see a 6-pack of beer on their office bookcase that you gave them 10 years ago.

Ryan McDonough skated for 53 minutes last night. 67 shifts. Absolutely incredible. Gaborik was skating his 36th shift of the night when he scored the game winner. 95 shots. Only 3 went in. Over one full hour of game clock elapsed from the final regulation goal to the OT winner. There were 6 shots off the pipe, 3 in the 3rd overtime alone. And Doc Emrick was on his game last night. He and Torts were the only two guys showing no fatigue in the 3rd OT.
The goaltenders were magnificent. Shame one had to lose.

I always put upc symbols on mine with an encoded number on it – like their birth date. I put their age on the volume – ’40 fluid yrs’.
One guy worked in the corp office for Waffle House – I made his label look exactly like the Waffle House block-letter sign – and his last name has 6 letters and begins with ‘Wa’ so it caused a double take.

not like that at all really. I have no interest in either sport at all. I’ve tried to watch both, NBA last year, NHL this year. I find myself losing interest in an NBA playoff game after a couple minutes, yet I can watch a NHL playoff game for a couple periods and be glued to it.
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:02 AM
The best was when we brought him to get a picture done. (Backstory – my son generally is a spitting image of me). The photo looks like he’s looking over each shoulder of the cameraman simultaneously. The line he had after he read Romney’s statement was awesome. “Politics is creepy, and in no way like reality.”
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:12 AM
Off the pipe. Troy Brouwer’s miss in the third period was Waahington’s best chance. King Henrik was locked in last night. Boyle made a save too… For Holtby in the other end. Richards had it one but it hit Boyle right in the ass. Holtby made 3 saves in about 1.5 seconds at one point. Absolutely stoned Callahan right at the goal mouth and then stopped 2 rebounds. It was a goaltending clinic. There were points where the Caps had a shift of no less than 90 seconds in Rangers’ ice where they were just pelting Lundqvist. He made save after save.

@82, yes, let’s tax the shit outta the job creators. Nevermind the 48% that pay no federal income tax at all. The Buffett rule was a political gimmick that wouldn’t have made a dent in the deficit.
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:12 AM
Google “income gap.” Then you’ll understand why.
Also, the GOP wants to extend the Bush tax cuts without paying for them. Which totally jives with their 2010 rhetoric about how “Obama’s debt” is ruining America. It’s like they’re not even trying to hide it anymore.
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:13 AM
Think real hard about this before you completely relocate.
The core of what they’re talking about is taxing moneys that have essentially already been taxed. The bet is that it will trickle down to everyone. We don’t really want this now, do we?
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:15 AM

May 3rd, 2012 at 9:15 AM
Munch created four versions of “Scream,” and the other three are in museums; the one sold belonged to Petter Olsen, a Norwegian real-estate developer whose father was a neighbor of Munch’s; the family kept the work in their living room, and during World War II, concealed it in a hay barn to protect it from the Nazis.

May 3rd, 2012 at 9:17 AM
At least Dale Hunter removed his head from being able to see his prostate. Finally gave Ovechkin the ice time he deserves. Dude was playing everywhere. In front of the net, at the point on the PP, but you could tell in the OTs that he didn’t have anything in the tank along the boards. Just getting worked for the puck, even throwing lazy ring around passes.
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:17 AM
Off the pipe. Troy Brouwer’s miss in the third period was Waahington’s best chance
Yeah — super exciting game. I wish I could haev stayed up to watch the whole thing. I like the home cooking in Washington when the spotlight went on Ovie even though the ref clearly was waving no goal.
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:17 AM
I know that’s the rhetoric, and I stood behind it for a long time. But I don’t see the proof. I’m fine with picking and choosing which wealthy to tax to death (“job creators” vs. Goldman Sachs, et al), but nobody will come to agreement on that issue. The politicians will insulate themselves and their buddies from any taxation, anyway… and they’ll guarantee that even if additional tax revenue were generated, it would be spent wastefully or basically granted back to the wealthy taxpayers in one form or another (a rebate, if you will).
Yeah, I’m jaded. I’m ready to watch DC burn and start over.
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:18 AM
I love this talking point. One of my favorites, actually.
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:18 AM
Full disclosure: I’m the guy in the neighborhood that always tells everyone to vote no on the “temporary” sales taxes. Why?
1. Our state already has an income tax.
2. They’re never temporary.
3. Please clean up your budget before you ask for more money.
When I read about the CDC sponsoring drag queen contests and “design a shirt out of condoms” contests, my response is … huh?
I’m not anti-tax at all. I’m “Clean up your house, before you ask for more”.

