Mariano Rivera Carted Off Field With Knee Injury During Batting Practice [UPDATE]
Mariano Rivera suffered an apparent right knee injury during Yankees batting practice today. He was removed from the field on a cart. He was shagging fly balls in center field.
A huge blow, obviously. We’ll update as more information comes available.
Update — Here’s a description of the injury from USA Today:
Rivera was going back on a fly ball during batting practice, making a leaping attempt at it before his right knee buckled on the Kauffman Stadium warning track. He was helped to his feet by manager Joe Girardi, who sprinted to the outfield, and bullpen coach Mike Harkey. Rivera, 42, was taken by cart off the field.
UPDATE II — The YES Network has the unembeddable video. Wow. Looks terrible.

I was at a late September game (2000?) Tribe vs. Twins. We’d gotten some seats very close to the right field fence. Lew Ford (RF Twins) went back to field some gapper.
He shredded his knee when he planted, I believe his spike caught in that area between the warning track and outfield grass. You could hear the pop. Sadly, whomever only got a triple as I think Torii Hunter came over while Ford was down writhing in pain. Game was delayed forever as they Lew Ford was out there like he got shot on Normandy Beach.

Twins will gladly trade the Yankees Matt Capps and finally get even for the Yanks trading Ron Davis to them back in the 1980′s.

That knee was done before he hit the wall. That’s why he hit the wall. Then he was rubbing the top of the knee. That a meniscus tear?

Than you are much more of a bad ass than I will ever be and you deserve all the respect I give to all servicemen and women. Both my parents served in a revolutionary war and I have many family members who died making my country Eritrea free. I got nothing but respect for soldiers.
I just didn’t see the need for such a snarky comment when I was just trying to say something nice about a guy who I respect a lot and whose career might have just ended.

You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for five years because they didn’t wear a veil. You know, guys like that ain’t got no manhood left anyway. So it’s a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them. Actually it’s quite fun to fight them, you know. It’s a hell of a hoot. It’s fun to shoot some people. I’ll be right up there with you. I like brawling.
Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet.
I come in peace. I didn’t bring artillery. But I’m pleading with you, with tears in my eyes: If you fuck with me, I’ll kill you all.

Texans what’s your feeling on the Marine sergeant who was given an “other than honorable” discharge because he repeatedly posted Facebook messages saying he would refuse certain orders from the President if he thought they were unconstitutional?
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:38 PM
A lot of people act like George W. Bush was never the president to answer the unconstitutional part. Obama is the Commander In Chief and you do not openly talk down to him, regardless of political affiliation. You just don’t say any of that in an open forum and he paid the price for it. I can’t blame the military for discharging him, but I do believe it wouldn’t have happened with a president other than Obama.
May 3rd, 2012 at 9:42 PM
I have a friend who, though he himself didn’t serve, was in the Uniform Division of the Secret Service for two years and so became friends with a lot of guys who did serve, and he and I came to a similar conclusion. This is probably blown up more about, even with the foreign policy achievements he has had by using the military, Obama seems still to be at odds; he’s a liberal, Harvard lawyer. There’s not many of those in uniform. But I completely agree; soldiers who voluntarily enlist give up the ability to choose what they do and do not listen to. We have a military that is answerable to civilian leadership and it’s an important cornerstone of a stable republic.

Well she and my father-in-law are probably about to split. They were keeping it together for appearances sake up to the wedding, but now that that is past things are breaking down. Which is fine, my wife and I both know that they would be happier apart. But anyway, that’s most of the reason she’s staying a full four days.
May 3rd, 2012 at 10:40 PM
But is she thick?
May 3rd, 2012 at 10:41 PM
in-laws are good for free babysitting, so it’s a double-edged sword for sure. it’s nice not having them nearby, for easy visits, lots of holiday obligation, but sucks that you always have to hire people to watch your kids

one of those things you swear you;d never do when you’re single is stay together ‘just for the kids’, but when you have kids, you can see why folks do. divorce is hard on everyone, and custody splitting a big hassle.

Pepper spray. That stuff is completely debilitating. And it lasts forever. My brother is currently training to be a police officer in the Houston area. A couple of months ago, they had to be sprayed in the face so that they could see how it feels. After you flush your eyes, the instructors told him not to sit on the ground because if even the tainted water drops from your face onto your crotch, it’ll burn like hell.

They’ve had issues with each other for years. It doesn’t help that their son, my wife’s brother, committed suicide about a year a half ago. Now that their only daughter is married and we have an established life here in Dallas, I think they are finally realizing that it’s time to go do different things. It’s actually sadder that they are still together because they are both miserable. My wife has been trying to get them to consider divorce for years.