I think I’m finally moving over to the “tax the shit outta the wealthy” side of the fence. I can’t really explain why, either. It just feels like the right thing to do.
i tend to agree with you on taxing the hell out of the rich, but then i look at how much they currently pay in taxes in respect to the total tax revenue, and i step back on that stance. i want to say raise everyone’s taxes, but i am sure there is a flaw in that somewhere.
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:18 AM
“the core of what we’re talking about is taxing money’s that have already been taxed.”
Thank you. No one ever mentions that. If you work hard to build up investments in a taxable acct, you shouldn’t be penalized for that.

every time i think, even for a second, we shouldn’t tax the rich I remember that for the past 5 years i’ve been grateful to even have a job, let alone bitch and complain about having a stagnant salary and taxes taken out of my paycheck. and that’s with my income allowing me to have maybe a couple hundred bucks left over every two weeks for savings or spending. fuck it, tax ‘em, they can afford it.

Flat tax. Simplify the tax code ad everyone is paying the same rate.
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:20 AM
phenomenal.
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:20 AM
Ehhhhh, kinda. The easiest – and fairest – solution would be to up cap gains to 35 percent, cut the litany of loopholes present in the corporate tax code, and crack down hard on companies who hide their profits overseas to avoid taxation.
I wasn’t all “eat the rich” for a while either. It would be one thing if that success trickled down or was a result of actual job creation. But the amount of economic gain that demo has enjoyed over the past decade – largely at the expense of the middle and lower classes – is just too large to ignore.
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:22 AM

Regressive tax that screws the poor even more? Sounds like a PurdueMatt joint if I’ve ever heard one.
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:23 AM
Tax rates aren’t the issue but rather the loopholes that determine what taxable income is…a lot easier for “job creators” to write off more shit than the guy just earning a salary
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:23 AM
Amen to #100. The school district I live in wanted to “temporarily” raise property taxes to fill in budget shortfalls. Anyone voting no was branded as anti-education or wanting to hurt the kids. Nevermind the bloated compensation for admin types.

that is easy, but should they really be taxed more than they already are because their financial situation is better than yours?
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:24 AM
That bit was all kinds of awesome, but the mock ad was perhaps the funniest thing I’ve seen on The Daily Show in a long time.
“Revenge is a dish best served barbecued.”
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:24 AM
that’s so unfair it’s not even funny. 10% to a $10k income home is much more significant in terms of real life impact on the family than 10% to a $100k family. absurd you could even suggest this and hope to be taken seriously.
you should be taxed on the gain. you didnt do shit to earn that gain either other than take an educated risk.
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:24 AM
Was that the one after McDonagh got blown up?
He had Henrik dead to rights on that. He’s gotta bury that one.
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:25 AM
Sorry…I was trying to picture Whore Island.
That just punishes the poor. When all the wealthy people in America push hard for a flat tax, you can bet it ain’t fair for the rest of us.
In general, I’m on board with “everyone’s taxes need to go up.” Along with that, we need to trim the state and federal budgets like crazy. I’d be all for a temporary (3-5, signed into law by Congress) across-the-board, no exceptions tax increase to take a huge chunk out of the deficit. But the wealthy get the highest rate.
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:25 AM

Americans can vote in an entirely new Congress every two years but just choose not to, this is on us
While true, I feel like the system is arranged to perpetuate the “type” of person in office. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. DC is going to need an ethnic cleansing before things really change. I don’t know if we can “breed” it out of DC considering the small range of options we are provided for voting.
Perceived free will, etc.
I know, I picked an odd time to opine on the financial situation here in the US.
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:27 AM
The rich creating jobs is definitely a fallacy to which I do not subscribe.
I have a fundamental problem with re-taxing while the state and federal budgets are a complete mess. They cannot justify spending millions of dollars to broadcast Sesame Street in fucking Pakistan.
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:27 AM
But the amount of economic gain that demo has enjoyed over the past decade – largely at the expense of the middle and lower classes – is just too large to ignore.
please explain how that demo’s rise in income is at the expense of middle and lower classes. so the rich segment decided to work 15 waiter jobs at once, killing those jobs and hoarding tips on the way to the maserati dealer?
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:28 AM
This is what always gets me. They talk about 3% like it would literally mean having to dump Spago for Applebees.
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:28 AM
I love people that hold this opinion. Makes me wish that their jobs were subjected to state or federal budgets, and thus, and the mercy of angry, uneducated mobs only worried about themselves.
Your point that temporary measures often take on a feeling of permanence is valid (see tax cuts, Bush). But what do you expect people to do when their livelihoods are at stake?
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:29 AM
TAX TALK? FUCK YES!
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:30 AM
you should be taxed on the gain. you didnt do shit to earn that gain either other than take an educated risk.
then what is the point of buying stocks, etc?

May 3rd, 2012 at 9:31 AM
The rich weathered a recession they largely created by shedding jobs, cutting salaries, slashing benefits, and making people feel “lucky” to have a job as they worked 60 hours a week.
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:31 AM
Well, we all know what we should do. We should raise the SS retirement number to at least 68 (grandfather those who are a certain age, perhaps 55). We then need to get out of both Iraq and Afghanistan. We also need to legalize weed (or at the very least decriminalize it so we can spend our police money actually preventing crime). We need to tell those who want to keep the Bush tax cuts to shove it and go back to where they were under Clinton. All of those things would do wonders to our bottom line, yet all of those things won’t change save for maybe the Iraq/Afghanistan issue.
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:32 AM
the richest can afford an extra 3% tax. that’s not an attack on their wealth, their job creating abilities, their livelihoods. preposterous.
there is zero doubt they can afford it, and they probably should get a small increase in the tax rate. but, at what point do we stop ignoring the large chunk of people that really dont pay any taxes in the lower to middle class?
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:32 AM
Everyone, take a step back. Purdue Matt has sucked you into his ultra conservative republican vortex. Save yourselves the frustration!
Here, look at this poor, sweet puppy.
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:33 AM
Well, surreal Wednesday has turned into political Thursday.
Too much time spent on who and what to tax. Let’s cut spending please. Bloated defense contracts, especially for government workers turned independent contractors. They are fleecing the government and in turn you by pretending to keep us safe.

May 3rd, 2012 at 9:33 AM
To make money?
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:34 AM
All this assumes the underlying money was taxed. It’s more accurate to say it was subject to taxation, either on the business side or personal side. However, the underlying money may not have been taxed.
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:34 AM
When they have money to pay, have at it. But saying we can fix our issues by taxing the family of 4 making $70k seems…misguided.
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:34 AM
TAX TALK? FUCK YES! Mole
This shit wouldn’t be happening if Clay was around. He would have baited someone into a phony argument and distracted the conversation from fucking taxes.
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:34 AM
The rich weathered a recession they largely created by shedding jobs, cutting salaries, slashing benefits, and making people feel “lucky” to have a job as they worked 60 hours a week.
i guess you are looking at the super rich (?), because alot of the “rich” people in this country have no ability to cut jobs, salaries and benefits. that ability is for a select few CEO’s.

are you kidding me? if you start with $100 and gain $10 over the course ofd the year, you should be taxed on that $10. you’re still making more money than you had before.

Agreed — though, I’m torn. I think people should keep what is theres, but I also think the US needs to get out of the hole we are in. I think if a politicans ran on higher taxes but somehow campaigned on it being better for America as a whole some people MAY get behind it.
With that being said, who is seeing Avengers this weekened? The Hulk is my favorite superhero.

I knew the craziness from yesterday in the comments would spill over into today. We tried to remain calm and talk about lacrosse and its universal skills but it was no use.
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:42 AM
no it definitely does…im arguing that gain needs to be taxed at a higher rate than it currently is. that’s the benefit the rich get over the non-invested.

I think this is incorrect thinking. There are some government agencies that are underfunded. Right now we are just spending heaps of money in the wrong places. We need to correct that, but hard to when politicians are worried about re-election and have lobbyists so far up their ass you can only see their shoes.

that’s not discouraging investment…even at an increased cap gains rate, investors would still see substantial gains on their initial investment. but why should we be so concerned with protecting those that seek 20% annual gains on their portfolios at all costs? i mean, shit dude…at what point does wealth enter cross that line in terms of sustaining a standard of living?
im sorry, i think it’s asinine to suggest that taxing GAINS, not entire portfolios, at a higher rate discourages investment. it’s curbing unnecessary wealth and making sure those that acquire said wealth pay back the system that allowed them to procure it in the first place.
